I used to be ranked Silver and then Gold. But I hadn’t played comp in a while, so I thought I would play again. After losing all of my placements on DPS I ranked Bronze. I went from losing a game to Gold and Silver players to then playing with and against Bronzes and downhill from there. The matchmaking was unfair, or at least it felt like it was, our team didnt play together and sometimes didnt even make it to the point, resulting in an instant loss. It felt like the enemy always played better and actually together. The teammates are genuinly so bad, I’m stuck here because no one does what they’re supposed to do. There’s rarely any teamplay. And almost never anyone in comms, i stopped trying to talk to people in comms, because most of the time theres no one to answer or listen at all. Makes me feel like you just can’t play in this rank without playing with friends and working together. It’s just not fun anymore to play comp like this, I used to be in Gold before I stopped playing for a while, and it used to be fun and it wasn’t as bad as it is here in Bronze. I don’t know what I can do you climb out, I feel like I can’t carry or anything, and I can’t play together with them to achieve winning either. If anyone has any tips or help, it would be appreciated a lot.
Post a replay and allow some of the more experienced players to provide you with feedback.
The diminished Overwatch player base has left only the more, skilled, players standing which means, to climb, you’ll need to improve your gameplay and skill if you want to rank up.
Wouldn’t a diminished player base mean that skilled players have actually left (because who cares about being good at a dead esport?) which should mean it would be easier to climb?
That’s a fair point actually. The only people left are the has-beens and never-weres all of whom desperately clutching an expired product.
But for the players who remain, they genuinely can’t give up the game. And they have just enough of the required elements to be dangerous on the ladder.
Which still results in a player, who never really understood the game/nor took the time to grind, improve and climb, in a skill/knowledge/experience deficit.
I have no doubt that the old advice of dequeue and sit out for a bit on a loss is never more true than now. I am more than convinced the matchmaker has some weird “optimizations” going on that try to “test” you hard to force you down a bit. I had some horrendous placements with unreasonable SR losses just after this weekend/Monday, going to run another account soon, bet it’s different too.
As long as we remember that includes you right?
I was thinking of doing that too
Have you tried playing torbjorn, bastion, soldier, symmetra, or pharah?
You mean mention a bot ?
Sure I could give you my advice.
Not sure you read posters though ;).
Uuuuuhhhh im gonna guess that has something to do with turrets
Why not, did hear anything about blizzard ("strength of the wind, not the amount of snow. To be a blizzard, a snow storm must have sustained winds or frequent gusts that are greater than or equal to 56 km/h ")
You got an answer mate ?
One day, I’ll try to teach NLP.
Not for tommorow, though.
“from europe with love”.
The amount of snow does matter, for if there 0 amount of snow it would effectively just be cold wind.
Neuro Linguistic Programing is too much, just read 48 laws of power by Robert Greene. Basic ideas, historical examples, also less creepy and more entertaining/interesting.
Sry mate, not sure US/EU geeks will read “Neuro Lingustic Pro-bullcrap”.
I meant NLP as it means : Nat-lang-prog.
Sure thing no geek will use it wisely.
Let’s hope we’ll have enough IT resources to work properly.
Never heard if nat lang pro. Then again my background in programing is in Java, never really looked at much else all that much (was looking to focus on 1 language at a time).
Focus on 1 language is a good idea for a dev. GJ .
I guess spring and hibernate are a peace of cake for you (sry, not aware of latest java libs).
About “nat lang pro”, I made a mistake (copy/paste issue).
I meant “neural network programing”.
I was using Java for Android Phone Game development, spring and hibernate to not ring a bell, but maybe it was more of a PC thing I was using the Android SDK in the lips they were provided to that mostly. I have heard of openGL lol…
Feeling stuck? Want to climb?
Go back to the drawing board.
The toughest reasons that players get stuck and don’t get better, mostly has to do with their knowledge and applying the knowledge to their games. This is what mostly separates people in different ranks. People at high ranks know more and they apply what they know to their game play.
Applying is the harder of those two things.
(yes mechanics are involved too, but game sense is more important at lower ranks imo)
There’s two main things to consider and then climbing out of lower ranks shouldn’t be too hard.
The first is admitting that if you want to climb, it really comes down to you needing to improve your skills. The issue isn’t that you are a grandmaster that just can’t carry and climb out of bronze.
There are a lot of players who want to be higher ranked, but refuse to go learn more or to practice. They demand to be a higher rank, but do not attempt to change their play or to increase their own skill. Its similar to a scenario of someone who has barely played basketball, but wants to go play on a college level or the NBA, but refuses to practice on their dribbling, their shot, their defense, team play, etc.
You just wont get better if you don’t practice the needed skills.
The second trick is good practice habits to take something you have learned and then actually apply it in your games.
If you are someone who watches youtube videos and guides, then the next biggest problem is understanding that just by watching a video and saying “that make sense” isn’t going to change your game play. It isn’t practicing if you watch a video, go get into a game and then forget about all that stuff immediate and fall into your old habits.
Don’t watch a video that says “here are 10 things that Bronze players need to focus on” and then try to apply all 10 things in your games, thinking that you will be able to just do all of these things (and that you will manage to do them well).
This is the key and you will climb quickly by applying this method: Take 1 of those things that you know you need to work on and go play 50 games in QP where that is your only concern. Doesn’t matter if you win or lose or screw other stuff up, this is strictly time spent for you to not only learn the skill, create a good habit, but learn by trial and error where you can and can’t apply the skill.
(This is you practicing just dribbling skills, so you don’t get the basketball stolen from you the second you step on the court)
It could be less than 50 games or more than 50 games to create the habit. but practice until you feel comfortable enough that you can continue performing this new skill while learning a new skill.
(you feel comfortable with dribbling the ball and stopping people from stealing it from you, great, now you can practice looking around the court while dribbling, to asses and see if there are any open team mates to pass to or to drive to the hoop or take the shot)
And you most likely will learn the nuances that come with the skill that you are practicing. Usually by learning one thing, you will inadvertently learn a few other things that are relative to it and can hold powerful information that may help dictate your actions and make good decisions elsewhere. “Ive learned to keep track of the kill feed. There are only 2 people on my team alive… better not use and waste my ult by using it now.”
or “Hey, we are winning this fight 5v2. I may be able to leave the fight, go push up a little bit to go cut off and kill the enemy Mercy who we killed about 20 seconds ago and she should be heading back by herself soon.”.
So you learned one skill, to read the kill feed, but it came along with learning how you could use that information for other things).
Now you wont be an expert just because you started a habit, but you are on the right path and can refine as you continue playing and start learning the next thing to practice for 50 games (while still maintaining the first skill that you have put into habit).
It’s a bummer when your team doesn’t play together and you will definitely have games where it will just be a loss even if you are playing at your best, but if you are actually getting better, you will climb.
Some great options to look over and choose as your first couple skills to improve:
-
Not dying as much (when I first started working on this, my deaths dropped from easily above 10 a game, down to 5 or less. Some games I do get a above 5, but average is 4. Doesn’t matter what role Im playing. This not only helps with obviously staying alive while still trying to get value, but it comes with the nuance of realizing when you should take a fight or give the enemy space, waiting to group up, taking specific match ups or not, etc. If your main goal is to stay alive while still getting value (and staying alive is extremely important) then you will start to find the scenarios where you died and didn’t have to. Like maybe it wasn’t a great idea to try and kill the enemy hog when he was full health with all of his cool downs and you are playing Mccree with half your health, no cool downs and in front of your tanks within Hogs hooking range).
-
Using natural cover at all time (can you get through a whole game of not getting picked by the Widow, even when your tanks aren’t running shields? Just another way of making sure that you die less. You don’t need to stand out in the middle of a choke, staring down 6 enemies. Learn to use cover, peak corners, wiggle peak, poke until its safe for you to proceed).
-
High Ground is OP (a lot of lower ranks do not abuse high ground. Instead of rushing into the fight because you feel like you HAVE to be there, take a moment to get to high ground if possible. Sometimes you don’t have this option and need to stay in the fight, but practicing getting on high ground as often as you can will start to give you an idea of when you can go to high ground and when you need to stay in the fight on low ground. Any time you aren’t fighting (waiting for the enemy team to come to the fight) go prepare for the fight by taking high ground). The hardest part, STAY ON HIGH GROUND unless there is a really good reason not to… like the enemy has taken time/resources to get to you and will kill you unless you leave. Players in low ranks either never get on high ground or often drop down immediately when the fight starts. STAY ON HIGH GROUND.
-
Ult Management (It’s easy to throw out ults when you think you see a good opportunity, but if you are only judging it off the enemy placement alone, then it could easily fail. Need to assess how many people are alive on both teams. If your whole team is dead and you want to go for that 6k death blossom, don’t. Wait to use your ult when it has a better chance of success. This includes possible threats that can stop your ult. A simple cool down can stop a lot of ults, so need to make sure you are not blowing your ult. Can you ult be used to prevent a powerful enemy ult? Might want to use it for that instead of simply going for a bunch of kills… it depends on the scenario of cours).
-
Cool Down Management (Its a little surprising how little lower rank players think about their own cool downs and how powerful they make the heroes. In most cases, if the match up is even as far as characters go, the one who has cool downs to use, will most likely win the match up (they definitely have the advantage).
Are you running into a team fight without your cool downs? Why? Take cover, poke and wait for your cool downs. Cool downs come back up, then move in and attack.
There are some match ups where you don’t need your cool downs, but for the most part, give yourself every opportunity to win by only taking fights that you can win and having your cool downs. Even better, you should go in when you have cool downs and the person you want to kill, doesn’t have their cool down or other possible threats that could stop you, don’t have cool downs.) -
Peal (for god’s sake, help your team mates. It will in turn help you and your team win fights. If you are someone who dives the enemy and gets 3 kills, but then look back and see your whole team is dead, thinking “well they should be able to take care of themselves, I got 3 picks” won’t help you win the game. Just because you THINK you are doing your job, doesn’t mean you actually are. Your job isn’t just to get picks. It is to play as a team and sometimes your team needs help. You might have games where you don’t have to peal as much and you are just rolling the enemy, but if you are in a game where your team is having a hard time winning fights while you are off getting picks, then it’s time to read the room and realize that you probably can add more value by helping your team mates stay alive and will most likely get picks while doing so. It doesn’t have to be just supports. If you see your Rein is low, go help him out. Saying “I got 3 picks, what are you guys doing?!?!!?” isn’t going to change that you are losing the game. Recognize this and be the change that is needed. Its what a good player would do.)
Yup, totally feel you on bronze being rubbish to play in.
Funnily enough it’s my tank is bronze. My dps rank is still mid gold, although I hardly play. Played one dps match last season, after 22 minutes wait… Won it with 48-12 kd. Bit too many deaths, but solid kills.
The game was faster paced than my bronze tank games, but felt easier as my team mates were reliable.
Looking at your stats your kills per minute is very low.
Your solo kills per minute is miniscule.
I suspect mechanical issues. I’d advise playing a bunch of ffa death match and get good at wining duels.
A couple of years back I climbed 800 SR on Lucio after playing a few hours in ffa.
If you’re in bronze the way to climb out is to farm enemies. You’re on dps. Should be far easier than someone trying to climb on support (Or even, God forbid, Mercy).
To keep it simple, avoid dying.
BUT dont look for vod reviews, instead look for workshop codes. To really learn, is repetition, a nice workshop will teach muscle memory and eventually great reactive skills.
Aim lab + work shop codes.
Ok ok, Seek vod reviews but look for something that has deeper meaning. Deciphering a Vod review is another skill that I cannot post about it here.
