The point is. A game doesn’t just die unless the devs just completely quit doing anything with it… Hence titles like CoD or even what Ubisoft is notorious for (R6:Siege, For Honor, The Division).
Overwatch hasn’t been in that same place, it’s constantly doing something and it isn’t saying, “Hero ## is released, now give us $##.## to play as them.” because they know that is certainly how you tank the game.
The game isn’t dying. A viewing service isn’t a determining place to say a game is dying. Weird example, but Clash Royale (edit: or would Monster Hunter be a better one? It never really had a scene or presence on Twitch) isn’t really a Twitch thing, but that game weirdly enough isn’t dying. So why is Twitch views the deciding factor of a game being alive or not?
Because Blizzard was trying to make this game a Twitch thing. Also I never said that Twitch views were the deciding factor, I said that it’s the best metric we have.

Since when the game population is determined by the number of streamers?
if the game is dying it is cuz the ppl don’t have fun with playing it and not cuz the streamers are leaving.

And a lot of the streamers are leaving because they are unhappy with the state of the game. If these people, who get a lot of money from them playing Overwatch, quit? Something must be going on.
Pretty sure Bilzz was trying to use the same formula as Heroes of the Storm does in engaging people in a new game genera that could just last.
Create a game genre with a unique list of characters that can be accommodating for anyone to start, and challenging enough to continue to climb.
Why do you think Super Smash Bros is so popular? It’s used that exact principle.
Yes. it is called bandwagonning but that doesn’t mean Fortnite is a better game just cuz is a more of streaming material.
Because streamers also follow the money.
Their living is having viewers pay them money to watch them play video games. If something is both boring and not paying out as much as something else could… What do you think is going to happen?

I mean… yeah, that’s the thing, they stream for money. They don’t even necessarily stream because a game is fun-- a lot of those people do what they do like a job, which means that they will simply move onto whatever is the most popular thing at the time, for the viewercount, regardless of whether they want to play it or not.
LPers on Youtube who are notorious for disliking a certain genre of game will still play games on that genre on their channel as long as it’s “the new hotness”, because money makes you care an awful lot less about whether you’re having fun or not.
( As an aside, there are also people who didn’t even like Overwatch at launch but who played it until they became popular and then dropped the game once they had built up some popularity for themselves. )

People judge game’s popularity with twitch views? A lot of old classic and still popular games would be perceived dead if we all did that.
Just because a game has servers that are up and players doesn’t mean its not in decline and dying. The death of a game takes a LONG time and dwindles…
The above process for Overwatch has definitely begun.
The life cycle of a game is as follows…
Growth
Stabilization/Retention
Decline
Dead
For the first two stages to last a long time, almost EVERYTHING has to go perfectly. Any hiccup or even another game release can cause stage 3 to come too soon.
If you think overwatch is in either a growing phase or stable phase, you’re out of your mind.
Just as likely their viewers either stopped playing already or didn’t play at all. Thing is, a lot of the people who watch these games don’t, or will ever, play them.
Ya that is a fair assessment. I think it can be widely agreed that 1000 SR is way too much of a pool of skill to pull from.
Do people who watch people play on Twitch also play the game? Or do they watch whatever the person is playing and never play the game?
You really need to stop saying that. It’s just a metric that has very little to do with the actual health/balance/longevity of the game.

It shows interest in the game. It’s the best metric we have as we have no other metrics other than marketing fluff from Blizzard. I know it doesn’t show people who are actually playing the game.

A game does well by catering to the people who PLAY it, not to the people who watch others play it.

then constantly saying "but on twitch… " means NOTHING if you are arguing for balance changes or new features or character builds which SO many of these threads try so hard to link to twitch viewership.
If you understand that, stop quoting twitch viewership and streamer is leaving as reasons things should change.
