Toxicity & Sexism in VC

I don’t often talk in VC- usually just because my computer is in the living room, and I don’t want to be making excess noise. I do my best to communicate via text throughout my games.

However, today I was in a match (playing moira), where my co-support was attempting to “lead” the team in VC. He began calling me out a lot, but sort of aggressively and at weird times. Like yelling “MOIRA PLAY PASSIVELY” while I was standing behind our Rein’s shield and healing the team. By the end of the match, these call-outs had apparently convinced several other teammates that I was the weak link and not healing anyone, so a couple other people started getting mad at me in VC saying things like “moira you need to heal”, etc. This was frustrating for me, because we were 14 mins into the game and I had 21k heals; I was focusing heals as much as I could and not flanking or playing dps or anything like that.

So I turned on my mic to tell them “I AM healing, I have 21k heals right now in 14 minutes”. I got cut off by the other support, who proceeded to say “Moira go into the kitchen and make me a sandwich” (I’m a woman). Any time I tried to speak up after that, he would just start talking over me and tell me to make him a sandwich.

Just overall a really awful VC experience that doesn’t exactly encourage me to use my mic in the future. I’d also like to point out that just because someone is loud in VC doesn’t necessarily mean they’re doing a good job or know what they’re talking about, so don’t automatically start blaming someone else just because loudmouth in VC said they’re the problem. If loudmouth in VC is dead 50% of the match and yelling out commands while spectating, maybe he’s the issue.

The people treating you poorly are indeed the issue. I hope that you reported them, and I hope that you have a few positive games, or enjoy playing something else, as a palate cleanser.

Block and move on. You spoke up long after everyone decided it was your fault instead of being proactive and engaged. At that point it’s too late, and you let yourself get trolled by a 12-year old “leader” on top of that. If you’re going to be silent in VC, stay silent in VC.

Probably the loudmouth is the issue (wtf does “play passively” even mean), but half of life is showing up, and when it came to voice comms, you didn’t.

I mean I do have plenty of good games with good teammates; maybe that’s why this one got under my skin so much.

Well nobody else really spoke up until the end of the match either, and at that point I did use VC. I didn’t speak up sooner because it was just the one guy (and he was like nonstop talking/commanding all game although he did pick on me several times) and I didn’t really care. Like it was annoying to be called out for dumb things, but whatever. At the end when people started actually blaming me and saying I wasn’t healing- that’s when I spoke up, because I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that I had put out plenty of heals. Of course at that point, I don’t know if anyone could even hear me over this guy telling me to go make him sandwiches.

The best thing you can do is mute, report, move on.

Just like with any other channel, the modus operandi is the same:

  • Ignore the “clever guys” who believe they are better than the rank they are stuck in.
  • Mute and Block (or avoid too) the harasser to prevent further stupid stuff on your ears.
  • Report the dude insulting/harassing with the proper tool.

Getting triggered and responding/engaging back only encourages trolls. You would be surprised how much not giving attention destroys their tactics. I usually just say something like : “Let me guess, you are a T500 smurf right? … ok dude. Muted and blocked, good luck!

It sucks that you had this experience and it sucks even more that this is such a common problem. Obviously you don’t need to hear “report and avoid” any more, but I would suggest trying to find a duo (or more if you can find enough people) to play with. Speaking from experience, having just one other person there who you know has your back makes a world of difference with this kind of thing. Honestly, playing ranked solo is such a miserable experience that it’s probably worth just muting text and voice chat if you can’t find someone to play with.

Hope you have some better games going forward!

Unfortunately you don’t really have much seay in saying anything. Only your allies.

Best you have is report and muting.

Hopefully a good medal at the end

It’s not just you, it seems as if toxicity towards women increases the moment season is starting to end. The amount of times I have heard “go back to the kitchen and make me a sandwich” the past two weeks is insane. Like, can we not come up with something more original? I really dont want to make you a sandwich with that attitude lmao.

Note that I’m not queueing alone and both of my friends were like ???.

we don’t have to accept anything. that’s stupid af.

I was so shocked at the time that I couldn’t think of a comeback, but next time we should definitely tell them that if they have 2 hands to play overwatch, they can go make their own sandwiches.

And yeah, I get that there’s nothing much the forum community can do, hence all the “block and report” comments…But I needed to vent and I feel like even though reporting is good, it’s still good to make this stuff known. If it happens in game and just gets reported, then only a few people know it happened, and maybe the person gets banned, maybe not. Atleast by talking about it here, we can show that this is an issue and hopefully blizzard will take it seriously, or forumers will help stop this behavior when it happens in-game. Just not really into the whole idea of being shushed in game, and coming here and having more people say “shush its fine move on”.

mute idiots
report them so there accounts get perma banned eventually

rinse, repeat, profit

that’s the only way to deal with this sort of thing

Its because this happens all day every day in every game for the last 30 years. Your case isn’t special.

I think people should be in VC at all times.

On the other hand its also on people to call out bad behavior and support people receiving abuse.

I’m sorry you had to deal with that. There are decent people in VC and I hope that it doesn’t discourage you from using it in the future.

I honestly think its required for OW. I know that is an opinion that many disagree with, even better players, but thats where I’ve landed on the question of VC.

I feel like the whole “just report and block” comments are a little … ‘dumb’. It’s not like that didn’t occur to us that we can just report and block. It’s happening more often than it should and we should be able to let people know that this is still happening.

So, I feel like you did well ranting here. I hope they’re going to take action against people like that and they will be banned sooner or later…

So, because it isn’t ‘anything special’, she isn’t allowed to say it’s still an issue?

maybe the devs should put in a hate speech filter that perma bans accounts at the minimum in text.

voip they need to look at their systems

report system needs to be completely changed and altered
