To everyone bringing agendas into Overwatch

Most of us play video games to have fun. We like video games because they’re fun. We’re not here to care about insecure SJWs who think the world is going to end because a good game doesn’t have a character that panders to them, we’re here to play video games and have fun.

We don’t play a video game to deal with politics, agendas and real-world problems or anything like that. We play video games. So that we can have fun. So we can experience what the game has to offer us, by first exchanging currency for said game, and ultimately finding enjoyment by experiencing the gameplay of the video game we have purchased.

Basically, fun is all that matters to gamers. And sales are all that matter to game companies. Minorities don’t matter, majorities don’t matter, none of that matters. If you care about genuine issues in the real world, and not fake issues created by deluded SJWs, go outside and do something productive instead of playing video games.

Are you playing a video game? Then you’re supposed to experience the gameplay and allow the fun to flow to you. Are you not having fun? Then either the gameplay isn’t something you enjoy or you’re bored of the game after having played it too much. Basically, video games are about fun. They’re made by game companies so they can make money in return for delivering enjoyment to you.

Do you understand yet? Video games have always been about fun. Not your feelings, not your agendas, nothing but selling you an entertaining distraction. When I buy a sandwich, I don’t worry if the sandwich or the people who made it are “Transphobic” or if they hate minorities. I buy the sandwich, I eat it, I enjoy it’s flavors and nutrition, then I move on with my day.

Similarly with Overwatch, I don’t worry about anything other than the main, true and only purpose of Overwatch. I play it, I have fun. Sometimes fun is hard because the community is mean, but when I stop having fun I close the game for the day and play again some other time. Blizzard could be racist for all I care and that wouldn’t change anything, they’re a good, successful business and they sell us fun. If you don’t want the fun, and instead you want to cry about irrelevant nonsense, please direct said nonsense to the appropriate garbage bin so that we can recycle your nonsense and see if we can create anything of value out of it.

Thank you, have an excellent day and remember that if you’re playing Overwatch, you’re supposed to be enjoying it. And if you’re in the competitive queue, give it your all and have fun by knowing you’re trying your best to win and get better. Because let’s be honest, vocal minorities are probably the same nutjobs that started the Omnicrisis. So calm down and have fun with Overwatch unless you want to be seen as an Anti-Omnic extremist. Or don’t, because I don’t care that millions of omnics are being oppressed and slaughtered every year. I just wanna play video games, if you want to eradicate all omnics then that’s your business, not mine. I’m here for the video games. You do you, but keep that stuff outside of my video games.

The forums are like Tumblr. And the forums only represent like less than 3% of the OW playerbase. I guarantee 98% of us don’t care about representation in this game for the same reasons you listed above.

I love the design. I love the art. I love the style. I love the sounds and voice acting. It’s all great.

As you said, it’s much easier for people to be keyboard warriors than to actually go out and be productive about changes they want to see. People much rather complain than make real fixes and changes themselves.

I would also imagine people getting overly obsessed with representation in video games also probably have pretty boring lives.

No tldr?

Just from skimming this it looks like you think people that are asking for representation aren’t having fun?

Fun is subjective, I have fun with the game, but I also really love the lore and wish there was more of it. I have fun reading about the characters and their lives and relationships.

OP is saying that the people complaining about representation are completely missing the point of the video game’s purpose.

That’s kinda strange? Because video games have multiple purposes.

Like, Mario games are enjoyable and fun to play, and one of their purposes is to provide players with enjoyment.

But Mario games also have a story. Mario is an Italian plummer that’s trying to save a princess. Giving players that story is another purpose of the game.

The people complaining are complaining about that second purpose, not the first.

Enjoying a story and enjoying the game play kind of goes hand-in-hand.

OP is talking about overall enjoyment. Also, I personally feel like the people complaining are mostly complaining just to complain.

I don’t believe in “tl;dr” because of many reasons. One of them being that haste makes waste. No, it’s not that I have any sort of grudge against these somewhat annoying people who preach and demand diversity, but rather I’m annoyed because these things are unrelated to the purpose of video games. I’m all up for peace, love, equality and all that good stuff, don’t get me wrong. But last time I checked, video games were made so that people can create a new, exciting form of entertainment to sell to people. We especially play video games to escape from the real world and it’s issues, we even use video games to take a break from our own issues so that we can relax for a moment. And besides, the gaming industry itself has real problems relating to video games. Non-Video Game related problems should stay outside of video games. When I play Overwatch, I don’t want to hear stuff about life and the rest of the world, I want to think about all the fun I’m gonna be having when I play my favorite heroes. Am I getting through to you yet? This would all be so much easier if everyone, and I mean each and every last person would just relax and think of how to tackle their issues in a healthy and constructive manner.

And you can do all that just fine. But what does it have to do with a bunch of people asking for LGBTQ or whatever characters? How does it affect your gameplay if hero x is gay? It doesnt.

Not necessarily. I really enjoyed the Monster Hunter World story but it feels so boring to play.

I have a friend that really loves the Overwatch lore and characters, but they don’t really ever play it.

It’s possible to split those in two.

Not really. It just seems like you don’t like it when the game includes real life issues and makes a point to do so. I do. It’s just a difference in what we appreciate in a game. You can’t say what does or doesn’t belong in Overwatch, that’s up to the people that work on Overwatch. You can disagree with it, but ultimately, it’s up to them to decide whether or not to include something in a game.

There’s nothing wrong with disagreeing with their decisions, but there’s also nothing wrong with asking for more from them. Everyone has their own “agenda,” even you, and there’s no point in telling people what they should get from a video game. Focus on what you want from a game, not what other people want.

Yeah, you’re not wrong, but in short, I think OP is just essentially saying that people go to…let’s say a circus…to have fun. You go to a circus performance to be entertained. You don’t go to the circus to point out that the elephants are Asian elephants, and not African elephants, or that the clowns aren’t diverse enough.

You go to the circus to be amused, distracted from real world problems, and to enjoy your time. It’s counterproductive to go to a circus and then get mad that that there’s not enough representation.

Hopefully that makes sense.

And how does complaining about “diversity” and “representation” in a video game, because said game doesn’t have a character of a specific race/gender/ethnicity or combination of such things, help said people in the real world? For example: Putting a transgender hero in Overwatch isn’t going to have any real impact on the issues that transgender people face. Is it going to make transphobic governments in certain countries change their minds? Nope. Is it going to help transgender people get the support they need? Nope. Why talk about LGBTQ things when you’re on a video game, how does it affect your cause? It doesn’t. Checkmate, by the way. Because again, with all due respect the vast majority of us care more about playing the video game to enjoy the video game through it’s gameplay, visuals and sound.

Just my 2c

It’s a massive audience, and I can understand the desire to use it as a platform. I mean what does OW have to do with Breast Cancer? Nothing, but because millions play it, we can use it to raise nearly 13 million dollars for research (which is frikkin amazing). So if someone has a personal struggle and access to this audience, I can see why they’d want to leverage it.

I don’t know if it’s appropriate or not, but I do understand why people do it.

I see what you’re going for, but I also see it differently.

Like OP is going to the circus for the clowns, but there are people that go for the animals (like myself, because clowns are scary as heck). Some people notice that there are 27 elephants and only one tiger, and they wonder what gives? Shouldn’t there be more animals?

People go for different reasons, and they have different expectations. There’s nothing wrong with having different reasons, expectations, and wants.

It also doesn’t make sense that the person going for the clowns is upset with the people complaining about the animals.

And that’s not counting the guy going so he can confront his fear of clowns!

This doesn’t exactly prove my point wrong. I understand that there are people out there who care about real world issues, but there’s a big difference between contributing towards solving such issues, and complaining on a video game because said game doesn’t have something you want. It’s childish, and many of these vocal minorities tend to have a “If you’re not with us, you’re against us” type of mentality. They also make threats and spout plenty of verbally abusive things. I don’t negotiate with terrorists, and last time I checked the definition of a terrorist is “A person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.” I’m not saying activists in general are terrorists but getting threatened by lawsuits, having people tell you that they’ll get you fired from your job, getting accused of doing horrible things all because you’re not actively being a part of something? It’s very unacceptable behavior. Politics, agendas, things that SJWs and Anti-SJWs spout, none of it belongs in Overwatch. And I have every right to explain the core fundamentals of a video game. You are factually incorrect if you genuinely believe that the purpose of video games aren’t a business model crafted to expand the entertainment industry and sell a form of entertainment to consumers. You buy a game, you play it, hopefully you have fun. Not once have video games ever been about politics or agendas, and not once will they ever be. You’re doing the equivalent of bringing an indoor barbecue to a library, if you want to grill your meats and cook things you’re supposed to do it in an appropriate area. Yes, many of us enjoy barbecues but there’s a time and place for everything. There’s a good reason why political nonsense has been irrelevant throughout most of the gaming industry’s lifetime.

Requesting diverse heroes in a game that caters to diversity isn’t going to hurt you, or me, or Overwatch, or that guy over there, or the fella wallkin’ down the street, or anybody else. It isn’t something to fear, or panic over, or launch into multiple consecutive diatribes about.

These heroes have all been great – even heroes like Zarya, who was designed from a specific request for diversity of body shapes. This moral panic from the far right is misplaced, just like it was with Dungeons & Dragons in the 1980’s, as well as Mortal Kombat and Doom from the 1990’s. Minorities, gays and women aren’t going to ruin vidya’ games.

You don’t have to TL;DR, but damn, at least use the ‘enter’ key for line breaks lol

I’m not really seeing OP’s post as “fearful”, it’s more just a statement that essentially is saying “Hey, everybody. It’s going to be all right. Don’t forget it’s just a video game and it’s designed with enjoyment in mind, not pandering political interests.”

Of course people are allowed to express their opinions and frustrations, but find a better outlet for it. That’s what rallies and conventions and communities are for.

Minorities who constantly preach and demand said requests do not help solve the issues of Overwatch, neither do they help solve the many issues of the world and it’s people. Putting a transgender person in Overwatch will quite literally not solve any of Overwatch’s issues, neither will it make the world less transphobic and neither will it give aid to transgender individuals. Your argument of “It’s not hurting anyone” is flawed, because in reality you’re not helping anyone either. Can you accept the truth yet? I am a pansexual person who truly wants peace in this world, but to me the LGBTQ community is full of annoying, counterproductive people who give themselves and people like them a bad image. Referring to my original point, politics and agendas aren’t video game related so take them out and put them where they belong so that they can be handled appropriately.

Is Zarya political? Is Tracer political?
