There’s not really anything new or substantive here that’s worth responding to.
What I will point out, though, is that there’s further evidence that queue times were a major factor.
Specifically, see this long post from Jeff Kaplan in January 2020: Blizzard save your game! go 1/3/2 - #100 by JeffreyKaplan
There, he is talking about their thought process and playtesting regarding 1-3-2 role queue (which ended up being made an experimental mode in OW1 a while after Jeff’s post). He specifically says that the idea of potentially going to 1-3-2 role queue was a result of the team “brainstorming ways to shorten DPS queue times.” If they came up with the idea of 1-3-2 role queue specifically as a result of trying to improve DPS queue times, what are the chances that they ended up doing 1-2-2 role queue without the decision being motivated by queue times? It’s essentially zero. The idea of changing role queue to have just one tank clearly originated in the first place as a way to improve DPS queue times! And it’s also worth noting how little time it took them to identify the queue time problem and start trying to find ways to fix it—role queue was implemented in August/September 2019, and Jeff’s post indicates that by no later than December 2019 they were already “brainstorming ways to shorten DPS queue times,” including the idea of moving to one tank. This is because queue times were an existential problem with 2-2-2 role queue.
I’ll note that Jeff’s post actually is quite prescient regarding the other concerns and issues surrounding this decision, including gameplay issues. And I do think the paragraph about “the importance it places on the Tank player” has definitely played out, with some players (myself included, if I’m honest) not liking the added pressure from being the sole tank. They obviously considered all these issues in ultimately reaching the decision to move to 1-2-2 role queue. And that includes gameplay issues. But the idea that queue times were not a major factor in their decision to move to 1-2-2 role queue, when Jeff Kaplan has told us that the idea of changing role queue to have one tank came about as a result of “brainstorming ways to shorten DPS queue times,” is honestly just silly, regardless of a random tweet people have dug up from a lower-level employee.
