can anyone give me some tips on playing moira in comp?
Pee on the blue guys. Hide from the red guys. Bounce balls off walls.
lol I almost wanted to reply “that makes no sense”. but now it does.
Use heal orbs, not damage orbs.
Use heal orbs, not damage orbs.
Use heal orbs, not damage orbs.
(We lost a game today because of a Moira who kept spamming damage orbs even though we asked twice to use heal orbs instead. -> Moira got the best card, since she did most. Because the rest of the team just died and couldn’t do anything.
Whatever you think about “oh but in THIS situation damage orb seems ok.” No! Just cast heal orbs across your team, please. They heal 50% more than the damage orb does damage. And your team will be able to deal MUCH more damage as a consequence.)
Similarly, use Coalescence to heal your team mates if possible, as it heals 50% more than it deals damage.
And never ever target an enemy Roadhog with it. Wasted ult. Similarly it can be inefficient to target an enemy Orisa if she can Fortify. Targetting an enemy Reinhardt however is pretty efficient. But yeah, best is to line up your team mates with the beam so they get healed like crazy from it.
And use it from the far backline, so you don’t get interrupted/stunned.
Use heal orb in a 1v1 (especially against another Moira), instead of damage orb.
Moira can outlast a D-Va in a fight at medium-longish distance, as Moira’s lifesteal from her RMB attack will outheal the damage D-Va inflicts. Moira is kind of a D-Va soft counter this way ;).
Use your damage orbs to gain ult charge early in fights and for cleanup, and use healing orbs mid-fight to keep your team up when you run out of juice. Learning angles you can bounce your orbs off from is pretty useful too. Try to keep them as horizontal to the ground as possible. Otherwise, they may hit the ground and bounce up into space.
Try not to just hold down left click on your allies if they’re not in immediate need of healing (ie behind cover or shield). Your healing lingers, so you can tap spray to save on juice when the fight isn’t demanding. There’s a bug with right click where if you tap it at the right intervals, you’ll charge your resource up to at least twice as fast at the cost of DPS. Of course, Moira isn’t going to be going for kills anyway, so you can usually afford to do less damage for the sake of getting your juice back faster. The rhythm is just something you’ll have to practice on your own time.
Coalescence is one of the fastest charging ults in the game, so you should have it every fight. This means that you can use it fairly liberally as if it was an ability. Try to prioritize healing your own teammates over damaging enemies as it does twice as much healing as it does damage.
Fade should be used to escape being targeted or avoiding ults. If you have to use it to get into a better position faster, you should be questioning why you weren’t there to begin with.
The middle paragraph is honestly good for a lot of situations, but don’t not use damage orbs… They are a great way to build up ult or finishing players off at low damage, the trick is knowing when to do what, never damage orb when you have ultimate unless you are killing someone with it for sure. Heal balls are usually the right pick, but there are times like when your team isnt gonna take too much damage too fast that you should use damage. She is a very proactive healer and a player who doesn’t use her kit to the fullest won’t be as good as someone who knows when to use certain abilities.
Ult timing is key.
There isn’t a “only ult if” scenario for Moira. You get ult charge fast so use it.
If your team is scared to go in, tell the main tank to go in, and ult to back them up.
If your rhein charged in, ult to keep him alive.
If the enemy team tries to go in, ult to keep them at Bay.
If you’re surrounded with at least one teammate by Squishies on a capture point with a very low or no chance to be stunned, let that ult out.
The ult is better at healing than damaging, so try to keep allies alive first, and pick off heroes second.
For orbs:
Healing orb is the best orb for ult charge.
Damage orb is great for poking at over extended enemies and finishing off enemies at the end of a fight.
Damage orb + ult for pushes where you have the advantage.
Healing orb + ult for surviving zaryas ult and disadvantageous engagements.
Except
“Use damage orbs”
… when you can get a quick valuable kill without letting your team die.
The only use heal orb tip wont do you any good in bronze.
Switch Ana 4head
also ALWAYS use an orb before you press Q.
U have a new orb available after the ult so you basically get one for free.
Play gud… or more specifically don’t die.
The advice from other people orb usage, positioning, combo’ing orbs and ult is all good advice, which will help you in higher ELO’s
But in bronze, given two choices:
- Healing a team mate to help them win a fight.
- Adding your damage to theirs to win a fight.
I would strongly recommend sticking with damage.
Use your healing orbs to keep yourself alive.
And if any situation gets too hot, use fade to get back to safety (and/or health packs).
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a garbage strat that will only get you so far, but its likely the best one for Bronze.
Play Moira how she is meant to be played: a healer. Your time should be divided about 85% healing, 15% damage. Don’t underestimate how much healing her orb gives, use it when your team pushes through a choke while tapping your heal spray.
If you play this healing heavy style, your resources will usually be pretty low, so you’ll need to be tapping your secondary fire, since it fills up resource a lot faster than just holding it down. Also, general tip to jump after your fades for a little extra momentum boost.
Moira is capable of massive amounts of healing, but she requires an aggressive team. If your team wants to sit back and poke your pee bar will run down really quickly and you’re essentially down your primary healer, and then everyone dies because they think they can just stand there and poke forever because you allowed to them to absorb so much damage without engaging.
One little tip I like: if the other team is running a Dva I can usually be super aggressive as Moira and genreally deal more damage than usual. Dva is an ult battery for Moira, she can’t do anything to stop your damage other than kill you, which is hard for her to do unless she catches you without CD’s. If you quickly tap the RMB you will deal very little damage but you will fill your healing bad very quickly. Dva makes that easy to do. I’ll only do the tapping when I’m less than 1/4 full or so.
I’d also say that you need to aim your orbs. I try to look for two bounces, but started looking for just one (what I mean here, is that make sure that your orb will bounce back through where your team is/will be at least once. Once you get that down, look for two bounces where it will cross your teams path. It’s kind of like 3D pool.
Also, admit when she’s not working. She doesn’t have any real utility so if you aren’t using her for massive heals, you’ll be more effective as just about any other healer.
My disclaimer: I switched to PC recently and haven’t yet jumped in to comp on PC (I came from console). I just really enjoy playing Moira and thought I’d add my two cents here.
I think lots of people massively underestimate the importance of tracking as Moria, that goes for both her heal spray and damage leech. Be good at tracking.
