Came back to the game recently, been trying out more of Sombra just for fun and was wondering if anyone had any tips for when playing as her? I never really feel feel like I’m doing that much damage, I usually get bronze damage medals as her which I don’t know if I could be doing better or if that’s average
I do manage to hack high priority targets, genji, enemy sombras, tanks, doom and the like but damage is the one thing I don’t know if I can be better about.

- Don’t die.
- Terrorize the enemy supports.
- Hack Rein’s shield.
- If they have a doomfist or hammond, don’t play the enemy backline if your team needs help. Instead, stay with the team and hack either when they dive your supports.
- Don’t tunnel vision going for a 6 man EMP if your team is not in position to follow it up on it. You can’t kill them alone.
- Oh… and don’t die.
I’m no expert with her but enjoy her in quickplay occasionally. You don’t need gold damage on sombra to play her effectively. If you can neutralize the enemies harassing your backline or keep their backline busy dealing with you instead of healing their team, then you’re doing your job effectively. If you’re dying repeatedly, just switch off of her that match. She can be rendered useless pretty easily if they switch to counter you.

Hack-> EMP → Hack
Nothing I enjoy more as Dva than that
Use high ground and hack tanks to farm emp. Learn some jump spots for Sombra to make this easier. Mastering this alone will make you better than like 95 % of Sombras.
as a sombra player, shes one of my fav dps, usually her damage is fairly low. she only gets more than bronze medals if you have a widow on ur team lol. sombra isnt as much dps as she is support with a solely damaging gun honestly. dont focus on damage numbers and focus on hacking high value targets, protecting your team from dive, and keeping track of the ults being tossed around. cooldowns are also a big thing to keep track of. like, theres no point in hacking a zarya with no bubbles. dive snipers and supports as well, youre the safest dive hero to play that isnt a tank
I’m not exactly a great sombra player, so not sure how far this advice will go, but how I tend to play:
When you’re not trying to assist your team, hacking enemies sometimes isn’t worth as much as just getting greedy with gunfire (for extra ult charge), because the enemy knows where you are the second you start hacking. It also helps to try and time your attacks with your team’s push, because the enemy will have to split their resources.
I personally only try to hack before farming ult charge if the enemy has some ability (See: Tanks) that hinders me from doing a decent amount of damage and getting out safely.
Otherwise, I’ll be hunting for opportunities to finish off targets or enable my teammates.
Enabling teammates can vary between shooting and distracting enemies that can provide value to a team fight or hacking priority targets as your team initiates a push. If the enemy team is relying too much on one person to hold the defense or if an enemy is about to escape a fight, then those enemies typically become high value hack/harassment targets.
Simply put, hacking is best for enabling your team and timing is important. Otherwise, prioritise charging emp and confirming easy kills.
Utilize high ground as much as possible. Dont just hack the right targets, timing is key as well. Need to catch them off guard so your team can follow up. Also cancel channeled abilities from enemies.
bronze is acceptable, especially considering another dps can do far more raw damage and the offtank can easily compete with her for that medal
the following isnt sombra specific but as an opportunistic and flanky character it is important. at some point you are likely to hit a limit with how much dmg you can pump out and it might be worth it to look at your timing instead of stressing over dmg. good timing makes a small amount of damage go much further than a large amount of damage
it comes down to more than just “shooting someone at the same time as someone else = easy kill” - the much stronger concept is the idea that people can’t focus or react properly with a ton of things going on (“mental stack”), and its true for every rank in the game. if you pressure someone at the right time, they will make a bad decision, and if you pressure multiple people they will make decisions that have far different intents than eachother (like ana ignoring her frontline, or tanks splitting different directions)
the most common example of this is reinhardt vs reinhardt. you wait until they engage (either rein is pushing into swing range) and only then do you make a play, about 0.5 seconds later. not in perfect sync, but slightly behind, because that shifts the primary focus away from you as a squishy while still being a threat that exerts pressure. it draws red team’s attention away from the frontline for as long as you’re alive and in position
a big part of it just comes down to intuition. you build that intuition of “when” to start pressuring someone and it will feel like you’re doing way more effective damage than you really are
Sombra can shut down a Ball, Doom and Rein and make them helpless sitting ducks. Ball more specially be beneficial by giving your team juicy ult charge. Doom becomes useless and he would try to hide when the hack goes off. Rein will just be hiding and swinging his hammer.
Sombra is a hard counter to Zen. His large hitbox can collect all the spread of her bullets. He has no mobility when you do. And EMP reduces his hp to 50.
