I`m not a tank player but decided to do my placements for once. What i noticed is that everyone calls me retarded for not wanting to defend on the point, but hold people at the choke, or if i want to attack through a choke, i walk through it asap so i wont take too much poke dmg, but they say i dont wait for the other to be ready to go in. Like i know if i wait i die, so thats the wrong play, but if i got my teammates wont follow and i die too? And if my teammates wont support me defending the choke even though thats the best place to defend then that seems also the wrong play to make? Like how am i supposed to play?
You control the battlefield.
Your team, and theirs, cannot move unless you play for space.
Sitting on point and waiting for the enemy team to regroup and refresh their cooldowns is foolish.
Abandoning your team to 1v5 the enemy on choke is also foolish.
You simply have to improve your gamesense, read what the enemy team is doing, play for space, and peel for your backline.
In short, make sure your healers don’t die, but also make sure you are in an affirmative position.
And most importantly, every time you start a match, pray that your teammates aren’t all lone wolves who think they’re playing Call of Duty Deathmatch.
I get that im supposed to make space as a tank. Im going through the choke first as im the only one who can take the dmg. That should create the space for my team to push in? Its either that or waiting at the choke doing nothing and hope someone gets a pick. How do i get my team to follow me? But somehow they just decide where im going is stupid and dont follow at all and the team dies.
Focus on taking initiative. You are like a guard guarding a gate. That gate is all of the space behind you. If anyone comes close to the gate, you whack them. If anyone tries to climb over the gate, you check them. By simply existing you create space.
Your kit is limited to the amount of damage you can deal to one player, but you have more health so you’ll win most 1v1 fights.
What I don’t think you understand is the importance of positioning.
For example, if a Soldier is targeting one of your DPS or Supports, is it economically better for them to take damage or for you to take damage? As a tank you have numerous options to reduce the amount of damage you take yourself, and as a function of damage economy, you also reduce the amount of damage others take. Further, any damage you take benefits your healers.
If your team is dying all around you, consider preventing them from dying. Chaperone them, herd them, keep them safe. The chances that one of your squishies will die diminishes exponentially with your presence. And if your squishies cannot find you, then consider your positioning.
The strategy for tank is honestly map, team, and comp dependent. If you have a more coordinated team with dive characters on a map with high ground, you play differently from a brawl comp which plays differently from a poke/sniper comp. If you seriously want to play tank, you’ll need to work on your hero pool to be able to switch if the enemy team starts to focus on countering you.
Honestly as a tank you’re not going to be effective without the cooperation of the team. Your duty is to make space, protect your support and to be brave.
As main support, I can only advise you to be prepared that 9 games out of 10 there is no teamplay.
And therefore play Winton who will destroy the opposing backline.
It’s the only effective thing you can do.
From the post I can guess the rank already. Don’t listen to teams telling yo to defend on point or payload. That’s not what you should be doing
Tanks have the power to carry games if they have a team capable of taking advantage of what the tank is doing. By your teams not letting you do your job they are in fact throwing.
There is a big different though, between map control and over extending. If you as the tank reposition or rotate your team should be playing off of you. Tanks dictate the pace of the fight. The problem youre going to have is that in low ranks you aren’t normally going to get the follow through from the team.
Heres a good video on how to do tank stuff and what you should be doing.
