[throwing] trend?

I’ve noticed recently something that I think is a new trend?

People who are extremely unhelpful and toxic from the get-go, who blame everyone else for losing the game - as a way to mask the fact that they are throwing to bronze. If they pin it on someone else, they make it look like someone else’s fault so they don’t get mass reported before even hitting bronze.

I noticed this because I started seeing how most extra-toxic people are always the people sitting afk (not just when typing). Or running into choke head-first without even firing back.

These people will respond with “f you” when you say hello at the start of a game.
This isn’t the “you’re ult was dumb” kinda people. This is the “everyone but me is an idiot/waste go kys” kinda people. Or the kinda person who mirco-analyzes every move of a particular teammate to point out every little thing they did wrong (to make it look like their fault). Who when you say something back (defending yourself or a teammate) just tell you to shutup.

Moral of the story? Always report abusive chat. It’s probably the only reportable thing that gets punished anyways.

This isn’t even remotely new. Throwers have been doing that for years. Sometimes they’re outright toxic and focus on one teammate, and sometimes they try to push people into playing badly.

Ohhh I guess I’m just now realizing it isn’t just someone being tilted and toxic but having an ulterior motive.

This has been a thing since forever and because people are mindless sheeps 90% of the time it works.
Never report the who is told to be throwing, always report the one telling it.

Its a comp game, anything bad will make the whole team play worse. I follow the rule of staying silent if one has nothing good to say. And I report everyone who doesnt follow that rule.(except when its an obvious joke because the are friends or similiar)

Also if you havent said or written anything during a match you cant be reported for abusive chat (or rather said, reports made for abusive chat during that match will be invalid)

I never report, at least not often.

& if I do? It’s well deserved

Oh yes i have seen this several times. I usualy try to defend people who are targeted. But yeah its extremely dumb and lame abd these people makes me sad.

What is beyond me is why would they throw to bronze? Isn’t that advancing in opposite direction?

aw :frowning:
are you new here?
They use alternative accounts (not their main account) to rank down to bronze so they can have fun stomping in (what is to them) easy matches. But basically contributes to ruining the game for those in bronze trying to get better and rank up.

Thats only one of many reasons why peopke do it.

How does my question, about people doing completely stupid and unnecessary things, makes me “new” here?

Let’s say that what you have told me is true. I think that is bottom of “society”. Using a game, to go to lower rank, to be amongst the “noobs” to only ruin their fun. Like, what the hell is your issue?

Second thing, how many of people do you think is out there doing that? I am sure I was at bronze, once.

What you are saying is false
Already been proven ab chat penalties on accounts not active in chat

I report players all of the time. For quitters I use Inactivity and Gameplay Sabotage.

I think the comment was because smurfing (as in throwing to a lower rank to noob stomp, not alts in general) is a well recognized issue on the competitive ladder. I don’t think it was intended to be offensive.

Smurfs are at most ranks, but they are more obvious and more abundant in Bronze. In solo queue I was seeing about one every night in mid Bronze. As a big stack you run into them a lot more often. You also see both sides of smurfs in a six stack because throwing is easier in stacks. In solo queue you’ll see noob stomping more often than throwing.

Reasons that people smurf:

  • They have good mechanics but lack the gamesense to succeed at their actual rank. This leads them to believe mechanics don’t matter at high rank because their team doesn’t pick x tank or y support, so gg. Lack of understanding of the game and self reflection means they stagnate for long periods of time. They can compete at games in lower ELOs where players have as little strategy as they do.
  • They are just bullies. People who don’t have a lot of empathy will do things that boost their own ego at the expense of others. They generally do this wherever they can get away with it. Online games have very little consequences other than feeling bad (not a problem if you struggle to evaluate things from someone else’s POV).
  • Some people derank so that they can boost low ranked players. This again is something you will see more in stacks, because a six stack is efficient for someone in the business of boosting.
  • Deranked accounts can be sold online to smurfs that are too lazy to derank.

There are ways that the dev team detects things like smurfing and boosting, but it’s not perfect (because some people just suck at the game or play real streaky). Just try to keep your team’s moral up when you notice a smurf in a game and play for stats. They are going to ruin your game, but try to not let them ruin the whole night.

I didn’t take it as offensive, I am rather replying question with question because I don’t get why asking me that.

Anyways, I understand what are you saying but I just find it so hard to believe that some of you people are experiencing this all the time. I mean, I have recent matches where I am really not sure of the outcome. At first, it looks like they are super destroying us but we just make a subtle change and we are turning the tides.

Maybe, I am not showing enough understanding because most of the time I see what is going on during field and I’m rather trying to change the situation instead of thinking “smurfs or not smurf”.

But yeah, as you said, they can ruin your game but try to not let them ruin the whole night. Not sure what you can do about it.

It’s hard to tell in Bronze because people naturally play inconsistently. So that widow that is destroying you might just be having a good game.

But then there are the players with open profiles that show their season high as mid Diamond and their current rank as 800 SR. I think people suspect smurfs where there are none, but there are most certainly smurfs in low ELOs.

I saw one of those in qp. he was randomly toxic to a teammate from the get go and when I looked on his account he was working his way down to bronze from plat. I know they don’t rly do that in qp to rank down but it was very confusing cause he most of the time just stood in the choke and let himself be killed. maybe he is training for comp how to not make it look like throwing.

Does it ever start to feel redundant?

Sure does, but at least I’m doing something about it and not just ignoring it.

What’s wild is how often defending someone makes the aggresser into a serious thrower.

Trollface: Pharah switch.

PharahMain: No you.

TrollFace: Your garbage XD kys

WhiteKnight: Pharah isn’t the problem. Stop running in.

TrollFace: fine then, whatever, now I am throwing.

Seems like a bit of a misuse of the internet “white knight”. That’s more of someone who defends someone (typically a woman) that they want something from.

Some people just don’t like bullies.
