I really love the idea of having character or random events, but I think the team could get more creative on what our goals is instead of just victories.
For D.va we could eat ultimates, block x amount of damage, get x self destruct kills, you could really tie a emote or skin to a kind-of-hard-to-get-but-entirely-possible-in-two-weeks achievment like task.
There could also have been map related tasks like put a nano cola spray over that thing in the middle that displays ads on Lijiang Garden or cover the anti-omnic propaganda on King’s row. Or maybe destroy random trinkets hidden around the maps for the event.
Of course, none of that could ever be tied to competitive mode in any way and maybe a no limits arcade would be necessary, but I really like the idea of having more stuff to do. After 2 years we are all pretty used to the gameplay loop and even the seasonal events.
And about the streams we have to watch, I’m not sure how they pick who they pick, there’s a lot of DPS players there (some that don’t even like D.va), but I like that they are taking the oportunity to boost some smaller partners. Would love to see some Affiliates there, but I guess it would be too much of a risk for somebody to say something dumb in front of 90k viewers.
I got most of my sprays watching Seagull on the first day and now there’s no incentive to watch the rest, but yeah, it’s something.
Speaking of sprays
THERE ARE SO MANY CUTE SPRAYS AND I CAN’T EQUIP THEM ALL AT ONCE! I HATE THIS GAME AND IT’S DEAD
HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?
I certainly don’t want to come off as ungrateful, but I don’t much care for it. An epic skin isn’t enough to make me want to participate in it, or sprays.
I’m VERY happy this kind of event is becoming a thing, just this one personally doesn’t appeal to me.
And yes I too wish that it required specific achievements in order to unlock, not just wins.
Would love if they did this kind of thing with more individual heroes between big events. At least the mains of those characters would love and appreciate it.
D.Va-specific achievements that everyone is going for at the same time when only one person per team can be D.Va would be a nightmare. So many people would just leave during hero selection if they didn’t get her, especially if achievements would take multiple games as her to get.
No Limits would present a problem for D.Va achievements, too, though. Good luck eating an ult or getting a kill with self-destruct when everyone is D.Va.
I don’t think they really want to encourage everyone fighting over one character that people might not otherwise want to be picking in order to complete tasks/quests. Just imagine the effects if they had a Torbjorn event and did that.
About the other objectives, I believe it would only be worth if its tied only to “no limits” or a special mode just for this “hide and seek” stuff. Otherwise people would race to pick DVA even in QP and spend the full match doing these instead of fighting, which would not be nice for the rest of the players. But its a nice idea.
I do enjoy this kind of event the same much as I enjoyed Mercy charity event. For the twitch part I love that they put streamers from many countries and languages, but I agree that the channel’s choice was pretty bad this time. Maaaany DPS only players, people who never play DVA or even other tanks and that also already have lots os viewers and fame. To me it would be better if they focused on the “theme” (if its a DVA event, prefer DVA mains or people who flex in tanks for some part of the gameplay) and/or that it gives more space to smaller streamers. Even if it can only be a partner and not an affiliate, Im sure there are stramers that would fit this event way better.
Maybe character specific achievements would be bad (but people already one trick all the time)
We could have fast paced arcades where people take turns being the character trying to get the achievement like how the Yeti hunter worked. I didn’t really see people complaining about Yeti/Mei only sprays.
Even if that wouldnt work We still could have themed achievements (on arcade if we are going to leave QP out of it)
Not to mention, then you have the D.Va player achievement hunting, which could potentially hurt the team as far as winning the match (which should always be a primary goal).
Winning a set number of matches for a skin is the way to go. Locking it behind achievements is the dumbest idea I have heard yet, for the reasons we both mentioned.
One idea for this special quests would be a FFA with the character only, just like people already do in the custom games. For instance, a Ana event could have a Ana paintball special mode in the arcades. A Hog event could have a FFA in Illios’ Well with hook only. A DVA challenge could be taking other DVA’s out of the Meka, etc. Things that give a challenge but its not impossible even if you dont usually play with that character. Its also an opportunity to stimulate people to get out of their comfort zone an trying out new heroes and improving their ability at something specific.
I just did my weekly lootbox run and went to FFA with Moira and finished both at the same time. Using her is kinda cheap, but it’s fast and relatively painless.
