Thoughts on Sombra?

I’m not having as much fun with Sombra as I use to. The buffs haven’t really changed her for me, but the nerfs are being felt hard. Most of the time I just wish I could get EMP faster and not see my hacks breaking to LOS more than damage.

Looking at some posts I’ve seen on here and on r/Overwatch, it feels as if I’m in the minority here, but I feel like Sombra’s doing totally fine currently.

I’ve been maining her for a while now, and when the rework was announced I was uncertain of what would happen and also wary that she’d be hacking people so often that it’d feel oppressive and people would complain. When the rework hit Live, I had to get used to the slightly different playstyle, but I really like how she became more free and less team-dependent. Assassinations became easier; the faster hack and tighter weapon spread makes her better in combat; she can mess up Genjis, Pharahs, Lucios, Mercys, and whoever else better now; etc. Overall, I like the trade of the ‘EMP-bot’ to a much more DPS-feeling Sombra.

The recent hack nerfs have been disliked by a lot of Sombra mains, but I think it was a good move on Blizzard’s part and it barely messes with how fun it is to play her.

I played her since launch where she was literally garbage, but she was fun to play regardless, so i sticked with her. That doesnt mean that she doesnt deserve some help. For all intents in purposes they tried to make her a better hero, but thats not reflected in her pickrate at all. She is still F-tier.

She’s garbage now, Hack barely works and as a result of that (when combined with her current DPS) she’s back to being a mediocre pick with the added kick in the teeth being the removal of her ability to at least be a bit useful by being an ult bot.

The buffs she had were what she needed and Blizzard panic nerfed them before she even really had a chance to hit competitive because apparently Blizzard still haven’t the foggiest idea about what to do with Sombra.

I like playing her.

My only issue atm is the LoS changes that were given to hack. It feels crappy, and random things like lightposts, bikes that you can see over, poles, etc. do break LoS even though they shouldn’t.

Same with Tracer blinking…hacking her is straight up impossible because blink = disconnect hack even if they remain on your screen and you track them.

I can’t judge anything else until this change is fixed.

Her hack is only 0.05s (50ms) faster, is now plagued by numerous LOS issues, and breaks on fast movement from heroes like genji and tracer. You think this is an improvement for combat?

I dont understand why they don’t just put back in the 0.1s buffer and make the cast time 0.75s. That’s equivalent to a 0.65s hack but keeps the leniency and avoids breaking on random crap like lamp posts and pieces of wood.

There are times when you go in for assassinations and hacking barely matters: you want to shoot, kill, get out. The tighter weapon spread undoubtedly helps with that, and the longer translocator time gives you an easier time finding a target, doing what you need to do, and maybe even staying to fight a little longer. You can be in the fight more, and I think that’s definitely an improvement for combat.

As for the recent LOS changes, I honestly can’t say much about that. I haven’t noticed my hacks being broken by stuff like that, but I have heard others claim there are issues with it, so you might be right.

Because the whiners came out and complained about something that was in the game since the beginning, only now after the buffs.

They didn’t have a problem with it before because hack was either ineffective against certain heroes or it was incredibly easy to pull off, or people just never went against Sombra because she was unviable prior to the buffs.

After the buffs, people went against Sombras more often - mainly because people wanted to try her, but her pickrate was slowly going back down to normal. Having been exposed to more and more people playing Sombra with her new hack speed, they got pissy and complained about the .1 second leniency.

If they just removed that, it might have been fine. But they changed the LoS mechanics in general, not just removing the grace period. Fault #1.

Fault #2 is people whining about how she can rehack them after (which no smart Sombra player did, anyways) and now she has a 2 second cooldown after its interrupted.

Basically tl;dr people complain about the core things that Sombra’s always been able to do rather than the buffs she received, and want to cripple the hero who has the only 2 abilities interrupted by literally 0 damage because she was “unfun” with the core mechanics she had before. :))))))

Don’t worry, they’ll at least fix hacks LOS…in like, a year

It’s dumb, but I was so used to the old LOS that I would slightly turn away when I was almost done hacking a health pack. Sometimes I forget the LOS change and find myself taking 2 or 3 tries to hack a health pack.

I dont think it’s possible to just remove it. The grace period was the solution for when enemies got blocked from LOS by small objects. If there was no grace period, it would disconnect immediately. To my knowledge, the new LOS checks are intended to prevent getting blocked by small objects like breakables. The problem is it doesnt work correctly. The best word I can use to describe it is that it feels very “rigid”, or too strict.

I’ve played Sombra since she launched and I can tell you she is much worse off now. Blizzard shifted her focus from EMP to hack, then they nerfed hack. She’s stuck as a stealth character that has to stand out in the open to get her ability off. Before you could dodge attacks while hacking now you sit in front of enemies and hope the enemy doesn’t see you, LoS isn’t broken for some random reason or you get shot from bullets out in the ether.

She doesn’t have any burst damage to rely on so you depend on a sub-par weapon to get anything done. Before you put in some effort to some value out of her. Now a days its like getting blood from a turnip.

They say they used the same mechanics that they used for Roadhog’s hook

People legitimately mistake Roadhog’s hook as a hitscan ability, rather than projectile…

So…adding it to a channeled ability just seems…I’m sorry, stupid. lol.

I mean she had a whole 1% pickrate before nerfs so clearly OPAF, she needs more but Sombra players are gonna have to wait another year before we get em.

Blizzard really dropped the ball on this change IMO. I’ll continue to play her since she’s my favorite hero, but I really don’t consider her to be improved at all. I don’t think I necessarily do any worse in my games (at least not by any noticeable degree), but she definitely doesn’t feel as good to play as she used to. If given the option to just evert all her changes by 3 weeks I’d easily take that option.

Same, honestly. I still love her, she’s still my go-to character (in b4 I’m called a one-trick because I know that’s coming), and I’m not giving her up because I feel like I’ve already been chased off of McCree and Reaper and Mercy just hasn’t been the same thanks to Valk being a HUGE snorefest of an ult. BUUUUUUT…hacking was never EASY? This makes it three times as hard as it ever was and these nerfs make the buff entirely negligible. She’s back at square one with zero compensation for them.

I never had trouble with the old hack. I never needed a longer translocator. The new spread isn’t that noticeable. So reversion would be preferable to what we’re dealing with here, but you know they never will because idiots never understood that Sombra hacking you meant she wasn’t shooting you and if you were shooting her to begin with, she couldn’t hack you at all.

You know i played sombra last night and i had alot of fun. Hacking fast is pretty entertaining especially when a tracer recalls but is then hacked on the other side. Thats so funny because the team just eats her for breakfast. I like throwing translocator in different spots to keep people guessing and i never throw it on a pack because people camp packs

I’m even trying to figure out why anyone would want to play her in Stage 3 as it is. She was literally used for EMP.

She can’t get it that fast even with her tighter spread…so none of this is compensation enough for any OWL player to want to run her lmao

Which is ironic cause they’re the ones who whined about her :joy:

The real question? Will a lot of us still be around in a year? The more changes they make, the less excited I get. Personally. And yeah, I know, a lot of people are gonna just say “bye” and say I’m overreacting and whatever. But honestly…whose interest will endure?
