Thoughts on 5v5 Open Queue?

I wish 5v5 Open Queue had never left the game.

At least for quick play … I know 6v6 has way more players than Open Queue did but I seriously miss it so bad…

What are your opinions on Open Queue? If you actively played 5v5 Open Queue, do you think the 6v6 mode is better? If you didn’t play it, do you still tend to pick Role Queue over 6v6?

- My reasoning for liking 5v5 Open Queue:
It’s probably just my (and a portion the like pool of, like, 100 people who played Open Queue’s) opinion that Open Queue is Peak Overwatch. You had the tank combinations that people were begging to have back, but the tanks were still individually strong (this strength is balanced out by being Big And Fat, though, so you naturally are a bigger focus, are easier to hit, and thus take more damage on your reduced health).
Not being the only person on the team who can play tank, alongside the characters still being individually strong, really helped alleviate that Constant Misery And Blame feeling that everyone attributes to tanking.

Despite still being strong, the 150 HP reduction honestly worked well to squelch the “unkillable superboss” feeling that you had when playing as DPS or Support, whilst still not immediately blowing up under focus fire (since you’re theoretically taking 16% less damage compared to 6v6, as well as your sustain abilities helping a bit more.

The rule of thumb was: If they have 2 or fewer tanks, you could run whatever and you’d still have a pretty comparable chance of winning.
In my opinion, it’s also preferable to Role Queue (even if both teams end up playing 1-2-2) because different maps inspire me to play different characters. And sometimes those different characters are in different roles :). Plus, I don’t really like playing as the superboss either! I like close duels no matter what role I’m playing.

- General 6v6 rambles:
That one extra player on each team provided by 6v6 really punishes both your individual and your team’s collective positioning in a way which stifles fun if you want to fool around and take massive flanks. It can also be extremely frustrating when you can’t coordinate a push because your teammate gets gunned down by 6 people for a bad peek. This is anecdotal evidence, sure, but: I find matches end before the first checkpoint way more than other modes simply because there are so many people to lock it down and it requires more strategy to break through a hold.

I understand this is sort of why people prefer 6v6–you have to be more methodical and every game doesn’t just devolve into a death match on top of an objective. But in Quick Play I simply want to play a different game. One where I’m not limited by role, isn’t 6v6, and isn’t Arcade (like let’s be serious), but that is still Overwatch.

- The issues:

  • People like 6v6. A lot of people view it as the only Real Overwatch experience. That’s fine
  • If they remove 6v6 again, people will be upset. So bringing back 5v5 Open Queue would require adding it to the selection.
  • The Open Queue playerbase was already pretty small (I would regularly run into a lot of the same people every session at least), so the extra splits of both 6v6 VS Open Queue and Regular Gamemodes VS Stadium would probably turn it into a ghost town.
  • Triple tank. The team that ran it either had to be severely underperforming or both teams had to run it for it to be remotely a fair match. Two tanks is manageable, but the third crosses a threshold of fairness. This was mostly an issue in Competitive since people are obviously going to lean toward the more optimal strategy. A solution to this would be to limit to 2 tanks (and what I was personally begging for), but that is sort of antithetical to the freedom of choice promised by “Open” Queue.

I am certainly biased and much more empathetic to Open Queue than most people are, given that I’ve spent like 500 hours in it. It was my favorite way to play the game! I know it probably won’t come back, but maybe other people feel the same way. I acknowledge that this is just wishful thinking.

All that being said: I’m primarily a Ball player so feel free to flame me. Idk. First post pls be nice :3 :PPP

5v5 OQ was lovably goofy, but it definitely had to make the sacrifice for 6v6 OQ.

Theres only so much “mauga-orisa-sigma-kiri-bap” i can take

Bring it back!

I miss it!

:crying_cat_face:

I much prefer 6v6 OQ. 5v5 is Ok and Ive had fun in QP 5v5, but 6v6 OQ is the closest you can get to OW1 and I love it!:raised_hands:

I’d be much more okay with it if it were max 2 tanks as well. Tank stacking has been broken in ow consistently since like 2018. And ow2 tank stacking was even more broken than peak goats. Having 3 buffed ow2 tanks was miserable.

I was so happy tonsee aatlis in arcade. yeah its 5v5 whatever…

Its 5v5 OQ…

Blizzard I would love to play the new map but ffs give me 1 normal mode please for the love of god.
we know t4 loves to go 5 tanks to win a silver game but come on. Gimme one mode where the goal is not to stack tanks to the limits…

No it sucks big time.

i was like hold on what the f is this? why do they have 2 or 3 tanks? ah gg alt+f4
why am I wasting time time with such a dumb mode.
well back to comp 6v6 it goes. the one playable mode thats left.

5v5 OQ, aka the land of permaGOATS, is a mode I’d never voluntarily touch again.

6v6 OQ is a mode I only play because there’s not an option for 6v6 RQ.

I don’t like OQ.
My patience with 6v6 OQ has been tested a lot lately, not because of 6v6, which I vastly prefer, but because of OQ.
Opening up a match and seeing 4 people instalock DPS and one person go LUCIO of all supports… yeah, alt-f4, goodbye.
That’s enough OW for today.

A Lucío that much prefers to speed everyone up than healing. Oh, I know the feeling. OQ is kinda rough sometimes! :sleepy:

But since I play Flex, I find OQ very much “normal” even when I have to switch from Tank to Healer to help balance the team out. It just works sometimes :relieved:

I always prefer oq to rq. I’m not held hostage by my teammates not swapping in their role as i can swap to any free hero available and counter problrm heroes myself. (Myself and ana kept getting farmed by winston with no one peeling for us. I swapped to dps to bodyguard the ana and we started winning after that)

A 2 tank limit in qp oq is a bit stifling to me. I understand that it’s more than necessary in comp, but i think qp could function with a 3 tank limit easily enough.
(I’ve been in 5v5 matches where no tank comps have defeated 3 and 4 tank comps)
It would free some of the fun and creativity again.

5v5 open queue makes no sense at all given the reasons they said they moved to 5v5…

I preferred when open queue was actually ‘open’. Whether it’s 5v5 or 6v6 isn’t terribly important to me, I just want a mode where I can switch roles mid-match if I feel like it, and the current 2-tank limit prevents me from doing that quite often. I would just play no limits in the arcade, but I’m not too keen on waiting in queue for 40+ minutes for a match that lasts less than 4 minutes.

Open queue is bad in general, but 5v5 is better just from less ultimate spam alone.

Wish the game was 1-3-2, raidboss tanks would be less of an issue and dps ultimate’s are way less broken then tank ults + no broken tank synergy, more space with another dps to take down supports, flee raidboss tanks

3 dps, 2 supports no tanks

i honestly didn’t mind old oq.
but since s9 oq is just pure cancer imho
Especially since s12.

and i wouldn’t be suprised if 5v5 oq doesn’t even nerf tank hp for oq.
