I, personally, love the addition, and kinda hope we at least get the option to take 3rd Person perspective into regular modes. I play a ton of Smite, so this is actually my preferred way of playing, so I’ve been kinda bumming out Stadium not to grind it, but purely because I feel more aware of my surroundings.
So, Blizzard? If you per chance see this? Could we get an answer as to if it would be possible to bring 3rd Person to other modes as an option for players, whilst keeping the default 1st Person?
That won’t happen because third person is a competitive advantage. Stadium is designed for third person and it’s up to the player (like me) to handicap themselves by playing in first person instead.
3rd person helps if an enemy is like 6-12 inches behind you, but that’s not an advantage to anyone who already had map awareness and a pair of headphones.
3rd person absolutely cripples aiming for any hero that requires precise aim, because your hitscan/projectile will no longer originate from center screen and therefore no longer terminate at your crosshair. Your crosshair will be either left or right of where your gun is actually shooting, depending on which shoulder you have it set to and how far away the opponent is.
Some characters never really require precise aiming, and so 3rd person is fine, but again not really an advantage if you already had okay map awareness.
In general I don’t think it’s that imporant, but some heroes like Brig or Winston would have been more convenient to play with higher FoV or 3rd person camera. There are many times where I use shield dash as Brig and 1st person camera confuses me for some time. I simply don’t understand where I am, because everything around me jumps and runs and what not.
I don’t care about “competitive” advantage, because this game is by all accounts just a silly party game.
I’m not sure of what specifically makes it feel worse, but personally I can tell the difference between Overwatch’s third person and other games that are actually built for third person shooting like Deadlock or Marvel Rivals. It just feels a lot worse in Overwatch for some reason, like you can really tell the engine wasn’t made for it.
The advantage isn’t from awareness its from positioning. 3P is massively more advantageous for precise positioning of your character model, and positioning is far more impactful than aim.
I’m very curious to hear in specific what kind of positioning you’re talking about, where one pixel here instead of there is a thing that is changing the outcome of games with any measurable frequency.
i would love if the main game had third person. For Mercy, it makes the entire game so much easier and i’m so much more aware of my surroundings and going back to first person in the core game feels so strange.
I better too would love if stadium had a QP mode so I could actually play the mode, since I’m almost all star rank on support my queues are very long.
Yea I agree it’s a fun idea for the people that want it but wouldn’t be great for Comp unless it had its own comp mode which is basically what Stadium kinda is.
