But it occurs to me that Mercy is basically kinda pigeon-holed as a DamageBoost bot at high ELOs.
(i.e. Alec’s stuff about her being really strong, despite only being strong because she’s pocketing an OPAF Sojourn)
Yeah let’s trust the Hearthstone dev about OW balance and not the, you know pro Mercy players with thousands of hours of experience who say she isn’t in a great spot
I think the devs would like to get rid of a bunch of boosted-sharpshooter/pharmercy concerns.
And that only a very small percentage of the playerbase that like playing-as and playing against that.
And I suspect the Mercy playerbase overall doesn’t really like that type of playstyle.
Where as “Prevent person you are healing from dying, with timed damage reductions”. Seems more in line with what the other +90% of Mercy players want to do with the hero.
Yes, I’ve been a Mercy player since season 3 and I’ve experienced basically all of her playstyles.
Healing focused is just straight-up boring and removes most skill expression. The game becomes about holding LMB on whoever is at the lowest health and that’s just not interactive and does not promote an active playstyle.
Playstyle you want /=/ a good playstyle.
I want to oneclip people all the time with tracer, but buffing her to make that more consistent is not healthy for the game or character.
20% damage reduction serves no purpose other than to slow down enemy ultimate economy. It doesn’t charge Mercy’s ultimate, it doesn’t reduce more damage than healing UNLESS your ally is taking more than 240 DPS.
Outside of that, it takes away all of Mercy’s activitey. You don’t look to damage boost abilities or swap healing to the most ideal target, you literally just hold RMB until someone takes 1 damage, then you heal, then you go back on RMB, and you ONLY do that on the lowest health target. It’s boring, it’s not active, it’s useless.
That’s only if you’re only damage boosting 1 target and now swapping for damage availability/ability catching.
I think the devs are going to get really desperate for additional Support players in about 2 weeks. And there’s a lot of ex-Overwatch players that were Mercy mains. As well as TF2 Medic players.
Like if Supports are 10-20% of the playerbase, and they want to move them up to 30%. What would that take?
IIRC, she’s always been pigeonholed as a damageboost pocketer in High Elos particularly in the E-Sport Scene. It’s kinda why her rework leaned towards pocketing. Back in the early days, pocketing was seen as a bad mercy gameplay like how people hate DPS moira-ing. Her ideal gameplay was HP juggling (rapidly switching between teammates to make sure everyone was at a “good enough” health level, which also meant she was zipping around the map constantly between teammates).
I mention the rework and pocketing because of Valk. Valk removes the need of hp juggling by reducing the need to switch teammates (since main beam and chain beam targets get the same amount of heals)
Devs pigeonholed mercy’s entire kit to pocketing, especially damageboost 'cause that’s how the Pros played her. (Juggling was only really good in uncoordinated teams of randos, in coordinated teams mercy doesn’t need to juggle that much and would pocket the team pharah or widow back in the day)
It’ll just make her a Damage reduction bot. From pocketing the team dps, to just pocketing the tank.
I am happy as long as Mercy gets any kinda buff but not taken away. Compensate Mercy users with sexy skins for this perhaps. That should shut most of us up.
