Things OWL has given us

a pro scene seperate from streaming
a failed mercy rework (she was reworked initially because “hide n rez wont be fun to watch”)
a failed second symmetra rework (still has no identity, but she’s fun)
role queue (killed the flavor of the game they made 3 years ago)

the good does not outweigh the bad, and they really should have waited to make the game an Esport.

edit: clarified why OWL is responsible for the mercy rework

Hmm… why did they give us those things?

Saved the game for low ranks
and added a new sense of teamwork and helped people work alil better in teams

Umm the rework was because she had a 0.25% pickrate and they intended to improve that.
they did
She is at 0.56% XDDDD

better than hiding and rezzing your team that got wiped with 5 ults from the enemy team that used 5 ults

Streaming offered a pro scene???

This was happening even before OWL. Playing OW as a team is vastly different from queuing into ranked.

These were brought about by what was happening in high level ranked as well. It wasnt exclusive to OWL.

What about all the good memories and camaraderie created between OWL teammates and community members that went to arenas, bars, and whatnot to watch the games?

Mercy rework was pre OWL, gigabrain

and they all hated it and wanted her nerfed much harsher and much faster so they could stop playing her.

and it was longer than 120 days.

  • Point 1 is true
  • Point 2 is true, it’s still a bit of a failure today in the sense of playing as Mercy too, but it’s no longer a problem for those playing against Mercy
  • Point 3 is true I guess, I don’t main Symmetra but going on what I mostly hear and see
  • Point 4, role queue did sort of help avoid the five ‘damage’ teammates scenarios which more often than not usually lost against what would also often be (in my experience anyway) versus a more coordinated team that had tanks and healers too

Talking of reworks, even D.Va’s partial rework has been a bit of a miss too. Overwatch isn’t what it was in the first year or so, it hasn’t been that for quite a long time sadly. There’s a lot of focus on the pro scene, namely OWL, which is unfortunate. Discussing some of the community feedback and interaction with their community has been and still is a low priority, so it appears anyway.

Unfortunately OWL is also responsible for whining until they got the invulnerability buff for Mercy while rezzing, which ultimately resulted in the hide’n’rez tactics… so, the OWL in Collaboration with Blizzard is to blame for that too…

Personally I wish the OWL had never existed. I think OWL has contributed to ruining the game, at least for me.

The biggest sin owl commited was killing the apex tournaments cause they were actually awesome.

If we are voicing our subjective opinions I would like to pitch that the biggest sin the OWL committed was to exist in the first place. I absolutely detest the Overwatch e-sport, I detest every single one of the Overwatch professionals, and while I can admire the time and dedication it takes to get really good at the game I detest how their opinions seem to be a deciding factor for Blizzard’s changes to the game.

OWL wasnt a thing back then btw

Fair enough, I guess I hate all forms of Competitive Overwatch Tournaments. I detest the influence the top 1% of players have on the game. I think Blizzard should be absolutely ashamed for putting so much weight on the words of the top 1% as it is my opinion that it has ruined the game.

Goats was created in OWL and only used at the highest tiers of play and role queue was added to stop triple tank triple support AKA goats

I see
Altough Im pretty sure that roleQ was also heavily favored in the community so blaming OWL alone for that is kind of… meh

actually it was more around 110 but i wanted to exaggerate my hate for moth mercy.

overwatch league divisions started in june of 2017 and mercy was reworked that same year in september, a major reason that was pushed for was that “hide n rez” wasn’t going to be fun to watch in OWL (even though hide and res had only been around for 2-3 months after mercy got invulnerability frames)

it was half and half, role queue is comparable with “dynamic queue” in league of legends, pick what you want and you get what you want, but you’ll almost always get over the other(s) it just stops the playerbase from learning multiple roles at all, people will end up specialised in one particular role as there is never a reason for them to go tank or healer if they play dps.

league fixed its long queue times with an “autofill” system, where if they were lacking one role, one poor soul was taken off what they wanted and put in support.

i dont think role queue was the right choice when the ratio of tanks:dps and healers:dps was so out of balance, more heroes in a role means more people’s mains in that role.

i could go on about why they do everything to early and balance too late but this is specifically about owl. and role queue was only asked for after goats, and tired support mains.

Nupe. <3

Role Queue was being worked on for well over a year according to the Devs.
GOATs lasted for roughly 6-8 months.

Good try though!

This, that is why I hope the league die and bankrupt these fools

A better MM would have saved the game. Probably should have taken a few hints from Dota in that regard. Hindering players progress and throttling does not help anyone even more so lower ranked players that get subjugated by smurfs even more consistently and often. This while also indirectly causing more skill disparity due to people simply not having the time to grind to their appropriate skill levels end up farming lower tiers with the time at their disposable. But again that is what you get when you throttle progress coz you do not want people to go to their appropriate skill rank right away coz “engagement” most important metric every stock owner just loves to hear. They just love dropping that bomb in the earnings calls for sure, gets their juices flowing real good.

Coz reworks are always so successful, not once did they try to build on top of what was already there. She constantly being a hero to test out new concepts.

Maybe they should not have used 5 ults before killing the mercy? By no means was she OP during this time. Most of the pro matches and ladder statistics sure proved that. Streamers can whine all day about their montages being ruined by resses does not make the facts less true. By no means was she in a need of change, especially considering what other balance changes could have been made at the time instead with the resources.

All in all we could probably have 3-4 more heroes by now without all the reworks left and right which never made any sense beyond “but other developers do it all the time” yes they also all hade 80+ heroes by the time they did it.

It gave us Crunch Time, “McDonald’s take our energy”, Gritty, “SPAM THIS (emoji) TO HELP (team)”, and much other dankness.
