It’s not even because the mythic went to widow, it’s not even because of the theme, it’s not even that the skin is ugly, it’s that they were lazy. Let me explain.
Tier 1: Low quality legendary.
There is no hat
The skin is overall way too plain
Below average for their quality of legendaries
Tier 2: Mediocre legendary
Still lacking detail but an improvement
Barely legendary status
Tier 3: Good legendary skin
This is the level of detail one would expect from a quality legendary
It is not overly basic
Lacks that extra wow factor to make it mythic aside from sound and visual effects.
Tier 4: We finally get a mythic skin
But wait! It’s not customizable. Why would you ever not pick everything in level 4 when it’s objectively cooler than every prior tier? It’s just a skin that can change colors. What happened to every tier having customizable options you’d want to chose from? Previous mythics had things from tier 1 that were worth equipping.
The sound effects and visual effects are cool, but you should have an option to turn off the sound effects. Personally, I don’t like the robotic voice filter on some mythics. This widow mythic has an obnoxious winding up/ticking noise whenever you scope in. I can not play with something distracting like that.
Then when you remember that half the legendaries coming out are recolors, you start to feel like Blizzard is being far too greedy. They are churning out lazy content like those content farms on YouTube to make a quick buck. It’s really disheartening that this game used to release QUALITY skins for FREE and now we have to pay to get mediocrity? The widow mythic could have been a great mythic, but I can’t justify buying it because it’s just not a mythic skin.
What makes me mad is that the color scheme of the skin changes but not the special effects. Orange outfit? Purple effects. Green outfit? Purple effects. Those should be changing with the color of the skin at the very least
Don’t even get me started on the gold aspects. They are such a ripoff. It’s just a $20 recolor. And every other upgrade is 10 prisms. The 20 prisms is just a giant middle finger from Blizzard to their customers.
This is a matter of taste. Personally, I prefer level 1 to all the others aesthetically. Also, from the practical point of view, the hat makes her easier to spot.
Well of course there is someone who likes it. I’m sure someone hates level 4 because they think the fire on the hat looks dumb. The point is that from a design standpoint, it is very plain and boring. The level of detail is just not there. You don’t have multiple hats to chose from. You have 2 hats and one reskinned hat.
If you look at old mythics, say Kiriko’s, I can chose 3 completely different hairstyles that are at the same level of quality. I personally don’t like the grey hair style or the snake headdress, but I can still recognize that they are the same standard of quality. I can chose three different headdresses that, again, are the same level of quality as the others. You personally may like the belt and plain dress, but objectively there is less detail and effort put into it than the other tiers.
Not true. I was crucified for saying the same thing about the Reaper mythic, which has the same issues. 4 armor sets that are just stripped down variations of the final one, 3 jackal headpieces with the same framing, and 0 gun variations. Not to mention that the level one variation doesn’t even qualify as “common tier” quality, let alone legendary tier.
The worst part is that the coolest thing on the skin was completely counter-productive for someone trying not to be seen 90% of the time. Wearing the best looking Tier meant you were setting yourself up to fail. They do not think about how the skins will effect the gameplay of said hero in the slightest when designing these skins.
I just checked the hero gallery and holy cow, why does tier 1 even exist??? it’s just a stripped down version of the mythic. just comparing it to sigma’s, all his tiers are their own individual designs not a downgraded version of the final mythic. really it’s impossible to deny that this company is money-hungry and pulling every trick they can to milk their players of every drip of profit they can with the least amount of effort
I prefer the minimalist approach and the lack of hat is actually a plus as far as I am concerned. And the color choice is the most value we have ever had. You get to select your Hogwarts House. It has never been more meaningful. At the end of the day, you still get the purple bullet trail which makes it an above average legendary.
Honestly, as much as I like her mythic, the fact that the tiered thing was the number 1 complaint for both Reaper and Tracer, it’s baffling that they did it again
I get the idea of “evolving” the skin, but I liked the totally different options that each tier would give instead of the extra bits and bobs that really just incentivize the final tier instead of mix and mash
When it comes to skins and monetization, mediocrity has been the motto since the launch of OW2, and things have continued to get worse instead of better.
But this should not be surprising either. People gave them money when things were bad at launch.
The only logical follow-up is that Blizzard would double down on their “successful” strategy.
and Warframe is still extremely successful despite being one of the most consumer-friendly games on the market. The only real items that need premium currency are cosmetics. And you know what? You can earn the premium currency by PLAYING THE GAME and trading with other players for it – not a trivial amount either. I wish other games would follow in their footsteps
It was a problem with the Reaper one too now that you mention it. But before that most of the skins were solid. Like, Mercy’s released when they started letting you buy individual tiers but each tier was quality. If I recall correctly, Ashe had multiple solid options too. Orisa and Hanzo had bad mythics but it seemed like they started making mythics better again for a little bit there.
