The Reaper Skin Looks Completely Different To The Art

In the art for the short story, the two orbs on his mask are clearly protruding from him similar to a gas mask. This gives off the feeling that he needs this mask in some way to help him breath but in game they are just kind of flat on his mask ingame and look more like a stylistic choice rather than something functional (they actually look silly ingame because of this).

Alongside this his whole outfit appears to be much brighter than his artwork. His artwork looks very much a dark grey/black and yet ingame he is more desert colour. This isn’t just a weird angle for the artwork because in all his sprays that aren’t grim calling he is quite clearly more grey than desert colour.

Ontop of this the meshing on his head has blatantly been downgraded for the ingame skin and it’s not even hidden. There are substantially more cross patters on the hood than in the game and overall it looks way worse because of it.

The meshing issue also extends to the arms because it isn’t remotely as long as it is in the artwork for his arms which is almost down to his elbow but ingame it is barely covering the first 1/4 of his biceps.

Overall it’s a substantial downgrade from the artwork, how come? Were the people who modelled it given super early sketches of it and just told to work on it from that? I know it’s just a skin but given this is the only content we get now and a hero will only get 1 of these most likely shafting the actual thing you see ingame compared to the artwork in such a substantial way is very disappointing. Especially because the artwork looks so good compared to him ingame. (This is all on the highest model/texture settings aswell to ensure that didn’t affect anything).

Lol this is reminding me of the old Hanzo casual skin

It’s just disappointing that this is the biggest bit of content/lore drop we’ve had for like a year and they couldn’t even be bothered to get the skin to atleast look close to the artwork.

Yeah the skin definitely looks much better in the artworks.

I pointed this out on the Twitter post as well. Would have looked way better if the gas mask circles were bigger and more protruding to give the white section of the mask the same shape as the art on the cover of the short story:

It could just be some of the shading in the artwork making it more stylized than being under the in game lighting (with multiple light sources) where everything has to be defined a certain way.

Do agree on the mask seeming a bit off. It’s like a weird middle ground between a gas mask and a sort of hockey mask. Where the artwork leans more into the gas mask look, the in game model leans towards a hockey mask.

I thought this too but it’s not consistent with the rest of the artwork. For example, the one where he is with Sombra, Sombras colours are very clearly defined and they appear as they do in game. Yet Reapers looks nothing alike.
But it still doesn’t explain why the model itself received so many downgrades. The colour looks worse but not terrible, the model on the otherhand is just an L compared to the amazing artwork.

Nope. That would be when they renamed McCree and we got that skin event (and I believe we were supposed to be the Deathmatch map, but everything got messed up and they delayed the comic, or whatever). This one is like, the second biggest. And technically the only other one if I recall.

I’d say the content drop was bigger for this since it’s a legendary VS a reskinned Epic but I’ll give you the lore since we got 6 or so comics out of it.

My biggest issue is the mask.
It looks very well detailed on the short story cover.
The you can immediately tell, that it is a gasmask.
Ingame? Not so much…

Yeah the in-game was pretty lacking, and the color choice was hideous… and not even unique music, they cheaped out on this one…

Agree’d, the mask is the most iconic bit of the character and here it just looks bad. Even if it wasn’t compared to the amazing artwork.

hm i actually like the ingame version better than the comic

This is just a limitation on the engine and/or model.
It’s the same issue of Widow’s Cote D’Azur skin having glasses on the forehead rather than on the hair. The model just doesn’t allow it.
They would need to redesign the whole model in order to make it look the same as the artwork.

If you pay close attention, you can find a lot of similar details in various heroes’ skins.

I’m going off the cover image where the circles on the mask have a red glow while in game they are orange. However the cover image does have splashes of red coming from the sides so it could be just how he was lit and not how his mask looks.

Ashe’s deadlock hair is one that comes to mind.
