The problem with Role Lock

It makes the game more toxic. Yes, before there was a lot of toxicity about team composition, but, you could always take the role you think your team needed, and stop complaining.

As before your teammates were glad that they were getting healed, because you made the “altruistic” choice of picking a support and bestowed your blessing unto him, now they complain you’re not healing enough, even tho you did nothing else but healing up that point.

I also fall for the same mentality when DPS on my team can’t kill anything, there’s so much you can heal before your team start to get killed.

Without role lock, you could change from role to role to suite the team needs, now your expected to perform.

It not only makes the game more toxic, but also more rigid. The mindset of a team based shooter game has transformed into a MMORPG, where healers are supposed to keep tanks and DPS alive. It’s outrageous to play as support healing your your teammates on terrible position, see them get killed and be blamed for it.

It’s time for role lock to go, for good. Keep a arcade more with it, and also/ maybe on E-sports only.

I completely disagree with the premise of your argument here.

First, I actually have found the opposite to be true. Toxicity exists regardless. It’s been in the game for ages both before and after role lock. But IMO the game was actually more toxic before role lock.

Also, why? None of your arguments would be strong enough to remove the most popular mode of the game. You have open queue. It exists in both unranked and ranked. It’s just less popular. You can play it if you want. Why would you need to remove role lock when you have open queue right there if you want to? You add nothing and only take away player choice to choose to play role lock.

It’s a bad argument.

We’d still blame the player who gave up their role. We need scapegoats.

My two cents.

  • RQ should be comp only.
  • 5v5 RQ-QP should be moved to comp as a practice mode.
  • Open Queue should be the default mode for QP.

It’s fine how it is now, but this is what should have happened when they introduced RQ. This format would keep the casuals and the try hards separate as God intended.

It is probably about the same regardless of role queue or not. The difference is what form does the toxicity take. I actually agree with homeboy, I prefer open queue toxicity.

“Waah waah, our tank sucks!” Okay, then you play it! That’s shuts them up real fast and saves me the acetaminophen.

I am not sure why it was worse before role queue because that version of toxicity never phased me at all.

That’s not a problem of Role Lock… that’s a problem with people playing the game

Exactly! Same with matchmaking to be perfectly honest. The algorithm is just applying it’s parameters. The people are what make the experience so miserable.

Toxicity is about the same. You can’t combat human nature.

Let them complain. You’re doing what you can with the team you have. Healing is a two way street. They need to actually allow you to heal as well - by shaking off flankers, retreating when necessary and timing abilities. You can’t outheal bad habits.

Well, there you go lol. You’re an addition to that problem.

“Team-based” is very vague. Every “team-based” game is simply “what can you do to support your best player become better”. Overwatch is no exception.

Open Queue exists. Just play that.

This is what fundamentally killed Overwatch. No thanks. We don’t need them to pander to that scene anymore than they already do.

This is what I can agree with especially with the Comp setting, It is okay to have open queue for quickplay and role queue there as well, but Comp STRICTLY 6v6(and yes 5v5) needs to be RQ. no one needs 3 supps 2dps and 1Tank(or worse 3dps 2Tanks and 1Supp) vs their working functional structured 2-2-2 composition, 5v5 is a powerhouse sim for the tanks it can stay, but tanks and supports need vital tweaking to make it function properly, one last solution would be to limit the heal reduction to 6v6 but to compensate boosting some healing outputs for like zen before his perks that way it doesn’t force one specific perk over the other to like heal your target while you do damage. it is a nice perk don’t get me wrong, but that kind of healing for him should’ve existed in the first place. but that’s aside from the point, it’s more so the exhaustion of seeing QP meme compositions in competitive play opposite of seeing them in the streamlined semi-casual mode as QP.

Role lock created a different game altogether.

The game now is:
Tank vs Tank
DPS vs DPS
Supports vs Supports

You’re no longer incentivize to work as a team, instead you just need to be better than your enemies’ same role. If your a DPS, you just have to be get more picks, period.
The team with DPS with more picks win, that’s all.

Supports now are about outhealing and out-DPSing enemies supports.

Tanks are about staying alive longer than the enemy tank.

The problem with OQ is that there are players who enjoy it and are able to play it in both unranked and ranked formats, but still have the toxic tendencies of downplaying the RQ formats out of nowhere and for no reason. It’s time for the right of these players to speak to go, for good. Them having takes about the superior RQ formats just out of spite and them wanting to move all the players from that format to their OQ formats against their will. It’s just bad behavior
