Brigitte clearly wasn’t designed to be a tertiary support. However, the high rank players and pros decided to try to change the fundamentals of the game and created GOATs. Which was so against the developers design concept that they had to completely overhaul the rules of the game and force 2-2-2.
Sigma was clearly designed to be a main barrier tank paired with an off tank. However, once again the high rank players and pros decided to change the precedent of the game and run double barrier main tank. Now we’re in a barrier meta, that’s enforced by 2-2-2 instead of disincentivized.
Moral of the story. Everyone who plays this game understands how it’s meant to be played and how the developers balance it. But they keep breaking the precedents and creating awful unpopular metas that were never intended to exist. The developers struggle to balance Overwatch so much because of the playerbase not because of a flawed game design.
At this point, they’ll have to role lock Tank into off-Tank and main-Tank because we need them to tie down our hands down to play the game the way it’s meant to be played.
It’s not just the pros. It’s basically people that want to stand behind sheilds all day because they don’t think dying is “fun”, when dying and killing is a huge part of this game.
Same people who created comps like goats and double shield are the non-fps/moba players wanting to turn an action fps shorter into a boring slog moba game.
Same people that whine and complain all day about nerfing DPS heroes, even DPS heroes are the least impactful class in the game.
please tell me how implementing 2-2-2 and having Reaper, a triple quad tank comps counter hero (that inb4 now 100% counters 2 enemies out of 6), not nerfed or reworked is not flawed game design.
I actually hope for something like this, removing double shield menta without nerfing Sigma and Orisa individually, while at the same time removing the possibility to lose games because “no main tank in the game”.
This or hero bans (Doom 100% ban rate btw).
GOATS like comps (i.e. tank and support stacking) became remarkably prevalent in mystery heroes in the months prior to its use in pro play. If some type of comp is becoming unusually effective by random chance you can bet that a refined version of it will be even more effective in coordinated play. This one is purely on Blizzard for not taking that into account.

In essence it comes purely down to the basic behavioral principle of ‘taking the route of least resistance’ or in other words: maxing out the benefits for the least possible effort. People will always do that, hell, any living organism will always do that. Thank natural selection for that.
It’s up to the devs for making sure that this ‘route of least resistance’ is not a terribly boring thing. After all, what is the easiest route is determined by the tools that the devs give to the players.
If I give you a hammer to build a birdhouse and you decide to kill a bird with it instead, are you responsible for your actions or is it my fault for giving you the tool?
That’s because Snipers are still not nerfed after 1 year, and Doom Reaper Mei Bastion running rampant. That’s why people are running double shield meta Sigma Orisa, they don’t have much of a choice do they?
Devs simply forgot to revert all the DPS antiGOATs buffs & all the Dva Zarya Lucio nerfs + reworking or nerfing Reaper before releasing 2-2-2, and this is why we are in this situation.
Players utilize whatever devs give them.
It is completely devs short vision and fault. It doesnt take much to fix all the cancer devs gave us, yet it will require to revert some of their decisions which they dont like to do.
The problem isn’t that people WANT to run double barrier, or stand behind shields, run 3 healers and all that. It’s because they have to. Almost every meta in the game was really focused on one thing, preventing snipers from dominating the game.
Dive, Shields, Goats all there to try and prevent the instant gib death that is so easy in the game. Every meta basically tried to stop Widow and/or Hanzo from utterly destroying the game.
How can you blame the player base from wanting to play the best comps? Sure blizz might not have intended them, but people playing a competitive game, especially for money in pro play, are going to play whatever is best. Plus people have asked for a role que / role lock for literally 3 years at this point, dont think goats is the whole reason to blame.
I think you misunderstand game design. There’s a concept called ‘dominant strategy’ which people who are being paid to play the game will always do. Competitive players want to ruin your experience to get paid. It’s not their fault they were given the tools to create these problems which is why more restrictions are necessary.
It’s the same with speedrunning you can say how you think the game is meant to be played but people are going to play the way that is most enjoyable or profitable to them.
The gaming community is tragic when you take a step back and look at what it can do. So many things only need rebalancing because someone out there found a crazy trick or method of optimizing their playstyle and it goes against the vision and wishes of the developers. But nobody cares about maintaining some kind of integrity so long as it wins, and when it wins everyone wants to win so they mimic then you get stuck with GOATS and Double Shield meta.
I won’t say Overwatch was ever a perfectly balanced game, or does a great job of continuing to balance it, but given the way game is played like a MOBA and not just an FPS it combines strategic ability usage and a highly competitive group of gamers. LoL has a competitive scene but it’s nothing like the competitive FPS community. Overwatch didn’t know who to cater to, casual or competitive, FPS or MOBA, so they sided with money and did everything for eSports pros. It’s very easy to take advantage of that and make the game feel awful to play for everyone else
If that’s true, balance the game so that snipers/one shots have no counterplay.
Use the data from the mess it creates (if there’s a mess). And re-balance the problem heroes to not have one-shots anymore while still being viable just in different ways.
Face the issue head on and don’t ignore it. I’d rather have snipers be ultra overpowered for a month and then get permanently reworked than all these weird metas that are “only designed to counter one shots”
Idk much about paladins, but battleborn was actually a moba fps game. Had creeps, and lanes, and everything. People calling OW a moba makes no sense in any way.
You are going to die in this game. Deal with it.
You’re not meant to be immortal and not die. Stop trying to find broken ways to try to stay alive longer than you should.
Like I said in a previous post dying and killing is a huge part of this game and it’s not something you can just do away with or try to eliminate all together.
Time to kill in this game is long compared to other games. And people are still crying about dying quickly. Jesus.
just because Overwatch was your first FPS or came from games that were non FPS like Minecraft , Roblox, dota or whatever doesn’t mean you have to try to ruin this game.
Casual players and non-pro players of all sorts have been demanding 2-2-2 for a long time. Even in-game they’d beg for 222 if you were running more than 2 DPS.
So your claim is invalid right from the get go.
A brief search on the forums would show TONS of regular players who aren’t high rank or pro begging for it.
