Title says it all, I mean who came up with that idea? You’re ruining OWL even more like it had a lot of viewers already.
OWL 4 facebook gaming?
To quote based on Emongg: Twitch streamers have a much nicer experience, not competing with OWL replays.
That and probably money. Youtube’s a dying platform for creators so they need to buy up some big methods of cash flow.
Yeah Soon
I guess so
Yeah, sure Dan
For creators at least, my bad.
Sure Dan
… you gotta source for that?
I’m sure they just did it on a whim because the business people are stupid at business things. I hope they see this post and change their ways. The forums knows business about as well as it knows game balance.
Theory, but I doubt there will be much evidence to counter my statement.
Coppa, bad Youtube TOS, random and abusable copyright strikes, pondering towards clickbait creators, mature content filters, children’s content filters, the previous, and somewhat current adpocalypse…
It’s not as if youtube is short of faults.
It’s a lot easier for content creators to have videos demonetized for innocuous things. There was also that fairly recent thing where Markiplier’s streaming a let’s play and encouraging fan reactions got hundreds of viewers of that one stream banned for bot spam, with appeals to this process being rejected outright in most instances. It gets worse with every TOS update. I’d provide sources but I’m not at a trust level to post links, but a simple google search brings up tons of articles on the subject.
You have it backward… The onus is on you to provide evidence to support your statement.
Also there’s been bs with YouTube since day 1 (well, maybe not day 1…). The main issue is that there’s no competition that provides enough revenue to be viable. I believe the GameGrumps and/or their affiliates uploaded some uncensored videos for games with nudity to PornHub and they commented that the money they made was bad relative to YouTube (not just volume of viewers).
I didn’t see your reply to later but I think the reply to the other guy covers most of it. The main issue being competition.
There’s a trick to copying in links if you don’t have the required trust level, but I don’t know it ![]()
You can link it but just delete the first ‘h’ though which is what I usually do.
That makes sense - it’ll make it a lot easier to hide decline in viewership.
Well there is healthy competition, always has been. I’m guessing there’s thousands of Youtubers existing within the 100k category, whilst a good number go above 1 million. I’d have to get the exact numbers, but it’s not hard to find personally.
You are right in that there is competition, but it is very much genre based. In gaming there’s plenty of rivalry. Dozens of different channels for CSGO, OW, Mortal Kombat, Destiny, etc etc, all earning money for YT. But what I’m now suggesting is that this competition is PUNISHED because of the TOS and various updates added. Kids gaming channels for example with the COPPA update.
Seen any lately? I’ve not seen a single kids entertainment channel pop up at all, neither for myself or people I work alongside.
So what’s being hurt more? The competition within the genres of Youtube, or the genres themselves?
For streaming yes (Mixer, YT and Twitch), but for videocontent their is no alternative out their
Oh when I say competition I mean with YouTube, rather than within. What other VOD sharing sites rival YouTube?
Don’t get me wrong, while I don’t follow the tos of YouTube that closely I’m sure I agree with you. I don’t remember what COPPA was, but I remember something happening with kid focused channels that I thought was stupid.
Part of the issue is YouTube is that American (and the rest of the world for that matter) law hasn’t kept up with technology. I’m guessing that it’s currently cheaper to just bend over for X company rather than deal with costly legal battles over a single persons content rather than just shutdown an individual persons channel. This is why many smaller YouTubers were in affiliate networks as it functioned like a type of insurance in the way YouTube treats individuals versus conglomerates and any sort of legal battles that may come up.
As YouTubers don’t work for google and there’s no sort of union, the only leverage people have is to go elsewhere. Unfortunately, there’s no elsewhere to go to currently that is profitable enough to live off =\
Yeah my apologies, I was told I misread the topic. You are correct though, there isn’t really any video platform that COMPETES with Youtube. Twitch I guess is YTS’ competition for streaming, but as Skund above rightly said, nothing for videos.
COPPA was focused on removing targeted advertisements from kids channels, which resulted in pretty much EVERY child-based channel vanishing from thin air. I’ve seen dozens of channels lose lots of money and have to set up Patreons as a result.
Yeah that was kind of the point of my responses. Youtube would rather take the phat paycheck of income from corporate based Overwatch, which has a slim to no chance of broadcasting controversy or anything against TOS… over a creator that pours their heart and soul into something.
It’s why a lot of youtubers are going twitch only for a chance at getting revenue. The most notable being CallMeCarson. His content is ENTIRELY Twitch based, with a small amount of revenue coming from his live channel, where he just uploads his edited VODS.
I reckon this’ll be a continuing trend in the near future too, especially with the corporation focus of Youtube.
Ah that’s right! I remember some YouTubers being sorta vulgar an such cos although they would take a hit due to their content “not being for everyone” but they wanted to make sure it couldn’t be for kids XD what a world we live in!
On the surface it sounds good but there’s already a tremendous number of ads directed at kids on tv that occur during kids programs, cartoons are made to sell toys, etcetcetc. Actually, I’m not in America so might be wrong, does COPPA also target ads played during cartoons etc?
But yeh, just like that a whole of people’s jobs are just washed away without warning or recompense… ![]()
Yeh it’s a shame that there’s no protections for them or some such. Unfortunately google/alphabet is too big to really compete with anymore =\
I hope so. Perhaps a conglomerate of the top youtubers could combine to form their own thing for the good of us all…
If only Youtube could crash sooner.
I like to watch OWL
I am just one voice among many.
