Hi gamers, and game developers. I am sure we all know that there is a new game in town called Marvel Rivals. And it’s been doing great, for many reasons. But one reason that Rivals is doing so well is because it doesn’t have a scoreboard that puts all of these numbers out there for your team to look and and blame each other for.
We all know of the people who like to press tab in the middle of a game and start blaming their Sombra/Widow for “throwing” when they have less damage than them but have a lot of kills. But most people who understand the game know very well that those two characters aren’t Damage-based heroes and get a lot of kills. Marvel Rivals has made this less of an issue by removing the widely seen Damage and Healing numbers in the game, and instead, you get to see the full scoreboard with everything after the game is over.
Generally speaking, for a team-based game, this is a much better approach. Most people who look at the scoreboard in order to bring more value to the team look primarily at the Elims and Deaths. This helps you find who is struggling the most in your game, and who is popping off. And your team can adjust accordingly to make the game more in your favor.
However, I do like seeing numbers while in the match, but primarily to compare the teams to each other in that fact. The moments where it’s most helpful is when your team is repeatedly dying and you are a support so you can check and see what your healing numbers are and if the enemy has a lot more healing, then you can switch to a healer with more healing or more utility in order to keep your team up. But this can still be done without singling people out by making it a combined stat across each team. This way you can still compare the stats to the other team, but you also won’t have a teammate flaming you because you’re playing a support hero like Zen or Lucio who can have a lot of healing but isn’t always the highest healing output.
So I think if we had a combined Damage stat across all 5 players, this would work a lot better, and you still see Elims, Assists, and deaths. And then a combined healing stat between only the two healers and then your tank’s Mitigated damage and healing are only something they can see on their own menu. This will allow the players to be able to adjust on their own instead of having people nitpick the numbers on the scoreboard and tell each person on their team who and how they should play.
Admittedly, I’m sure this will upset a lot of players, but what doesn’t upset people in the Overwatch Community? Even when the game is balanced and the majority of people agree that it is it’s controversial to say that it is. But, as far as I’m concerned with this specific change, you’ll be ensuring more team play and this will make a positive change in the environment of Overwatch 2 making the game gain a little more traction and making balancing easier for people to understand because they won’t be so hard focused on stats the whole time.
Obviously this change isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight. But I hope it’s sooner than later. Because I’m not enjoying Overwatch in the state that it’s in, and a big part of that is the community’s reaction to stats on the scoreboard in-game. I honestly enjoy a lot of mechanics in Overwatch a lot more than Rivals and have more desire to play Overwatch. But because of every other game being a battle to get your team to cooperate because they are all whining in chat about the scoreboard, I think I’m just going to play Rivals instead. Even though I don’t think Rivals is as fun in Comp right now because of the FPS Animation bug along with it feeling clunkier than Overwatch. I have a good computer so I don’t have slower animations, but it just feels wrong to boost your account in Rivals while there is a bug like that. But I don’t see any other choice when Overwatch has birthed a community of players who just look at numbers on a scoreboard and think bigger numbers are better 89% of the time.
