The Only Solution

Put both 5v5 and 6v6 in the game. Have separate balances for each format. Mostly just adjust the hp pools for the tanks in 6v6. This has already been done in the arcade rulesets and I don’t think a ton more 6v6 specific balance is needed beyond this.

Another concern is how do you do this without affecting one or the other? Very simple.

Open queue, replace that with 6v6 and instead of going back to having role queue like it was in Overwatch 1 limit each role to 2 max on a team and let it be first come, first serve.

Or…just go back to role queue like it was. If people want the tradeoff of higher queue times to play DPS in 6v6 they will queue up for that if they want it bad enough. I’m sure many people in the community will gladly accept that tradeoff.

I think role queue in its current form is fine for 5v5 given it fits the balance of players better. No changes are needed.

Instead of forcing people to play one or the other just let them play what they want. I’m sure everyone can agree on this.

All of the polling done so far says the community is almost equally divided between 5v5 and 6v6. Staying one way or reverting to the other is going to make a large portion of the community unhappy.

So just do both.

What would happen (to 5v5 queue times) if no tanks want to queue for 5v5 and instead mostly queue for 6v6?

But I actually agree with you they should add it back.

not trying to be pessimistic, but ngl… they struggle balancing one format, I don’t think I’d trust them with 2 simultaneously.

I guess they’d have to figure it out, how to make being a total raid boss of a solo tank viable or something…

At the absolute worst do what I said.

Limit each role to 2 max and first come first serve in the character select screen.

But I dont think it would be an issue at all.

  1. Polls show the community is almost evenly split. There’s plenty of players for each.

  2. The proportions of players are going to respond to queue times. If somebody doesn’t really have a strong preference they may just pick the one with the faster queues.

I think queues will be a little high for the dps role at higher elos in 6v6 but overall won’t be that big of a deal.

Are they split evenly by role, though? What if the 50% of players that like 5v5 are almost all DPS players? Their queues would skyrocket…

Guess that’s true, but I also wouldn’t want salty DPS who prefer 5v5 in my 6v6 games just because they can’t play their preferred format (thus possibly ruining mine).

It’s almost as if they should’ve buffed tanks appropriately from the start of 5v5…

The devs are gonna have to walk and chew gum at the same time to make this work.

You are never going to get a perfect scenario with zero tradeoffs involved no matter how you handle the queues whether you do full out open queue, role queue as it is now, or the type of 2/2/2 or 1/2/2 pick system I’m talking about.

They can’t even balance ONE format and keep half of its roster at a time in the dumpster XD Can you imagine them trying TWO different formats???
