The new leaver penalty is way too harsh

Currently, the new leaver penalty will suspend you from pretty much all modes besides custom games and the practice range. Yes, this includes solo modes like going against AI bots, hero mastery courses, and the PAID content such as the PVE missions too.

Sorry, not sorry, but leaving a casual mode advertised as “quick” games absolutely does not deserve such a harsh and unforgiving penalty. I NEVER leave games but I had a recent spat where things have suddenly come up in the middle of a game and I had to leave. This amounted to just about 4 games total which is apparently enough to suspend you from playing any game mode entirely.

It actually killed my mood to play Overwatch for the rest of the day because I usually play Quick Play when I don’t want to commit to a competitive environment. What happens if I have to go do something again? I’m gonna get hit with a 4 hour suspension.

It’s insane.

Leavers are lame but being locked out of hero mastery? Silly

in Valorant you can be banned for weeks or even perma’d for leaving unrated games, this isnt as bad as you think

if you are having to leave suddenly this often maybe dont play a competitive shooter that day

I wouldn’t care about the leaver penalty if backfilling didn’t penalize you too. Like why would I WANT to backfill a game? It should give you 25 of those PW1 credits in the first place.

There is also a vote surrender option in Valorant and unranked matches are longer than the typical QP OW match. You are under the threat of suspension for wanting to leave OW matches if you are getting constant backfills where you are just getting stomped, you can do nothing about it other than wait until the match ends at that point because there is no vote leave system in place.

Or maybe don’t make such a harsh leaver penalty for such a casual mode? Is this not why we have a ranked mode? People have lives and at the end of the day, leaving 4 games is fine to warrant a 10 minute penalty and that should be the max amount of time. 20 minutes is far too long.

It is also not like people want to leave games either due to parents, wifi problems, power issues, emergencies, etc. I think the 20 minute/4 hour suspension is completely unnecessary considering these factors. It needs to be toned down and readdressed, potentially adding in a vote surrender option, I think that would save a lot of frustrations when it comes to feeling stuck in the endless leaver cycle.

The penalties aren’t harsh enough. First one should be 4h from every single form of playing and the second one a week. That would make them think twice before being serial quitter.

I play QP in the evening after a day at work. Sometimes I have to interrupt the game for a short time.
I wouldn’t play a competitive shooter on those days.
Overwatch is not a competitive shooter, no matter how hard they try to make it look like one.

What they are doing right now is choosing the worst options from both sides.
Taking the penalties from a competitive game and offering a quickplay experience, in terms of anticheat, balancing, servers and matchmaking.
Great idea!

And the best thing is, if it turns out that it was a bad decision to introduce these penalties in the first place, no one will know about it if they reverse them.

Why though? If you have other things to do or other things going on, then don’t play a PvP team based game. Play a single player game. Or play FFA where your “interruption” doesn’t affect your whole team.

It worked for 6 years and the matches were much better back then.
Players leaving QP was never the real problem.
I don’t really like the FFA or DM modes in Overwatch.
I will probably stop playing, like many other players.

finish the match and you have a guaranteed non backfill your next que, Valorant has absolute stomps that still take longer than OW matches, and good luck getting unrated players to vote for a surrender, you’ll live

we did for a while, and there were leavers every game.

if you have any of these issues for 4/20 matches, you can tank the 20 minute, if you keep having those issues longer and dont consider just not playing for a little bit, you kinda deserve the 4 hour. you having to leave doesnt mean everyone else just gets to tank a 4v5 because you cant not play for a bit until issues are solved

sure, although besides payload and maybe flashpoint why would you need this option, OW games arent that long, also just gonna get the “oh vote failed? im going to throw now :)” people like Val has

It is easy enough to bypass the leaver ban by playing on a different account. If Blizzard really wanted to stick it to leavers, their PC or console hardware would be target banned, not just one player account.

that has the edge case of “me and my sibling or partner share hardware for OW on diff accounts, now im banned because of them” situation, no real winning move

I’ve always wondered if any online games use MAC address blacklisting?

So in other words, despite the warning from Blizzard every time you go to leave a game, you decided to not just leave one, but FOUR and still think you can cry about it despite being warned of the consequences every single time?

There is a reason leaving 1 or 2 games doesn’t punish you, and that’s because things happen and sometimes the best thing to do is leave the game. But anymore than that within a short time period is on you, so take the punishment.

There are fingerprints of your installation in the registry.
The game is running completely with user-mode privileges, it’s not worth doing any serious blacklisting, because it’s too easy to manipulate.

I’m not saying that hardware banning should be done, but it is certainly another option if the leaver situation does not improve or gets worse.

leavers are clearing up luckily, as much as the forums complain people only leave about 1 in every 10 games i play now

(queue the crying game)

I just love all these complain threads of serial leavers. You can leave 3 out of 20 games. If you feel like you need to leave more than you probably deserve the penalty and should maybe find another game.
