The Importance of Being "Jesse McCree"

Disclaimer: I had already opened a similar topit but it was closed because as usual some people don’t know how to use inappropriate terms :expressionless: if possible, let’s keep the conversation going civilly even when it shows disappointment, thanks.

It’s been a while now, and here are the effects of the August Blizzard scandal on OW:

  • a postponed narrative arc for McCree, and according to Master Ian Gamer, this could relate to Malevento’s poor reception and some censorship that occurred in the map that maybe had to include a story about mccree.
    https://youtu.be/8QyVA1NMj-g
  • editorially, in the rest of the world there is no news of the publication of the book Deadlock Rebels. usually after the US publication you had some info, but for example I (an Italian) asking for info to the Italian editor of Hero of Numbani I was told that there is no info about the Ashe book. Could it be about a conversion of the McCree name in translations?
  • the artbook “the art of overwatch vol 2” was supposed to be released on october 15th, but has been postponed until November 30th. again, is it about a change on the term “Jesse McCree” in the pages?
  • the latest November patch eliminated all pre-match hero conversations that mention “mcCree”. good user Doctor Six confirmed to me that they left an interaction with torb on the arm that says “mccree”, but I fear that if they know they have forgotten to delete it: I have personally investigated to extract the internal files, and also all the vocal lines of reyes, moira and genji in retribution saying “jesse” and “mccree” have been eliminated, and they are definitely not excludable lines of dialogue. this makes it clear that the cutting of the name in the game is now close;

now, by combining all these points “randomly” they converge on the possible change of the name McCree, which we will hypothetically see in November. pretty confirmed that there won’t be a gimmick that includes “McCree” under any circumstances (in the current build, sombra’s “joel” interaction has also been eliminated, and even HAL-fred glitchbot’s curse that he deemed mccree unsuitable as cowboy name).
a small reminder: short films and comics will not undergo this remake, but will be left alone (logistically, because it is difficult to respect in-game content and future editorial productions)

but that’s why I mentioned Oscar Wilde’s comedy (The Importance of Being Earnest, but calling it “McCree”): will this price be worth it in the end? I mean, ok I understand the whys, and the whats, but … doesn’t that help make Ow stop? Already the perception of big updates for OW “2” doesn’t help the enthusiasm, but seeing so many departments stuck for one name how much are the development trends influencing? or in any case, the actual work plan of the devs that has never been so upset, as far as I remember.

and here we are: if the weight of the new name is already present, when will it arrive, how do you think the situation will evolve? obviously I would be very curious to have an opinion of those who agree with the choice of the devs, do not be afraid  but let’s keep the civil tones.

It McChanges nothing for me. I always call him Deathslinger or Erron Black now anyways. Out of respect for Cowboys that got nerfed into the ground.

I still miss the Orisa dialogue.

I think they will revert to Joel McCloud and maybe we will get the story arc between Halloween and WW

Im okay with the name change. Imagine the workers when the devs/designers say: “Okay, now we need to think about what we could do with Jesse McCree”. That wouldn’t have been the best experience the workers could have experienced in their lives. Especially if they’ve met IRLCree personally before

His name will always be McCree for me but other than that, I don’t see the point of this thread. There already have been numerous threads and opinions about it.

Yeah, I also find it hard to get his name out of my head.
I am calling him McCree since almost 6 years now.
And I think the name sounds good.

I also find it hard to get the name McCree out of my head, the name just sounds so cool and it sucks that it’s associated with such a horrible person. But I can totally understand why it should be removed. I’ve never been sexually harasser/assaulted but I’m sure I would boycott a game that had the exact name of my harasser

Yeah I like how he spent a whole video on something Blizz literally said they were doing in regards to lore. It should come as no surprise since Blizz said they were doing this that it’s going to push everything back now.

It was dumb to name a character after an employee, but a witch-hunt on a name after an issue now is equally dumb.

Functioning adults should be able to parse their feelings between a video game character and a real person. Encouraging all this navel-gazing on a name is just a bad direction to go in, in the long run.

The change was one that the developers & company felt necessary to do, not so much for the playerbase, but for themselves.

I’m sure there are those on the dev team (& across Blizzard’s other teams) that don’t feel comfortable working on a character named after a less than desired individual, the company as a whole also needs to show the world that they’re trying to do something to address their issues, even if it’s something very trivial like this.

Getting this out the way now is better than just kicking the can down the road, even if it messes up their current schedules.

As for the name change, why not give him no name at all? Go full Clint Eastwood with him,

Couldn’t they change his name to “Jess E. McRae”? which wouldn’t change any spoken dialogue but it would be a different name.

Again, functioning mature adults should be able to parse their feelings for a video game character apart from a real person.

Not really, this is just the kind of symbolic nonsense that actually keeps real changes from occurring.

Just because something is perceived as “good” in some sense does not make it wise overall. All they did in this was draw attention to the person for the community, when 99% of the players had absolutely no idea there was someone at Blizzard they lifted the name from. In short, you are not going to make any dent in the problem of sexual harrassment (and mind you, literally all we know is the real McCree was fired, no reason why given) by renaming a video game character. For all we know, they go through all this and McCree is actually exonerated… wouldn’t that be something. What’s sad is how many people here just jumped on the bandwagon without even any facts to go on but mostly conjecture and guilt by association.

Thats a big maybe and just a rumor. It was his production name before IRLCree signed a contract. I honestly don’t know what would be a good new name for him

I hope not McCloud.
If they name him McCloud I will always think of Fox McCloud from Starfox.

McRae is pronounced significantly different from McCree. Mick-ray vs Mick-REEEE. So you would have to change something to do that.

Source: Live near a college half named after a person with that last name and a couple other geographical features with that as the name. No one pronounces it like McCree.

i just call him right click now lol

People have mentioned such repeatedly but 1st name change solves everything w/o alienating the player base. JAKE MCCREE aint really an issue. JAKE JOHNSON would be idiotic.

That or just make MCCREE an old Iconic name like “KID” and be done w/ it

I dont agree w/ the name change but if it MUST be done then do such w/ a brush rather than a hammer

If they eliminate all McCree mentions then we are gonna lose the best interaction ever during Retribution:

Moira: McCree… we need to discuss your “italian accent”
McCree: I watched a bunch of spaggetti westerns, thought I did just fine! “bOnE a SeRa SiGnOrE, cAn I a GeT cHu A sOmEtHiNg To DrInK?”
Moira: Please never do that again…

We can’t lose that! And knowing Moira’s va is the least involved in OW (seriously, they had to reuse her laugh for the Boo! emote because I guess there is a lack of material) the chance that it might be eliminated entirely its frightening

Oh and yeah its a pretty dumb change, I don’t see anything of worth eliminating it. Hitler was a ruthless guy but some people are still called Adolfo and such it’s a matter or separating the individual from the name, tho I will admit having the VA support this decision out of his (presumably) own free will it’s something I gotta respect

It’s a huge waste of money and time to no real benefit. You can’t tell me people so hurt by the actions of a guy will suddenly not feel anything because of a name change. The face is the same, the character is the same, even the voice is the same I believe…

I gotta be honest I kind of feel it’s just another excuse to use as to why Blizzard is delaying more content. Remember lack of updates was at first setting up the Overwatch League, and then their focus on game balance and bug fixes… then it became OW 2. Then it was covid, now it’s reworking Mcree’s name.

Simply put at some point you just gotta shrug and say “whats next”.

Lets just call him McSkill and be done with it.
