The game asks me to update my BIOS

Recently when I start the game it opens a window that says:

Overwatch has detected your computer is using an Intel 13th or 14th generation processor that does not have the proper updates installed to address potential processor instability issues. It is highly recommended to update the BIOS on your motherboard to the latest version with Intel’s microcode 0x12B or later.
CPU Name: Intel(R) Core™ i7-14700K

Then the game starts. How important is that and what causes it?
I’m using Steam BTW.

updating the bios is super important the microcode update will prevent premature damage to your cpu and motherboard and that bios build is over a year old the current version of microcode ends in 12F

This was an Intel manufacturing fault that is affecting pretty much all 13th and 14th gen processors.
The fault has led to increased voltages being sent through the CPU, leading to crashes. When Intel investigated the fault, they discovered this was actually damaging the CPU, shortening the lifespan of the processor.

The microcode MIGHT alleviate the issue and prevent further damage.

For me, it might be ‘new pc time.’ Following the update some users have complained of poorer performance, and overheating issues (which also destroys the CPU.) Not sure I could in good conscience tinker about with the BIOS and be certain I’m not going to break something.

This is an extremely important BIOS update for you. Those processors have a problem with their microcode that can result in permanent damage to the processor. The BIOS update is an attempt to prevent any further damage beyond what might have already occurred. You want to do it ASAP!

I saw a discussieon about this and appearantly Blizz has problems with their shaders and playing the game can fry your CPU even if it runs without problem.

Yeah but thats wrong and spreading misinformation, this whole 13 and 14 gen cpu problems are entirely on intel

hi! did u mange to fix it? I have the same issue and my motherboard is updated and im still getting the same issues/pop up everytime I open the game and it crashes within 10minutes of a game. I have a PRO Z690-A WIFI (MS-7D25)

Yeah, it stopped showing up after updating my BIOS. I don’t know how to fix your problem but hopefully they can help you too.
