The direction of Overwatch

Just a simple question for the players here.

Do you find the direction of this game positive or negative? Please state your reaspns as well.

For me its improved a little but theres this growing sort of decline inkling in the back of my head everytime I play. I also know better than to punch myself in the gut for denying such a sensatoon but it seems to always be there. Break or no break.

So right now for me its undecisive. Wjat about for you.

The majority is likely to say the direction is negative.
Myself included.

I feel uneasy about the way it’s been going. I got into this game when the open beta weekends just before launch started, and the game felt fresh and a nice shakeup of what I’d considered a very stale FPS genre. I used to play a ton of FPS, but I stopped around ten years ago, after the culture surrounding them became more toxic and about showing off.

The past year or so, starting from when Mercy was reworked to a more ā€œdps-acceptableā€ version after a sustained harassment campaign by certain pros and streamers, has seen the game sadly move more and more towards that same old toxic FPS attitude, as the devs have conceded time and again, and toned down supports and tanks. At this point it does feel like a lot of the fun has gone out, especially with Activision-Blizzard’s focus on direct monetization of eSports surrounding their titles.

A year and a half ago I was excited about the notion of watching Overwatch tournaments, because of the way I’d seen the game draw in so many people who usually didn’t touch FPS games, and I thought that would be how we moved forward. Instead, we seem to have regressed with the game being re-tooled to fit the FPS eSports mold, instead of trying to change it and be more inclusive and inviting. It’s why OWL has become a source of disdain for me.

I think it is currently negative, blizzard cant seem to decide if they want a low skill game that everyone and their mom can play or a high skill game that can have a competitive pro scene.

Recent changes they have made to the game have been pointing towards ā€œlow skillā€ and while there is nothing wrong with that its just not a game i would be interested in. They seem to be focusing massively on making some sort of e-sport that everyone will watch, not just ā€œgamersā€, but i honestly don’t think its gonna work with all of their ā€œover-sensitivityā€ for things.

negative, developer communication is poor and they aren’t transparent enough with us.

lots of questionable balancing decisions aswell with loads of feedback being ignored.

While OWL was in full swing I was comfortably in the negative bracket. Now that its over I expect some legitimate focus be turned towards the growth of the game and its community. With the acquisition of a new writer its seems as if they are also thinking that way but I’ll hold my future opinions till I start seeing results.

Neutral. The game has seem some positive changes, but others leave people’s heads scratching. We’ll see how things go for the rest of 2018.

Negative overall, they’re moving away from high skill heroes and more towards low skill high value. While I don’t think every hero should be difficult to play I definitely font believe that every hero should take very little skill and absolutely obliterate high skill heroes whilst taking no skill.

Negative but not irredeemably so. I don’t like the fact that they are purposefully making some heroes OP and some Weak to keep things fresh. It’s obvious and infuriating.

I do like the fact that they’re putting in more tanks and supports. So it’s an overall positive direction with a very negative design balancing mantra.

negative…
not because of balance, this game can never be balanced, but because they don’t even try…they wait for few months to make one or two moves and it’s wrong ones… every.single.time.
also the game became boring, maps are all the same, no new events, game modes…
i mean, you can’t say it’s going anywhere positive…

they are unbelievably bad at balancing

Definitely negative. The balancing and reworks of late have been pretty terrible overall. Lack of interaction with the Overwatch team doesn’t help matters. Then there’s that Lucio emote which wasn’t themed for OWL, being exclusive for OWL’s pass. I think we need a new team, like HotS I believe once had? The only positive, which took ages to get round to implementing, was LFG. I can finally play Quick Play as a team game and not a deathmatch brawl mode.

Negative, from the very beggining
This game is not a stable source of fun, at one point, whatever you like about this game, is going to dissapear, if you liked dive or playing genji or tracer, well… Now you no longer liked this game. Did you like playing old symmetra (All 7 of you) well now you no longer like this game. Did you like Scatter? Well now you lost your favourite hero. Did you like HideNRez? Well you no longer like this game.
Diversity is the poision that is going to kill this game, because it attracts everyone, And basically 100% onetricks, so when you take it away, you have a bunch of angry customers. Let’s say mercy, mercy had a unique playstyle, and let’s say a person named Mike, enjoyed playing only her because it fit his playstyle, then she got reworked, now what he loved about this game… Is gone, and is never coming back, now a bunch of mikes like him fill up a megathred with 60000 posts, and the same with a LOT of other heroes.
Whatever you love about this game, it isn’t here forever, this is what i mean by ā€˜ā€˜Not a stable source for fun’’

I’ll say 50/50.

Negative :

  • Not enough comp viable content
  • Balance/bug issues which takes forever to fix
  • … sometimes weird balance decissions

Possitive :

  • Seems like they still want to make OW better, even if they fail at it (sometimes)
  • LFG
  • Endorse
  • New heroes (it takes a bit too long to release, but still… good we have them)
  • My new main Hammond The Nuclear Hamster

… it just few of them. Nothing is black and white. If someone would ask me " do you think current ver. of OW is better than release one ? " , I’ll say ā€œYes!ā€. Why ? Seems like peoples forgot about this but we had TONS of balance issues at release. Look Hog 1.0, Sold. 76, Hanzo (do you think his current arrow hitbox is big ? Well, it was like 2 times bigger) etc. I like current version of OW much more BUT that doesnt mean devs are doing their best (in my opinion). There is still huge amount of work to make this game like it should be.

Speaking broadly, I would say the direction is actually positive for me, haha. There’s been a lot of updates to the game that I felt it really needed, from LFG incorporation to balance changes to new hero additions that I feel bring life to the game when it was growing stale. OWL not only made me more inspired to play but I could feel it was doing the same to others; people learned and mimicked the pros, there was a better understanding of the game and how to play, so the quality of each session has generally improved.

On the other hand, there’s also lots of issues that aren’t being addressed, and those are on a timer. Eventually, people are going to lose patience waiting for these issues to be resolved, myself included, so I hope Blizzard understands where they can start making some progress. Not just in the balance department of heroes, either, but in other areas. The lack of events, and especially fresh events, is disheartening. There’s very little spurring the community together to do something, there’s no weekly or monthly challenges or events or anything, nothing in the longterm to strive for other than comp seasons, over and over, pushing your arbitrary SR number up or down. And the lack of guilds or an equivalent, after two years, is frustrating to think about.

Each of my games recently have, in general, been better than at least some periods of Overwatch. I would say that there was a honeymoon period where I was first obsessed with Overwatch, followed by a long grind that eventually lead to a high point. Following that was a stretch of time where I barely played, and when I did, I often just find myself stumbling into the very things I disliked. It’s only recently, with Brigitte’s addition, that I’ve found more to really like about the game. Largely this is due to Brigitte butting down an expired meta and bringing life to a whole half of the roster – like her or not, Brig changed the game and she made a lot of weaker heroes have new places to shine.

Overall, I’m having a good time, even if I do find certain aspects currently to be frustrating. I trust Blizzard with this game, they’ve been good with it so far, I just hope that some of these deeper issues can be resolved soon. Especially the issues that would tackle community engagement, I would love to see this game do more to bring players together, especially now that OWL is no longer the one horse expected to carry all that weight.

I personally think Blizzard was doing well all the way up to the release of Orisa. From then on it just went downhill.
We all know what a good Doomfist is like, no explanation needed here.
Moira? Your in a team fight and you split off to fight someone 1 v 1, you are winning but also on low health, you go around a corner to reload and then a small little flying purple ball comes round the corner and kills you…
Briggite: ā€œLol Mcree you’ve been doing it wrong, ill show you how to stunā€
Hammond: ā€œWee, spinning is so fun, yay i can knock everyone up every few seconds, i gain more shields the more of those dumb enemies chase me, i create more space than any other tank with my ult because i drop many balls that can kill squishies in 1 hitā€.

All-in-all, I say it’s taking a very quick downward spiral.

At the very least, the most recent patch seems to be a step in the right direction.

More positive. I mean if balance is the only gripe people have then isn’t that a good thing?

Its becoming more astrategy game than fps. Which im not sure is good or bad. The general census is good?

Negative imo, it’s becoming more and more moba and dropping FPS aspects which is driving me away personally. Lock on beams, no mechanical skill requiring heroes, and spammy DPS heroes are dominating right now.
