The complete abandonment of this game is perplexing

Nothing worth spending coins/real money on since like the second month of the game. Unless you count OWL tokens. Only way I see they make money on this now is new accounts from people that are banned or SR shamed. Hell, charge for access to advanced stats. People would pay. Put better cosmetics in the game. Add something other than golden guns. People would throw money at this game if there was a reason to.
Narrator: There was not a reason to.

No, content. Maps. Heroes. Nothing.

Why didn’t they just keep working on OW1 while working on OW2. They’ve basically left a game dead for over a year at this point. A major release from a major company that is still heavily played. Just dead of content. Shocking. Almost like they’re run by people that just don’t get it.

Hundred dollar company.

I am just going to pretend it is normal like the playerbase does to fit in…

They are trying to rework the game into season pass format. Apparently, it takes them a long time.

If you compare this game to Team Fortress 2, OW is doing great tbh.

This is the first sin.

First sin made thanks to good name and heritage of company, to accomplish stakeholders.

They perfectly knew would not work on long term. They had 2 choices:
1)Free to play + pay cosmetics (as most esport titlets)
2)Pay to play (used mostly for single+multiplayer titles, old school).

The 1) makes solid base for long terms, the 2) makes stakeholders very happy. This is why we got a lot of atypycal censorship for profiles, match history etc…

Years ago I wrote this in the forum, and how smurfs would became an issue and all players said me “crazy”, today seems I was not so crazy.

Er- it had nowhere near the heyday or length or profit that TF2 did. It’s a failure compared to that game.

OW made over a billion dollars in microtransactions alone during the first three years, and that’s not even considering the box sales. TF2 will almost certainly have a better long tail due to not making a sequel, but I seriously doubt TF2 has come anywhere near OW in its first 5 years by comparison.

Not that we’ll ever know because valve doesn’t publish numbers.

Its still making way more money. The community market, item sales, trading, and boxes lol…

Whatever tho, it’s not a big deal. But TF2 did much better than OW overall. It changed the landscape of gaming on its own.

This game has made (and still does) a good amount of money only from merchandising stuff.

I mean I NEVER buy videogame’s merch but I did buy a 30cm figure and a couple of funkos for OW.

Hell, my wife doesn’t even play the game but she bought a Pachimari plush because she thinks it’s adorable.

they gave up a lonngggggggggg time ago and it shows. They are hoping overwatch dies before ow2 comes out because i’m sure they are way further behind than we thought by what they showed us and basically no hero’s when they have said forever now they have at least 7 in the works which i think was just a big lie to the customers.

That’s not a really high bar to clear though.

like OW1 development started in 2013-2014 and 2 beta’s were released in 2015 and the game was released in 2016. i dont know why it’s taking them 2-3 years(2019-2021) to even release a closed or open beta

Have you guys ever played WoW? There’s always a massive content drought while they buckle down for the next expansion.

It’s just that they decided to make a full sequel so it compounds the typical blizzard philosophy.

You got to be kidding. look up some stats before you use your emotion to speak.

Overwatch has far eclipsed TF2 in revenue and player base many times over.

On the contrary, they saw the big picture: this game is not making big money for them anymore. So they used OW2 as an excuse to abandon it completely in order to stop wasting their resources on something that’s not profitable enough. Capitalism in a nutshell.

It’s been that way for few years now. Smurfs are the only way this game even makes money anymore. Which is why they run around free.

Because all of that is being held back to drop together with “OW2” to make it look like it offers more content than it actually does. It’s amazing how a PvE mode is holding back PvP content because new maps and heroes are gonna show up in the big campaign.

I can’t know their plans, but I can say you was already planned, and I’ve good arguments. My language voice actor of Soldier 76 died of a heart attack in July 2020. The new contents we are receiving, including those of this archive, carry his voice.

So, or they produced the voices compartment also for overwatch 2 before that date, or it was all planned before that date.

Why invest money on a sinking boat.
