Hello! So my brother and I were playing Overwatch tonight, and we came across a group of some pretty crude people. All of a sudden the text chat starts showing up saying that either I or my brother were saying things that we never even typed. All of a sudden it would say Cricket (Wrecking Ball): “Crude Message Here”, even though I never typed it at all.
I suspect that it was somehow an exploit that one of the other people were using because it was along the lines of what they were saying. I’m hoping that other people can help Blizzard be aware of this issue because it could lead to a lot of false reports towards people who do not deserve them.
I do not really have any way of proving that I never typed those messages, I’m just hoping that Blizzard does have a way to see that It was not me or my brother saying those things. I know a lot of people won’t believe it, but I hope that they do. This is a pretty big issue considering it can be used to make anyone look bad. Any insight on this would be really helpful! Thanks everyone!
Yeah there’s been reports about this before. I’m surprised Blizzard hasn’t done anything. People have managed to change their name within a lobby and impersonate someone else.

Thanks for the quick reply! I’m glad i’m not the only one with this issue, but it does suck that it has not been addressed yet
Good to know it’s a known issue! I was really worried about getting banned for something that wasn’t even my fault. How long has this been an issue?
I think it started at around the start of the month. So not too long, but long enough for Blizzard to quickly patch it.
I wouldn’t worry too much about being banned. As long as you tell people in-game that it isn’t you saying those things to avoid people reporting you.
The current date is May 25th, 2023 and I’ve just come across this issue again. I typed “gg” into the match chat but instead the chat said that I typed “I could really use a hug right now.” I hope blizzard actually fixes this issue
As it so happens, the Overwatch chat system has an autofilter function that replaces all messages containing “ggez” with a number of substitute messages, with “I could really use a hug right now” being one of them. That is far from being an issue, if anything, it’s one of the few well-implemented anti-toxicity measures Blizzard has come up with. Every time a post like this one comes up, it is always amusing.

That’s not cool. I understand from a business standpoint actively mitigating toxicity but restricting text chat to the point that people don’t even want to use it is ridiculous. I’ve seen people type cuss words in chat and they aren’t censored so what’s the deal with that?
What do you mean by restricting text chat to the point that people don’t even want to use it? The autofilter function only works when you typed “ggez”. No other messages are affected by this. The fact people are able to type cuss words in chat, if anything, shows how unrestricted text chat is. You can censor them yourself however through enabling the profanity filter for text chat in your settings, or by disabling text chat altogether. There is a similar setting for voice chat as well.
