The amount of VRAM for games is getting kinda nuts, I’ll be upgrading before long from this 12 gb 2060, and will be looking for 12 gb+ versions of newer cards.

So now I ask… Should I just bite the bullet and jump to AM5 (For faster RAM, and PCI-E 4.0/5.0 support)?

If I chose to stay on AM4, I have limited options to go forward CPU wise, with the 5800x3D being my best CPU, and I figure it shouldn’t bottleneck nearly any GPU I put in.

So what do you guys think?

Side note: I’ve been eyeing Intel Arc GPUs, and the 16 gb model looks appealing.

5800x3D isn’t an AM5 chip. You’d need a 7800x3D. But the GPU is dependant, I have a 8GB 3070 and have no problems with VRAM in any of the games I play, perhaps your GPU is just getting to the point it is not capable of running more demanding games?

Also if you’re going AM5 you will need DDR5 RAM which is kinda pricey depending where you’re in the world. 32GB’s is the sweet spot.

Never said it was, was saying that’s my only real upgrade on AM4.

I’m wanting to run certain games completely maxed out. RE2/3/4 Remakes hit 14 GB Vram when I do that in 1080p alone. My 12 gb 2060 runs most things still well on medium (Which is a reason I want to upgrade).

That’s why I said bite the bullet and make the jump, it’s a completely new build. Would only use my two NVME’s and my SSD from this comp, and maybe the PSU.

Regardless, thanks for your input. As for your comment about my GPU getting too old, probably, but at the same time, I’m playing everything I want still, just toned down, as I’m not a graphics snob.

If you plan on playing current and future AAA games on high settings 1080p you’re gonna want at the very least 12gb of vram. Anything less will have you resort to lower texture settings even though the rest of your GPU should be able to handle the game. Also unless if you can find a cheap 5800x3d and mobo combo I’d go with AM5 since its a platform that should be getting refresh cycles up to 2027. And AM4 is basically dead (ignore the stupid 5900xt).
Also if you where to choose Arc be aware of compatibility issues (look into Linus Tech Tip’s stream where they compare what games run)

I saw this, and it’s what made me not buy one already. I’m still interested, I just want them to be further along with their support.

Where you talk about the RE remakes the vram requirements are insane yes but its also not neccesary to max the texture settings in these games. prioritize other settings first and adjust the texture res until the bar is filled. What I did anyway with my 3080 12gb

Oh I know, I dial it back to keep it around 11 or so, the graph readout they have on what load your CPU and GPU are going to be undertaking is amazing. It’s like they knew it was going to be nuts on both the CPU and GPU of release time comps.

AMD RX series of cards offer more VRAM at a more affordable price. Their last gen cards aren’t overly expensive at the 6800xt range and offer 16gb’s of VRAM. Only issue is that I have heard things about driver support on RX cards isn’t the best. But it could be worth looking into

I’ve thought about going back to AMD, but I had a lot of issues out of my last RX card (Was a 580).

The XT and XTX lines look decent though.

My friend has a 7900XTX, he hasn’t had any issues as of yet. Maybe that was a thing of the past.

Hope so, it’s why I don’t touch Intel CPUs either lol. I mean look at 13th and 14th gen stability :expressionless:

Yeah, they got too good at taking money and not innovating. My next chip is going to be AMD again.

im using the laptop version of the RTX 4060 and its operated fine so far as its running overawtch no problem and i think my laptop has pci gen 4 bu im not sure what pci version acer put in the predator 16

Fairly sure it’s Gen 4. As the 4000 series are all Gen 4 iirc. (I am not 100%)

pci versions move faster than graphics cards do but this laptop has served me well despite 2 dead usb a ports (i need to RMA this laptop)

Yeah, it’s kinda crazy how we have PCI-E 5.0 support for GPUs, but the only PCI-E 5.0 stuff I know of currently are NVME drives.

Good luck.

7900XTX only had one major issue: if you had the default vapor chamber cooler, there were some early ones that were defective. If you have a AIB card with an upgraded cooling solution or you had a newer stock card then there was no problem.

Best 7900XTX is probably the Merc Speedster.

Eh I’m still running a 4th gen i7 and a GTX 1070.

But I’m getting too old to spend time gaming, so I don’t really care that I can’t run the latest stuff.

Yeah that’s why I bought a 4090 with 24GB :sunglasses:

Still an extremely capable chip. You could upgrade to that and be fine for years to come. In saying that I sold my 14th gen i7 and built a new 7800x3d system. Not dealing with Intel’s degrading garbage even if my chip itself was fine

They offer more VRAM but it doesn’t really mean much because they use the older GDDR6 memory type instead of GDDR6X like Nvidia cards do. It’s why the 24GB of VRAM on the 7900XTX makes it perform the same to a 4080 with “only” 16GB of VRAM. This is just off the top of my head so I could be totally wrong but the VRAM number doesn’t really mean much, it’s the type of memory.
