You got what you wanted, dps. Another Main Tank leaving the game because you don’t like damage mitigation. I have been a main tank since season 3, and am fully aware of how this new patch is supposed to be played. My survivability is not an issue i this patch. It is my teammates that die constantly now since I don’t have any tools to save them.
Dive is unusable because of Reaper and Mei, Hammind is unusable because of Mei, Orisa and Sigma are now off-tanks with no real protective factors at all. Reinhardt is now a must pick, or the Hitscans will melt my healers.
Swapped to heals (my second class) and literally cannot keep up with the damage since my tanks physically cannot do their jobs. DPS wonder why their ques are so long, but its only that way since the other roles are horrible. Again, I know how to play this patch, but it is simply not fun for anyone other than dps. The rounds entirely depend on whose dps are better since mitigation doesn’t exist. You just best hope your dps can get picks faster than theirs.
It pains me to say it, but I am done until there are major burst dps nerfs. I hope you like your que times.

Find a friendly Zarya. I helped a Wrecking Ball hard carry into a team with Mei on it earlier today, and it was glorious.

How I became a tank main - I filled - and I kept filling - and I didn’t stop filling - a wee while later - I had about 800 hours on tank with less than 50 hours on DPS and less than 100 on support. I didn’t become a tank main because that’s what I liked back then either - if I didn’t we had no tank.

OP didn’t mention Roadhog, who has gotten much better since he breaks barriers and less barriers means more hook opportunities. Zarya is also really good because there are less barriers to shield people from her ultimate and at high charges she does fairly decent damage to them.
If anything, Winston is probably worse because Roadhog punishes him hard and his ability to hit through barriers is less desirable when they break so easily. D.Va has always had it rough. Hammond, Rein, Zarya, Roadhog, and Sigma are still really solid picks I think. Of course, they need proper support and they need to be played well, but how is that different from any other character?
Like, tanks can’t just sit behind barriers anymore. It was slow and boring shooting at barriers all game. I’m personally happy to see things change like this where positioning and awareness are more important than just hiding behind 2000 HP of instantly replaceable barrier.

I too have given up tanking after this last patch. I explained my theory in another post. Main old-schooler tanks have quit OW after his patch and are being replaced by new, very green, tanks who either:
A. Don’t know how to tank
or
B. just plain suck at tanking with these nerf/buffs.
Not only that but the old school main tankers, like myself, Aren’t happy with these changes because Hanzo, Mei, Reaper, and Widow weren’t touched at all these last few patches and are just dominating the play style now.

To be fair, widow got that grapple hook cooldown increased from 10-12 seconds, but the divey tank counters that benefit from that aren’t doin too hot (d.va, winston, and wb) whichhhh can go back to mei, hanzo, and reaper are doin just fine

Yeah I know about the Widow thing but come on just a 2 second nerf? So she grapples to a location and camps there for X amount of time. Plenty of time for her to do damage and reposition. Because realistically, a small engagement can last anywhere from 1-3 mins and a large fight can last anywhere from 5-8 mins. Unless a team is stomping then, yes she becomes pretty pointless.

I gotta say these negative tank experiences aren’t what I’m seeing right now. Reaper ruins games, sure. But mostly, it feels like tanks are extremely impactful. If I have a good tank comp, we’re probably going to do well. I nearly always get good medals for elims/damage on Zarya and I feel like my barriers are helping my teammates as well. Even on Rein I don’t feel too bad unless the team is just so much worse it’s getting wrecked anyway.

Its back to where it was pre-buffs, but yea, with the dive tanks (well dive heroes in general no?) getting wrecked theres no one that really benefits from her sitting there an extra two seconds loll…
The reason I stopped wasn’t because of the overall tactfulness of the tank role tanks have on the game. It’s because Blizz is forcing me to once again, as a main tank, come out of my comfort zone and re-learn the game again with an entirely new play style.
That and Reaper and Mei. They just dominate over tanks. Especially if you have x2,or even 1, flanker DPS on your team who can’t protect you.

I had the opposite experience. This patch made tanks playable again, to the point I didn’t touch live when PTR came out.
Mei is a problem, sure, but I don’t think it’s going to be for much longer.

Same, I started playing again because the new patch made tanking funner. That said, I just wished there was something I could do about reaper and mei. They just walk up to the tanks and do whatever they want without fear of dying.

just go to the dark side and play Reaper/Mei.
Reaper and Mei are significant problems, for sure (although I feel like usually you can beat a single Mei). Aside from that, though, I feel like the only tanks that you have to re-learn are Sigma and Orisa. Rein honestly feels the same but better; the nerf to 1600 shield is barely noticeable and his buffs outweigh it by a lot. Zarya and Roadhog did not change a bit (actually, scratch that, Zarya got fairly significant buffs). Wrecking ball and Winston simply improved marginally. Dva is still bad unfortunately but she’s been bad for a while.

Makes total sense for sure and I agree with all you said. My problem, and why I stopped playing all together, is because I was a Sigma main and I got my main got nerfed because of the shield meta. I had gotten to the point where I was becoming very powerful as Sigma and now because of the bickering of the shield meta I now need to relearn the game? That’s not very fair I think and I don’t appreciate Blizz catering to some people while punishing others.
And I get it, it’s a fine balancing act on Blizz part but to me my balance shifted for the worst and just don’t feel like doing it anymore.
If other people enjoy the patch then good for them I was one of the ones who disliked it quite a bit and it was the last nail in the coffin for me.
I mean, Sigma was always going to be heavily nerfed. He was obviously and badly overpowered. I’m sorry, but he really was… I remember when he came out on the PTR and I was doing better on him than on my main tank the very first day he was playable. My main tank was Orisa, by the way. Yeah. He was that much better than Orisa.
