I’ve been playing a considerable number of tank and primarily support games in recent times and what is striking me relative to the damage role is the lesser ability to carry. The reason why I’ve been able to play the damage role over 1000+ hours is that I’ve felt I could have a great impact on the game. Sure I had teammates but I knew I had a lot of control over my destiny and if I did well even if I lost I knew I was on the right track, not to mention I was satisfied by the gameplay. Tanks and supports are capable of having decisive effect too but their average and ceiling strikes me as lower. Add in the fact that generally speaking the mechanical skill involved is less and these two roles clearly trail damage in gameplay satisfaction.
New heroes are not going to change this much. This is a balance and characteristic matter. Amusingly a foolish poster has just been complaining how Ana’s design is “idiotic” because it has a higher ceiling associated with skill - according to this poster all healing should be “easy”.
Deplorably such a low quality inflammatory post is what generates discussion on this childish forum. But the poster’s sentiment does reflect my own playing experience - my carry potential on tank and support strikes me as much lower than on damage and the mechanical skill involved is much lesser. At the same time we have this serious problem with the queue times of the much more popular damage role because the developers decided to implement a singular rigid role composition that locks each role in a 1:1:1 ratio despite the player population not being close to it.
I remain of the strong conviction that a way out of all these issues that has to be experimentally pursued is opening up composition restrictions to allow triple damage while strengthening both the tank and support roles to perform their functions more effectively. The kids on this forum cannot string together a handful of coherent constructive thoughts - they just b**** all the time. The Blizzard employees who are supposed to be following the forum seem but a mere step removed from the average poster and streamers strike me as useless outside of their playing ability. Seagull’s “only complaint” about 1-3-2 was that maybe 1-2-2 would work better. Emongg doesn’t like “negativity”. There has to be one adult in this God forsaken virtual room capable of a lengthy logical discussion.
The tank and support roles aren’t going anywhere and neither is the natural preference for the damage role. The roster is already relatively mature following four years of development in addition to the selection prepared for the game’s release. Its characteristics, its boundaries, have already been largely set. You cannot have a few new heroes supersede the ones already existing so as to make the tank and support roles fun enough to make a big dent into player preferences. You either reimagine what tanks and supports should be generally speaking or you’re stuck with an insidious 2-2-2 that will take a heavy toll on the game. The above thread details a slew of changes for going after the game’s biggest problems. This is what the Experimental Mode should be for.
It is clear to me that no one on the development team and certainly no one on this forum will think big and bold enough - most people literally just cannot think well enough to come up with something like this - to at least take a real shot at addressing the game’s several major problems.
But me and Ana played darn near perfectly together. We swapped to Moira Mercy for more heals, Lucio and Moira for speed and defensive.
We just couldn’t make enough difference as our tanks died fighting 4v6 because our dps walked off and died 24/7 spamming heals
The sad part was this was a masters game…
.-. I hate these types of statements that completely disregard the subject because of phrasing
Gr8. Your opinion doesn’t even address the problem that dps have an over-arching impact on matches, whether it being a need to swap and counter, smurfing or just spamming I need healing. But I’m glad you got it out.
I need more people who agree that the goats buffs need to be reverted already
Look at Mccree who almost became thiccree to get his fire rate reverted
It took the devs so long to acknowledge blatant power creep, and now they just want the damage roster to be bloated with heroes like 76 who keep getting buffs to force competition with hero deleters like Widow .-.
Why can’t we go back to when Tracer was more than an overtime swap?
Our dps were getting clapped, and we needed them to pressure the enemy team.
Poor wording ig, the match was close at first with me and her being unkillable while being focused, and the enemies got oofed trying to kill us unsuccessfully. That’s what felt amazing, how we worked together to survive against charged Zarya and M1 Reaper.
This is an example of why I’m so condescending. People latch onto Soldier not being very effective despite previously having been the top damage hero in the same state. Yet both McCree and Widowmaker, arguably the top two damage heroes, have been significantly stronger than they currently are. Yet posters like this who can’t even write properly don’t provide such contradictory context.
And it just keeps going and going.
I think it’s fairly natural for people who don’t read and can barely write to be alienated by how I post. This only demonstrates one of my points - the Overwatch community is an inept source of big ideas owing to the mental immaturity of its members. It’s comprised of a bunch of kid-minded people who are basically stuck in a loop, a small world of their own making. There’s supposed to be an adult somewhere!
Not in my experience. Even in a state where supposedly damage heroes lack carry potential you still go through the ladder by far most reliably excelling at DPS. I have yet to encounter a single tank or support smurf I feared, whereas everyone encounters formidable DPS on a regular basis.
I take a little bit of joy when something else coincides with what I’ve been claiming.
But for me, and other players that I know, it’s the opposite.
DPS definitely still have carry potential, but they can only “carry” if the Supports are healing and the Tanks are making space.
Not to mention there are multiple heroes in Tank and Support that do an excellent job of carrying if you’re good with them. Rein, Zarya, D.va, Lúcio, etc.
This logic applies to every role. You’re powerless on tank or support if the other two roles are failing. The damage role routinely has the highest ability to compensate for and overshadow the play of other roles.
Not necessarily, many Tanks have a Tank/DPS duality. Like Zarya, her damage at 80+ Energy is insane, and can single handily win team fights. Or D.va, DM can eliminate some of the most powerful ults in the game, (Grav or Blizzard). On top of that, she has very high damage output at close ranges. Both of these Tanks will often get more kills than the teams DPS.
Again, kind of the opposite. Supports like Lúcio and Bap can pick up the slack of the DPS, while also providing healing. And I already gave examples of Tanks that get tons of kills.
Having diluted roles is neither here nor there although Zarya is rather exceptional. Bringing up D.Va’s theoretical damage output at close range is laughable. Claiming that Lucio and Baptiste can pick up damage slack is even more laughable.
