When will they make tank fun again? We keep getting promises like “we hear you and this ONE change is going to make it better, we promise!” and then we get things like Mauga and tank buster meta after tank buster meta.
I’ve put so much time into this game and I’m just not having fun on the only role I actually enjoyed and it feels like the devs are just continuing to pump out things that make every role but that the fun roles.
Dive and Brawl have always been fan favorite metas. Blizzard should balance a game for fun more than perfect 50% win rates for heros. OH Reinhardt has a 52% win rate gotta nerf him into the dirt and make a horse meta… OH Winston is performing well, can’t have that let’s introduce Mauga. stupid balancing making the role that no one wants to play more and more miserable…
This is a rant. I know some of my points are stupid, but I don’t care, when a role has 8-16 times less people queuing for it than the other 2 roles combined, they are doing a bad job to entice people back to the role. And don’t even get me started about how everything is the tanks fault every game. Everyone in the community tried telling y’all this would happen when you launched 5v5… And the community is toxic as ever and only have one tank and 4 other people to dog pile on. Do better Team 4. This sucks. I don’t want to play this game much right now and this is the only game I’ve really played in my time off work…

The major issue is players thinking that more people want to play tank almost regardless of what they do. This is true to a point.
They can do much to influence a portion of players into tank, but as a whole they already made abundantly clear in the dev blog and other player’s experience, no one wants to play tank. They want to play DPS. This is true across multiple games.
We all have to ask ourselves why is that? Its because most player’s can’t cope with taking pressure. Especially the being hit kind. DPS are evasive up in your face or they are the shoot from a distance type of hero.
The other thing too is DPS is very simple. All you mostly care about is shoot the enemy team. None of this tactical nonsense you see with tanks or having to worry about others like support.
Nah, keep it simple. Just give a player a gun and care nothing else but the enemy team to shoot at. Tanks by design are the get slapped with a beating and keep on going.
Tanking in this game means all the annoying cooldowns will get dumped on you. You will get booped, stunned, slept, anti’d, booped some more, discorded, hacked, hindered, and then you get blamed at the end of the game. Blizzard will never be able to fix that because they can’t.
Honestly, I startedp laying tank all the way back in OW1 because I was tired of dying to that stuff on support/dps. On tank, I can’t die to that stuff. They are the only characters who can survive it.
However, most people have some priorities in their brain wrong thinking that getting CC’d is worse than dying. CC is not a guarantee of death as a tank, but is almost always true of a squishy.
Being temporarily unable to move for liek 5seconds is apparently worse than suffering an terrible 10seconds doing literally nothing in respawn timer and another 10-20seconds walking back to the fight. That is agony actually being dead. CC is peanuts in comparison.
This is an FPS game, tanking isn’t popular in shooter games, always been this way. Tanks are also really hard to balance in an FPS, this is also how its always been.
Its not a problem exclusive to OW, its probably the most prominent example tho imo. Been this way for a loooonnnngggg time.
OW1. Too much CC.
OW2. Literally gut sleep dart against tanks. Completely removed freeze from mei. Gutted flashbang from stun into a slow or hacks against mobility. Completely removed brig stun outside of ult. We even removed an entire tank from the game that can’t CC you.
Nah, its too much CC still. All of these tank wannabes can’t take a punch. Going to 6v6 isn’t going to fix any of this. It’ll only get worse as you now have another player on the field. Oh, you might sometimes not be the one to take it all, but your lows will be worse.
OW1. Tanks take too much damage.
OW2. Lets buff the HP of all tanks. Lets remove a tank from the game. Better armor mitigation. Headshot passive. You get all the attention of your supports. We nerf Zen discord application.
Nah, still too much dmg. 6v6 isn’t going to fix this. You have another damage dealer in the game. You are going to end up more killable than ever before.
At the end of the day, players no matter the format can’t take the pressure or take a beating. We don’t need to try to appease enough people to equate to 33% of the population. We only need enough for 20% of the population and that is much easier to accomplish than under a 6v6 situation.
My only complaint right now playing tank is where’s my beam resistance on D.Va. Honestly playing most tanks feels pretty good. There’s some balance issues here and there but really I just don’t want to be hard countered and forced to swap. I’m ok with softer counters that I can out skill. I’m not as ok with counters that someone with a lot less skill can get the same value.
I hate to say it; however, I am not sure it is possible to make tank fun for your average gamer without systematic changes. Albeit, i doubt that is their goal to begin with. They understand there is no universe where tank is the most popular role or even on par with DPS. They just want to get us as close to the golden ratio (1-2-2) as humanly possible. There are trade-offs and compromises wherever they turn. It’s just about trying to find that sweet spot that attracts a respectable amount of converts.
I appreciate this. Probably should give turning chat off a go and see how things go with that. Definitely takes a certain mindset to play tank and my bipolar a** goes through rounds of loving a loathing it. Last night/this morning just felt miserable. over half my games were just tank buster comps or start fine and then have a full team counterswap me. I just needed to vent about an annoying weekend of playing tank.
for tanks rn, it’s more of luck and praying not to get counterpicked by 5 people than skill, you can be a shield bot or no.1 rein player in the world but your skill doesn’t matter in terms of winning, if you are getting counterpicked by 5 people your whole team has to switch, basically skill < counters I still don’t know why some people spam “tank is so op bc mid s10 patch” which is pure BS, I think if tanks can play what they want and still enjoy the game, then everything is fixed (just getting basic rights)
Everything rn as a tank just feels like playing a card game, you either counterpick their counterpick or guarentee loss
I’m normally pretty stubborn about not swapping as tank. I pick Hog mostly, a bit of Zarya and a bit of Sigma. But mostly Hog. My win rate is a bit below 50%.
Last night and this morning I did the counterswap thing. Every time I was struggling on my hero I just swapped to counter their tank. I won 11 games in a row. It was so stupidly easy. I usually just ended up on Orisa or Sigma or Zarya depending on the other tank.
Now I am suffering because it has decided I’m a better player and when I went back to not swapping I lost the last 4 games.
