While Tactical Visor is active Soldier 76’s rifle should behave like firestrike or dragonstrike; ignoring any barriers in between him and his target. Helix rockets would behave normally and would not pass through barriers.
“Barrier” refers to blue square abilities and not temporary-shields gained from abilities like Sound-Barrier. This would include conventional barriers, such as those used by Sigma, Reinhardt, Winston, Orisa, and Brigitte, but also bypass special barriers like Zarya’s bubbles.
This would effectively make Soldier 76’s ultimate a strong counter-play to both double-shield and Reinhardt/Zarya tanklines, something that is noticeably lacking from the DPS lineup since Sombra’s EMP is currently the only ability that fulfills this purpose.
Very simple way to add a huge amount of value and utility to one of the most underpowered ultimate abilities in the game.
It is still sustained damage at a rate of 171 damage per second for 6 seconds.
This allows a maximum of 1026 damage outside of damage boosts. This is barely enough to kill two tanks.
It is still easy to avoid by breaking line of sight.
It is still easily countered by both sound-barrier, transcendence, immortality field, or simply focused healing.
The only thing it does is allow him to trade potential headshot damage for reliable sustained bodyshots that cannot be stopped by barriers. It enables a tactical option that does not exist otherwise.
Against a team with no barriers, it is still worse than firing his rifle normally.
Yes it dose, Orisa, Reinhardt and Sigma pretty can nullify S76s ultimate. Without their shields, they’re dead quite fast. Tanks drop incredibly fast as it is already, we don’t need any more abilities that puts tanks in any further disadvantage.
Beside, if S76’s ultimate - as bullets - goes through shields, what’s next, McCree’s ultimate too?
on paper that sounds good but the developers original intention was to make soldier as approachable and casual friendly as possible. I feel giving him a more skill based ult goes against that
It’s an ultimate ability. It should do SOMETHING useful.
…as opposed to every other ultimate that is somehow OK to kill tanks with?
How useful do you think Blizzard, Dragonstrike, and Dragonblade would be if they were stopped by barriers? How useful would EMP be if it didn’t break barriers?
Playing tank doesn’t mean every change to a DPS hero somehow makes you a victim
A ridiculous slippery-slope argument. Dead-eye is not great, but it is not worse than firing normally. Once your aim is good enough, using tactical visor is functionally WORSE than not using it.
Besides, having one niche ULTIMATE ABILITY that performs this specific function is the entire point?
Sure, if they stand there and do nothing for 6 seconds. Is that normally what happens in your games?
I like a suggestion from another forum poster where Soldier can get heat shots during his ult if he is aiming at their heads, otherwise the ultimate would stay the same.
So the ultimate will still auto- lock on unless your cross hairs are over the targets head.
I like soldier as much as the next guy but this is possibly the single worst idea ive ever seen. Adds waaaaaaaay too much value for an ult that charges really quickly AND would then auto-aim at targets behind barriers. This would require the aimbot aspect to go away entirely to be anywhere near balanced
