T500 Tank Rank observation

Anyone notice that the lower end of T500 Tanks this season is still only diamond?

Shining example of the thriving playerbase (And just how many people still play tank).

They need to win a lot of games now to qualify for the list. Give it time.

Season 6 has been live for what, 2 weeks?

Were already seeing DPS filter out to GM in certain servers, with DPS/Support being masters at the lowest on any server.

But tank on all 3 servers is currently still diamond at its low end.

Will this “eventually” filter out to be GM as well? Maybe. Possibly.

Point being, the fact that were a couple weeks in and its this far behind the other roles is both telling, and concerning- Both for the overall state of the game, and the state of tank. These are literally the top 500 players in these roles- Youre telling me there arent even 500 players at master rank or higher who have played, across the entirety of either the US, Asia, or Europe, in the last 2 weeks?

There are definitely less tank players than DPS. It is known. Still, to qualify for the top 500 listing, one now needs 50 wins in a single role. That takes time and not everyone is like Emongg, who puts in 8+ hours almost every day. For comparison, I’m not even sure – without logging in to check – that I had 50 wins in my most played role for the whole of last season, and I play ranked almost exclusively.

I get that

But

Even with a “50 win requirement”, its still indicative of the overall population and tank playerbase in particular, that were still seeing diamond qualify for t500.

Tank player population has always been a fraction of DPS. It’s nothing new. Top 500 lists have been used to ascertain comparative population levels since forever, as well.

But saying that, were there any diamonds or even masters players in Top 500 in OW1? I always thought it was exclusively GM’s in Top 500 in any role.

To have Masters in DPS/Support top 500 is kind of noteworthy also.

I’m 99% sure that this is a result of the harsh new qualification requirement to be on the list and not a sudden precipitous dip in the playerbase numbers. Look at last season’s T500 board for any role and see where the entry point lies. I’d wager that most of these players still play and their rating is still more or less the same, they just haven’t accrued the necessary 50 wins yet to show up on this season’s leaderboard.

There is nothing wrong with having less tank players though. That was one of the main reasons for 5v5.

You now only need 1 tank player for every 2 sup and dps players. The tank playerbase could be half the support and dps playerbases and that would actually be a good thing for the tank role.

Acting as if less tank players is bad is hilarious because it couldnt be further from the truth

As for why tank t500 starts in diamond, if there are actually 2x more dps and supports then they’d obviously fill t500 up with high ranks faster than tanks would.

If there are 150 gm1 tanks and 300 gm1 dps and supports, its just logical that the top 500 for support and dps would sit at a higher rank

Winning 50 games in two weeks is a lot. Most people don’t play that much. I remember reading the average gamer spends a little over 7 hours/week gaming. If you assume most people play more than one game, it will take most people a while to get to 50 wins.

Blizzard refuses to fix ana and her BS sleep dart and anti heals. They fail to properly nerf discords and they fail to nerf healing in general. So now we have stun locked tanks on top of anti heals on top of discords on top of not being able to kill anything against good support players. Playing tank is miserable, its why I stopped playing the role. Its bad enough the pressure falls on you and now recently there is a freaking bastion with a pocket mercy the second you start doing well as a tank. I wont be playing tanks until blizzard buffs the heck out of tanks and make them raid bosses again or they nerf the support role which is the real problem.

14 days isnt that long of a time tbh. Would you play 100 games of tank in 14 days? assuming you had a 50% winrate.
if each game is 15 minutes on average, then thats 25 hours in games. Add queues to that and youre looking at a bit more. Add warm ups and youre looking at even longer.
thats 3+ hours of tank role only in comp only per day every day for 2 weeks. Who would want to do that?

remember its gotta all be on ONE ACCOUNT as well…

its not that surprising really

Not many.

Which is the point

I’m not understanding why people dislike tanking so much. I love it.

It feels pretty good being mega powerful.

I play sigma and I’m just a ranged dps that can 2 tap with a sheild and fat hp.

Honestly the biggest threat is the other tank….

I think people just hate playing people that are better than them….esp on the other roles…

Tbh it’s fun being the best player in the lobby. Doesn’t feel great when you are the worst

I think its a really big ask to expect thousands of players per region to be willing to play 3+ hours of one role in comp per day every day on only one account.

People have jobs, other hobbies, they have to go get groceries or go to the doctor, see their friends. Its not that crazy to see only streamers in gm1 in t500 this early in a season when the requirement is 50 wins and new accounts are free and the new heroes (weaver and illari) are supports

like youre expecting there to be thousands of unemployed people obsessed with playing tank all day? Anyone would burn out grinding any role like that. Its not healthy. Maybe people get frustrated playing tank vs ana sure (they hate losing or playing against anything. CC, mercy, zen, ana etc all of it, flavour of the month complainers) but your expectation is unrealistic

T500 at the start of season is pretty meaningless. It’s just the people who have happened to grind enough wins the fastest.

To stay in GM’s typical top 500, you’re supposed to be on a 60+ win rate, so if they’re not there now, they probably never will be…or at least won’t until the end of the season where they randomly play enough to get the title and then leave again.

Only times this has ever happened is when we’ve had competitive modes that weren’t popular for the most part, (that is, low population) such as CTF and Lucio Ball. Had their dedicated fanbases who were having fun with them, but it wasn’t for everyone to grind it so you found that top end of plat, low end of diamond was t500 the majority of the time.

U have to remember that the top players also scrim, unless theyre like content creators, so the extra requirement hits them harder

Yeah… Not what I was talking about.

I just watched a recent video Flats dod, he did a reaction to Eskays video, and they explain what happens. In OW 1 the only thing you could see on your profile or any one else’s profile was their current rank and their season high which was represented in their actual SR number (like 4500 for top 500 for example)

Apparently it was always the case that a masters or maybe even diamond player could get in the top 500 slot if they played early enough. They technically could be in top 500 but their SR (and therefore season high) would still show 3000-4000. Those diamond and masters players would lose their top 500 status very quickly and would never get it back that season again, unless they ranked up in SR to the 44-4500’s.

Now however, the season high in ow2 shows the rank, not the SR. So this includes that top 500 number. The actual top 500 gm players think that doing that degrades the competitiveness of it all and makes them think, whats the point in playing competitive?. So a lot of them arent bothering with it anymore.

It’s a bit like giving kids a medal for participation so they dont feel left out. And the medals for actually winning and placing top 3 look identical to the participation medals.
