So I was wondering about Symmetra’s mechanical arm. Is it a prosthetic? If so, how did she get it? Did the Vishkar Corporation basically cut off her arm and put on the mechanical one? Or is it just like a gauntlet or something that she puts on over her real arm?

This is prosthesis and Vishkar replaced it, Chu has already spoken about it.

Okay, thanks! But how did she get it? Did Vishkar cut it off, or did Vishkar give it to her after she lost it in an accident?
I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly, it was done to improve the efficiency of her work and Symmetra decided on it herself.

We haven’t been told how it happened. The popular theory is that Vishkar gave her the arm to assist in Hard Light manipulation - some people say Vishkar forced her to replace her flesh arm, some people say it was voluntary.

It’s likely Vishkar lead her to agree to the surgery, as they had begun to brainwash her about the company at a very young age when she was given to them.
I did some research on Micheal Chu’s actual word by word confirmation on Symmetra’s arm, but the closest thing I have on canon facts is Hammeh’s video “Overwatch Lore Bytes - Who has prosthetics?”.
Hammeh stated that Symmetra confirmation of wearing prothesis is during Blizzcon 2016. Nothing else was revealed. Neither the origin nor if the prothesis was a voluntary action or not.
If you guys can find the actual quote from Blizzard about it, that would be huge.

Question: I had a lore question that all my friends and I argue about whether certain characters are actually amputee,s or whether they just have sort of a mechanical thing on their arm. Mainly, we were talking about Lucio, Symmetra, Pharah and Hanzo.
