Symmetra Classiqué 1.0

If anything, I think this highlights the disparity between how Sym used to be and how she is now. In the past, she was kind of a silly, gimmicky hero, but she had a lot of potential to be used in unique ways and allow her team to quickly recover from a random pick. I genuinely don’t think shield generator would be a good ability these days, but her old kit had something her new kit lacks: fun!

Symmetra used to be a pretty cerebral “caught in my web” style of DPS where you could beat the enemy’s with smart positioning and patience. She’s been pretty watered down to a “utility-focused” DPS with inconsequential damage and little battlefield presence. With the “turbo competitive” side of overwatch kind of sunsetting, it would be nice to get back into that heroes that aren’t necessarily “strong” but are silly and fun to play.

I’m glad the first OW Classic seems to be getting a good reception because I am so, so excited to play Symmetra 2.0 again. I wish they would take a page from this version of her and hybridize some of the old and some of the new to make Symmetra feel dynamic and silly and fun again.

I can’t speak to Sym’s balance myself as I’ve only played a few times but what I liked about old Sym was that she offered a lot of accessibility to players who weren’t great at FPS styled games. That was pretty much the main draw for OW back in the day, it was a game for everyone.

That was something a lot of people were really sad about when they reworked her to have the straight beam. Not that it was intentionally designed that way, but a lot of people with disabilities enjoyed that they could still play Sym and have fun and actually contribute by being smart about how her abilities were placed and her lock-on beam.
