I’m absolutely sickened by the sheer negative bias people have towards certain heroes.
As a Symmetra main, I’m no stranger to false reports and toxicity, yet what happened today has surprised even I.
For context, I haven’t played comp since placement matches this season because I just haven’t been interested, but decided to try one match today.
It was King’s Row defence, so a strong matchup for Symmetra, yet I was still subject to someone on my team seeing my hero pick and saying the following:
"Sym switch"
"Now."
Followed by them switching to Mei and saying:
"I don’t play with Symmetras"
They were walling off teammates and their ultimates and then proceeded to not leave spawn for the second side/half of the match.
That’s all it took. No poor play on my part at all prior to this, just an instant negative reaction to Sym and the decision to throw.
I understand its end of season so throwers are more prominent, but it still shouldn’t excuse this.
2 reworks and Symmetra is still despised by some in the community
At least I managed to get POTG with a sweet 3 man turret bomb, I guess
Suffice to say I will not be investing any more time in competitive as I can’t even play what I want to play without being punished.
The community has always been toxic towards off-meta picks, it’s terrible.
Some heroes like Bastion, Torb and Sym have such a bad reputation at this point that I don’t know if they’d even be accepted easily even if they recieved buffs into viability.
Eh, Symm used to be bad before, but after her rework, she’s so much more viable now. People need to realize it. Most of the time, it’s because people don’t communicate and can’t take advantage of her new kit.
its annoying when the people that are mad at your pick start throwing and then blame you.
like what the heck, how in the world is it my fault you went and started jumping off the map for no reason, that was 100% your choice not mine.
I’m not sure how Torb’s is given his new rework, but judging by the fact that Sym’s changed nothing in that regard you’re probably right.
While I think this is a great attitude to have, I literally can’t play my hero. One game is all I decided to play and instantly I had a thrower. Can’t play around that unfortunately.
Exactly right, unfortunately people won’t even chance it. This was straight in spawn, before the match had even started, they threw.
The worst part about non-meta picks is getting someone throwing who then tells everyone in the game to report you. They are literally throwing but blame the non-meta pick because they know people are more likely to believe that they are the one’s at fault sadly…
Not a Symmetra player myself, but when you compare Symmetra to most other heroes, she just feels weak. I don’t know the last time I played against a Symmetra (regardless of my hero choice) and found her that hard to take down.
Like I said, not a Symmetra player myself, but I see a deal of Sym players complaining about her weapon tickrate among other things. I don’t think giving her small buffs would hurt, in fact, I think they’d make her a lot better to play as, with and against. She’s a pushover at most ranks, and even at the highest, she’s still outclassed in a lot of situations.
Yeah, not had a lot of time to see how his rework has affected him myself either - not been playing much recently.
At a glance it looks like some new windows of opportunity have opened up for torb, but honestly I’m not too sure. From the little I’ve played, he’s a blast, but then again he was fun before that, too.
I always remember the one comp game I had on defense when at the start 4 members of my team rushed over to the door and surprisingly got killed.
Oh no what do we do?
I know blame the torb who is now defending the point with our only tank.
clearly if they would switch then we wouldn’t of died.
surprisingly not dying makes it hard to switch so I got yelled at for a good while on that one.
You can play it. Eventually all the toxic people will avoid you so you eventually have fair team mates teamed with you. People who throw for any reason what-so-ever don’t deserve good players at their side. They’d be toxic regardless, since it’s part of their awful personality.
I used to get all sorts of trash talked when my hero was still F-tier. Now I just get trash talked by the enemy team because my hero isn’t F-tier anymore. There’s no escape.
She’s the only close range DPS hero with under 250hp (if you think about Doom, Reaper, Mei, even Brig). This never used to be a problem except now she no longer has her SG or old barrier, so she’s essentially as useful as a floppy disk in a lot of situations.
That being said it doesn’t justify people not even willing to give it a try. I get asking a niche hero to swap if its not working, but before the match starts, even when the hero’s in their niche? That’s crazy imo.
The same has happened for Sym too, but I fear that if people don’t take the chance with them then their reputation will remain unchanged.
Off-meta heroes are the easiest scapegoats, sadly.
That shouldn’t be okay though lol
I don’t want to be avoided by tons of players and be given a huge search time just because I play a certain hero.
I’d rather people avoid me so I don’t have to waste my slots. Plus, I would rather have long queue times if it means not having someone like that on my team.
Honestly, from my experience playing with Symmetra, all of her weaknesses/etc just pretty much sum her up into a “why not pick X hero instead” situation.
There’s almost never a proper reason to take Symmetra, unless you have some actual team-wide communication available, which in soloqueue is about as rare as… well, I don’t actually know what that’s as rare as.
She got buffed on the PTR, so her primary now charges up faster which is great - I know you’ve wanted that for a long while now.
I don’t expect that change to make her genuinely viable in that many more situations, and I’ll eat my words if I’m wrong, but she’ll probably remain somewhat of a troll pick for a while.
I suppose I see your point, but I guess I just wish I could play Sym without complaint similar to if I picked another of my hero pool, like Mercy or Rein.
People don’t need to realize the obvious result when a hero is at the bottom of the totem pole and recognize the full potential of the kit. Sure Symmetra can climb, but at a cost and not too many are up there at high ranks to be notice outside of Youtube source. Some players try to force that advertisement claiming she’s viable, but in reality she isn’t if you gotta struggle than with other heroes.
Torb on the other hand just needs a barrier tank to protect turret while he does his shady work. Torb to me happens to be a bit more flexible than Symmetra and doesn’t have to be babysit outside of turret much.
