Hi all, two year PC player here that’s about to switch over to Xbox One so I can play with my sister. How does the community feel about using Mouse & Keyboard on console? I saw some earlier posts that said it’s frowned upon by Blizzard but not bannable. However, if the overall consensus from the community is that it’s a cheat, I don’t want to use it.
I’m not trying to stir up controversy or get an advantage on others; it’s just muscle memory from playing on PC. But if I have to relearn it all over with a controller, I’m okay with that.
Would appreciate your thoughts, thanks!

From what I’ve seen, it’s highly frowned upon and pretty much on par with cheating, but you cannot be banned for it. I do not play on console though so this is just what I’ve heard from others.

This is only because they use an inferior input system. Sorry but that’s on them. I don’t hear any complaints if someone wants to use a controller in the PC game. Gee I wonder why that is…
But he’s right, you will get flamed for it, but ignore them. That’s a them problem.
Im a PS4 player, and us console players get sooooo frustrated when we see a player using keyboard and mouse, and most see it as cheating. Better aim, faster reactions, its pretty unfair to me

Basically this. If people don’t want to buy a mouse and keyboard, that’s on them for not giving themselves as much of an advantage as possible. It’s not unfair. Everyone is capable of using a mouse and keyboard. It’s just people have this weird thing stuck in their heads that console = controllers and everything else is ‘cheating’.
You’ll get flamed for it, but it isn’t cheating. On a similar note, it isn’t cheating for using a controller on PC
The players don’t like it
But you can’t be banned
That’s not really a real excuse. M+K isn’t a natively supported input on consoles, and it’s a hack by having hardware convert the input signal into a different one. The users who bypass this restriction then also benefit from aim assist.

You can buy an officially licensed mouse and keyboard right on the Playstation website, how it not supported and a hack?
It’s a massive advantage for you if you use M and K.
So i would say (I don’t play on Xbox or PS4 but still) don’t do it.
It’s just frustrating for everyone your playing against.

Officially Licensed by Sony. The TAC Pro emulates DualShock analog input and as such will not respond as a 1:1 mouse on games that do not support native mouse input
Overwatch does not support mouse input. M+K in Overwatch requires things like Xim which converts the input signal and then you get aim assist with the precision of a mouse. It’s a completely unfair advantage for a hardware device designed to give everyone a consistent play experience using the same hardware/peripherals. If you want to use M+K play on PC.

Oh, I see.
Not everyone can afford a gaming PC though. Console gaming is far cheaper.
Anyway, I’ve seen multiple posts that Blizzard really can’t do anything about it, it’s up to Microsoft/Sony to detect it.
They don’t like it, but it’s not against the rules so do it if you want. It makes the game a lot better than trying to get controls that were clearly designed for keyboards to work on a controller.

For sure, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable for everyone on the same platform to adhere to the same restrictions. these platforms were designed around controllers, so if you want to save money to get the console experience, it should also mean you need to use the peripherals designed for the device. Xim adapters are quite expensive too (>$100).

Not supposed to do it but nothing can stop you from doing it with a controller emulator thing (xim4 and the like).
Exactly. I play on console, so I can say for certainty that everyone I play with views it as cheating. Now, you can say what you want, that since its there, it’s my own fault for not buying it, but the thing with it is that I don’t play on a PC. I play on a console, which is designed to use a controller. Simply because it is available to do, doesn’t mean you should do it. And just because you can’t get banned for it, doesn’t mean it’s fair. When the vast majority of people are using a controller, and you’ve got maybe 10% of people using K&M, then that 10% is effectively using an input system that gives them a massive advantage over those that use a controller, as the game on console was meant to be played with. So as a couple have said, I wouldn’t say it’s on me for not buying the K&M too, it’s on those few people that do. You want to play with K&M? Then get a PC. You want to play on a console, you use a controller like everyone else.
If i’m telling the truth, if i figured out you were using M&K I would probably throw a report your way…
It’s not that i have anything against you personally, i have just played against quite a few players using that setup.
Playing against it literally feels like your entire team is at a disadvantage.
The Xbox and console communities just see it as a cheap way to play.
(especially when we are all on the same Controllers, With the same limitations.)
Well you can only use a M&K with this game by buying a $100 device iirc. So M&K isn’t accessible to most and I can understand why it’s frowned upon.

You know, the controller can actually be quite the interesting experience.
I suggest you join us, Friend.
I had to go from console, to PC had to learn the controls from scratch.
I mean, I guess? But if you can’t put a few bucks a paycheck aside to be able to afford something like that, you probably shouldn’t be spending your money on consoles and video games anyway.
I’ve been in tight spots before as well, but it wasn’t impossible to save up a hundred bucks.
I’ve been playing PC games most my life, heh. Controllers always just felt wrong to me, never could get into them.
