Switch FPS Drops Discussion

To everyone complaining about the fps issues, you might want to stop for a second and read this. This is a quote from the IGN review of Overwatch on Switch when it first released in 2019.

“Frame rate is capped at 30fps, which instantly feels at odds with the fluid nature of Overwatch as it exists on all other platforms. Worse, it’s not locked at 30 and it dips below even that when a lot is taking place on screen, which is a frequent circumstance in this game.”

The point I am trying to make is, Overwatch on Switch has always had fps issues. People started noticing it more when the sound issues appeared during the PachiMarchi update because they were looking for other things to complain about that were messed up. I know this is a fact because I have been playing this version for over a year now and never noticed the fps drops until people started talking and complaining about it.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this and have a wonderful rest of your day.

Note: I am not saying there isn’t an fps issue. I was just making an observation of a coincidence. In no way am I actually saying, “The game is fixed. Everyone enjoy.” So please don’t take it this way.

Message for Blizzard: I know I was one off the people that complained about the fps issues and spammed the forums for it. I am sorry for that, and thank you for fixing the sound issues. I will continue to enjoy playing Overwatch on Switch until Overwatch 2 is released for Switch.

They should reduce render resolution

um? no? let’s not downplay this issue here, i played this game for almost every day for the past year and the fps is noticeably worse. the game always had some fps drops here and there but ever since the pachimari update the frames have been dropping to like 15-20 without that much going on on screen. please don’t downplay this issue because we need a fix.

I have too. I’ve played quite a few games and only saw noticeable fps issues once. Not saying they shouldn’t be fixed, just saying I wouldn’t have thought there was a problem if:

  1. Sound issues never took place.
  2. Never read forum posts about said fps drops.

Granted, Switch was my first way to play and probably got used to fps issues and shrugged it off.

You can continue complaining and asking for a fix, but I’m not. I’ve been playing the game and having just as much fun with the fps issues as I was before PachiMarchi.

yeah well that’s you. but i’m having noticeably less fun because the game has been stuttering like crazy since the pachimari update. i’m not imagining things, i’ve played this game so much and it used to be a wonderful experience especially on handheld. but right now, i’m literally getting huge frame drops when i’m just sitting in the spawn in lijiang. the game is a stuttery mess and downplaying the issue and/or pretending like it doesn’t exist won’t help this at all.

sorry if i’m coming off as aggressive btw, just kinda annoying how this hasnt been fixed yet after more than a month of constant forum spamming

Switch pro 120 fps pls nintendo :weary:

That’s fine. Besides I tend to be happy with whatever I’m given. For crying out loud I used to play Fortnite when it first came out on Switch. That experience makes Overwatch right now look amazing. Textures would never load in and if you landed on unloaded textures, you bugged through the map. I know you can’t compare Overwatch to other games, but that experience made me thankful for a game being able to run at all and be remotely playable. I agree that if issues are worse they should be fixed, but that has to be done by people that it actually hurts which isn’t me. Unless the game starts feeling like Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s online mode when I play (constant freezing and stupidly high lag that makes the game virtually unplayable), then I will complain. Good luck and I hope Blizzard does decide to fix it for you.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the game? Does that help things at all?

I know this is probably something you’ve already tried but just in case.

To be honest, the overwatch port looks amazing compared to the bs apex one. Nice job panic button

I’ve tried that three times. The third time involved deleting my save data as well. From what I noticed it didn’t help.

Or… Blizzard could do a better port… :man_shrugging:.

I was thinking about it, I think I kinda know at least one reason this could be happening.(Although originally I wanted to tie this to events specifically the pachimarchi one)

However you pointed out fornite wouldn’t load, I was thinking back to when I sometimes played it on switch, it either took a huge chunk of data out of system memory or I put it on the sd card, I noticed that the game wouldn’t load when landing whenever I had fornite on the sd card but not the system memory.

I also recently replaced my switch and moved all the data back and overwatch happened to go onto the sd card(if I remember right, some of it was on system memory, some on the sd card)

Do you have maybe a 128GB(or other slow sd card), I think the problem lies with a slow sd card which I originally usually had OW on system memory.

The problem that most people also run into is that any game downloaded on switch goes straight to sd card unless the sd card is either nonexistent or is full.

The Fortnite issue has long been fixed and runs smoothly due to updates and bug fixes. I have the OG 2017 Switch with a 128 GB SanDisk Extreme Plus SD card. Also all of my Overwatch data, as well as data for my games that I downloaded, are located on that SD card and my games with cartridges take up space on the actual hard drive. Both storage options are also half full.

When was it fixed however, I played about a summer ago on an sd card, and maybe a year and a half ago on system memory. I have noticed that loading times for bigger games are slower on a reputedly slow sd card and perhaps the pachimarchi update redownloaded or downloaded extra data to the game in a way where it would default to the sd card if you initially had it on system memory(don’t know why else I’d have data for OW on both system memory and sd card)
It normally adds new game data provided you have no save data of the game (which is the weird part, however I have seen exceptions for some first party games) to sd card if it isn’t full and if the owner actually has an sd card.

To my knowledge the free space in an sd card or system memory has nothing to do with its load time, 128 is also reputedly slower than 32 and 64 from what i’ve heard.

Fortnite was fixed about a few years ago.

Not sure who told you that but that version is one of the fastest ones you can get. It has a maximum read speed of 100 MB/s and maximum write speed of 90 MB/s. You can also get it in 32 and 64 GB sizes. From the research I did, the size has nothing to do with the speed.

Also, I never had Overwatch on system memory. I only have it on an SD card.

In my experience, all the big online games I’ve had on sd card speed up by a ton on system memory.
I also don’t have a big understanding of all these things so I have a big chance to be wrong, however in my experience sd card has always been slower at least with the one 128GB card i’ve had.
Like I said I skimmed the video, the fps was definitely never this slow for me, maybe it is different depending on internet, etc, it’s all confusing.

EDIT:
Misheard 32 Internal Storage as 32GB sd card, system memory is the fastest, I’d suggest doing it anyway if you can as it seems it is faster on system memory regardless of the current fps situation.

I also am really uninformed about how OW loads things and all of that, so perhaps it’s a slight menu boost or maybe it just raises the fps the whole time, who knows.

Well, Overwatch doesn’t have a cartridge for Switch. At least mine doesn’t. I just got a code.

This video actually shows that it is much faster on system memory compared to micro sd. Nice catch. I never thought this would actually be true. I’ll have to do this when I get the chance.

These happen on replays though, what I’m wondering the most is how OW loading midmatch is affected by system memory and sd card, if it is at all, It probably only influenced model and world loading but I wonder if it has anything to do with the lag in everyone’s games.

I wonder if the lag midgame is an actual issue, if I’m just imagining it, or if it’s just because of like wifi lag
I’m assuming midmatch lag doesn’t appear in the replay, so either
A. Everyone is imagining the fps drop mid-match
B. It’s an actual issue caused by the PachiMarci update.
C. The update moved some new data to sd card or redownloaded the game.
Perhaps that is why you haven’t noticed an fps drop at all, but maybe someone who originally had it on system memory might.(This would only work if the lag had to do with loading or something(which it probably doesn’t) and the sd card v system memory influenced a player’s mid-match lag, I will play it again sometime this week and see.)

switch users chill, your frames are in the mail.
