Support target priority

I’ve noticed that a few support players mainly focus on healing the tank. Causing the DPS to not have much heals and not be able to get the other teams supports down. Or am I just seeing things?

You’ll need to play support a bit to understand. If you’re working on getting the enemy support down that’s great and a good priority. But if you’re further up than the tank to do it there’s a few reasons you may not be getting heals:

You may be out of LOS
You may be out of range and it’s very high risk for a healer to try to get in range through the enemy to get to you
the tank may simply be blocking LOS for heals to you
you may be taking too much damage and not getting the picks
the tank just may need more healing and in OW2 having a tank up usually turns the game

Things you can try:
try surprise attacks more. kill them before you need heals.
Learn the health pack locations and use them along with your flanking lines
maybe ask an off healer to join you in some ninja work. i’m usually happy to do this as a moira given her mobility, so long as there’s heals for the group and you’re getting picks with the support

If you watch some highly ranked players you’ll also notice they’re extremely good at reducing their incoming damage by using a lot of LOS, some nimble dodging, and also just pumping out more deeps than their targets. That’s a really important skill in OW2, even for supports, but also for dps.

Sometimes tanks are mildly suicidal and much as it sucks to say it often trying to keep an overly aggressive tank alive is worth giving up spread out more heals to a DPS.

Obviously it’s not ideal, but when your team has a tank that eats damage and doesn’t know when to back off, not pocketing him just means he dies right away and the enemy tank runs you over.

ofc it’s the moira main telling me to get health packs
just kidding

I play quite a bit of support. Ana mostly, I spend a lot of time healing DPS too so I’d like the same courtesy when I play DPS lol.

it’s easier with ana and her range tho! A mercy or Moira could try to fly/fade to you but getting in range is high risk, not one I’d take if you’re too exposed. Zen might throw you a HoT but it takes forever if you’re low. Lucio’s gonna stay with the group. Brig, meh. Plus you know we get targeted more now that it’s one tank and lots of flankng.

That’s usually the trend, and also a major problem.

Most of these do not apply for most supports.

Hm looks like this one was taken… and that one too… wasting more time… here’s one deep into enemy territory.

I’m not a high level player. Most aren’t.

It depends on the support. As Zen, for instance, I often prioritize the dps unless our tank is about to take hella hella damage.

Support manages pressure. When there’s a lot of pressure from opposition, more healing is required. When there is less pressure, more damage. Some of the support heroes are better at this than others. Moira’s kit is very intuitive for this balance for example.
