So, I feel that there should be supports that don’t heal as their main purpose. I was just commenting in another thread about a character that specializes in preventing damage rather than healing it after the fact. A couple days ago I suggested a character in another thread with a decoy like mirage from apex, a rez drone, and a pylon that gives area heals as his ult.
I want to know if anyone else has any ideas for supports that break from the straight up “healer”

How about a character that can give shields to their allies. For example, he/she could use an ability while aiming at a friendly character that gives them 25 shield which serves as extra health, but also regenerates after not taking damage for a time.
This character could have some kind of turret(s) that damage enemies, and can be used offensively or defensively.
What about as their ultimate they can get teammates back into the fight faster after they die, like some kind of warp gate or teleporter that can be placed anywhere, and the entrance appears in spawn. When teammates respawn they can go into the teleporter and get back into the fight much faster.
This is just a random idea and I’m just brainstorming but it could be really cool.

I love everything about that idea. It’s like an actually functional version of the original Symmetra design except for the base teleporter, which would be a huge improvement.
First, Should we have a separate healer category?
Like tank and off tank, I think support and healer could be separate.
Support is pretty large
Buffs and Debuffs.
Fast respawn, speed boost, self heal boost, invulnerability, deflect, attack speed.
We could even argue that they should be the one deploying shields for the team
debuffs
slow, cc, roots, anti heal, longer respawn, freeze, blinds,
I think there’s a lot to explore
Some passive ideas,
Give a boost to support when they are close to their team ie +10% armor for every ally in X radius
There’s a lot of ideas that can be picked from other games
Just want a utility-focused support
Make payload go faster
Make the payload heal your team more than normal
Make someone’s magazine infinite temporarily or faster reload
Create a healthpack spawner for your team only, anywhere
Make hardlight bridges and ramps that stay permanent for the match
Make gateways through thin walls so you can make shortcuts (dont need line of sight like teleport)
Give team mates ability for weapon to ricochet temporarily, so you can bounce it against walls and angle it

mercy uses pistol and staff at same time
details:
- left hand holds staff right hand holds pistol
- weapon swap keybind now changes beam (boost/heal)
- boost, heal, and pistol damage numbers adjusted to place mercy in not overpowered state

Toxic hero that has a slime gun that shoots slime that stays n the ground allies who are hit by it are healed and if they pass threw the slime on the ground they are healed and given a movement speed buff enemies who pass threw it take dmg and are slowed.
primary fire shoots the goo and it bounces around leaves a trail and sticks to a surrface secondary fire makes bigger goo blobs.
ability 1 sludge gate which can shoot allies threw this gate made of sludge getting them to hard to reach locations but also can be placed in back of enemies shooting them forward. enemies shot take dot dmg and are slowed.
ability 2 sludge travel they turn into sludge bounce on allies heads healing them and giving a dmg buff.
ult sludge fountain they get a hose shooting sludge like crazy

I would love to see lynx added in (hacker from Zarya and Sombra comic) with some allied ‘hacks’ that buff them.
Maybe a sort of scout/buffer with some slower heals? (Trying my hardest not to accidentally make zen again… LOL)

actually balance the game for 5v5, from the bottom up.
If you were to try to fit a support hero that doesn’t heal as a main purpose, then it would have to focus on either 1) mitigating incoming damage or 2) reducing enemy damage output.
First would be a round about way of reintroducing more shields into the game and the other I think would be intolerable to a lot of players.
I’m super uncertain the game can find a space for a support slot not healing given how the game actually plays.
I want a plant based support. One that actually “roots” enemies. No damage from the root. Just stops them. To make it a skill shot. Make it like a seed bomb thing
And they heal through plants they can plase on the ground. Like soldiers healing station. Or they can have 2 plants. One that slows and one that heals.
You can make them mobile if you want. With a vine whip type thing. And their ultimate could be a giant aoe tree. That heals a bunch and acts as cover. Of course give it health like mei wall.
While in the ult. The character could have reduced cooldown speed.
Primary fire could be a melee weapon or some type of plant based gun
