hi i main support with the time to time that i play dps
i currently main juno for most of my games or switch to illari on the rare occasion (i cycle wuyang and life weaver too depending on maps and team comp)
im relatively new to overwatch as a whole ( 2 ish - 3 months ) and have been bouncing around low gold - high silver.
and i have this current issue that alot of the time my team arent really sticking together, with ofc the acception of some heros like reaper, tracer, sombra ect ect - and with some other dive heroes.
but alot of the time my team is just splitting apart - or jumping into 1v 5’s - causing staggering
i feel like its a TEAM game for a reason no? why do people not know when to fallback for a quick heal or use the medkits around the map, or just give the team a few moments to group up again rather than trying to get player of the game and farm kills but just end up dying every few seconds because youre going against the enemy team with 2 healers, their tank and 2 dps. vs JUST you.
this also makes it so much harder to heal people as well as i have to start chasing my teamates around the map and as a result someone will die as they dont have a healer. i usually notice the other healer having to try doing the same thing.
of course theres nothing i can really do to change what my team are doing, but i can change what im doing.
is there any advice on how to adapt to this, what hero i should switch to, i just want to rank up. correct me if i am wrong though i am new after all maybe im the one missing something no hate to the people that do, do this. I can find myself accidently getting too ahead of my team as dps as well :’)
edit : thank you for everyone being kind & for giving out great advice ! really appreciated

Honesty when a match devolves into team deathmatch, sustain is king. Moira is one of the best choices, mobility, self heal, damage and easy to land and still provides decent heal in combat
Brig can work too, but is much harder.
I say this as an Ana main. I won these types of games you described on Ana, just by surviving much longer than I should, but that also means you play a very different game, you are the fall guy. It’s not a lot of fun, better to switch to a hero like Moira

Welcome to the game! Glad you’re having fun.
I’m a support main also, and what you describe is fairly typical. You can either try your luck on comms (though, be warned, that doesn’t always end well and you need to find a communication style that will be received) or queue as a stack. If you climb further, you’ll also see a bit more coherence from your team, but otherwise, it’s the nature of the beast.
Edit: and agree that a more mobile support, like Moira, Lucio, or Mercy, might help.

First thing you need to learn is NEVER chase a teammate who is mindlessly W keying the enemy. You will more often than not die with them and the fight is over before it starts.
You also should pump as much damage as possible to enemies when you can. Do not fall into the trap of healbotting. A lot of matches are won when supports are balancing damage with heals/utility.
This is going to sound harsh, but focus more on your own play if you’re in lower ranks. Going with the flow will not work because the issues on your team are the same on the enemy team. Always try to be the one thinking outside the box.
Teammates will die. It happens. Diffs will occur. You will get clapped on occasion. The best advice I can give you is to rewatch and analyze your replays. They always give great insight on how you can improve.
Watching better players is fine, but you’ll have to understand why they make certain decisions rather than copy them.
You CAN climb. Never give up!

Hey, a bunch of hours on support here! If you’re team typically splits off on their own, you most likely are in very low elo lobbies. Once you play more your team may be more coordinated once matchmaking puts you in more ‘sweetspot’ lobbies to cater to your skill.
In the meantime, my advice for these games is learn to play kiriko as she is a jack of all trades support and can accommodate for wandering teammates by tping to them, or away from them if another is nearby. Also her ability to simultaneously dmg and heal should really support the teammate you decide to hover with. Best of luck!
