Leaver penalty has resulted in a lot of toxicity, throwing, rage reporting and lots of people buying alt accounts. It has cut down on leaving, but not so much that it’s clear cut that the penalty is a win, in fact I suspect the opposite.
There’s an easy way to fix the problem that respects the leavers and keeps games from degenerating due to non-stop leavers/throwers. Just pause all timers and disable ult charge when someone leaves, and don’t restart it until 10 seconds after the backfill has selected a character.

It’s also lead to a lot less people leaving and games being better.
I think the solution is simple don’t leave.
If the leave penalties annoy you, you are the problem, not the penalty.

And what do you propose for leavers in ranked? Because I am sure you’re not suggesting backfilling in competitive…

Of course not ranked.
Leavers are humans who are leaving because they’re having a bad time playing a game, not some sort of sub-human goblin that deserves to be eradicated. Particularly not for something that could be solved by pausing a timer.

Leavers has NEVER bothered me until Blizzard turned into a problem with the penalties. I see toxic people way more now in QP. I’d much rather people leave then feel like they’re “forced” to play a match they don’t want to. Regardless of the reason.
Now, comp is very different. QP however…I said it in another thread and I’ll add it here. We have one group of people saying the same thing, “It’s just QP, bro” and “Harsher penalties so people have to play with me!”

Do what Xbox did - put them in games with other people who have left similar numbers of games.
“Oh, you left 10 games in the last 20? Here are other people who also did the same!”
Then, they can only come back into the normal queue when they’ve completed a certain number of games. Maybe it will make them a little more understanding.

Maybe a little over the top. I think they’re spoiled, selfish kids who’ve been allowed to ruin games for too long. I don’t think people had been petitioning blizz for leaver penalties before these came out. Blizz can see how disruptive these players are.

Honestly, I think if they leave rather than banning them, just make it so they can’t queue for a game until the game the left is over, or just bring back LFG so people can put groups together of players that want to play the same way. They would need to refine it some as the last iteration came with its own problems, but I also say that with they put it in the game and barely developed on it.

Leaver’s queue, then all the good and skilled players (leavers) can play together with other people who are too high-skill for the rest of us

But they absolutely do deserve to be removed. Leavers seem to think they are important for the game and that Blizzard should be concerned with keeping them. News flash, they want you to quit. It says a lot about you if you don’t have the mental capacity to stay in a game that lasts a max of 15 minutes just because you’re mad you’re losing.

How does this solve that someone left which invalidates some of the point of playing the match? Unless you think backfiling competitive also makes sense?

I don’t think that they think that in general, but if you’re asking someone to sit and fume for 4 minutes getting spawn camped because you don’t like 30 seconds of 4v5, I’m not sure that’s a fair comparison.

Hopefully the backfiller has a stronger mentality than the leaver. Or the second backfiller. If we all had the leaver’s mentality, no game would finish.

You’re barking up the wrong tree, OP. These people aren’t out to improve match quality or make things fair for everyone.
It’s a witchhunt. They are out to persecute a select group of players whose ideals do not match their own. Expect the number of persecuted groups to increase as the crusaders gain power with penalties and bans.
