Sudden Technical Issues after patch

CPU i7-4790K CPU
Nvidia GTX 970 4GB

I’ve played OW on this rig for many seasons but after the most recent patch I’m getting disconnects (can’t find game server, also showing ‘connecting’ on blizzard app) and then today I got the Your Rendering Device Has Been Lost. I’m hesitant to continue to play competitive until I figure out what’s going on. I do not overclock, I’ve tested my PSU which is overrated for the power consumption that I have, so it’s not that. I will concede that my ISP is wonky and will randomly have DNS issues so I’ve switched over to an alternate DNS server some time ago.

But a disconnect just prior to the end of game, coming back in time to rejoin, and mid-rejoin getting kicked back to the menu with a suspension and huge SR penalty when I’m holding gold for healing silver dmg and I want to say silver obj time doesn’t seem right. I get that it makes the experience when you disconnect crappy for everyone, but when you’re contributing in a major way to your team and you disconnect at the end of a pretty forseeable loss, I don’t understand the logic for adding the leaver penalty. I feel like Bliz has the capability to determine whether someone’s ping jumps up through the roof before they disconnect vs. exiting or alt+f4’ing out.

Anyway, that’s enough of the rant about the system, but any thoughts on how I can better troubleshoot on my end to make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Edit: I should mention I did a fresh install of Windows about 3 weeks ago as I am anal and reformat my PC every 3-4 months.

This is a very wise decision to avoid Competitive until your technical issues are troubleshot and resolved. Thank you.

Any game is still winnable for either team until the match is decided. The penalty system is designed to discourage leavers from rage quitting at any time and to discourage those from having technical issues from continuing to play until those issues are resolved. More details about their policy here:

Disconnections in many cases are not the cause of the game server nor the end user but problems in-between. Now it is important to troubleshoot and check your computer and router for any possible issues, however, if that is done and disconnections are still frequent, the next best step is to do a WinMTR test (see steps below).

Rendering Device Lost is a case where your graphics card has an error while Overwatch is running. RDL errors have nothing to do with disconnections, so you may be looking at two seperate problems. There are a variety of causes that can result in this error. This guide is a good starting place to check for any possible issues that may affect you:

Feel free to post more details, if you have any concerns or questions. Cheers! (^^)v

WinMTR instructions:

  1. Download WinMTR from (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
  2. Unzip the file to the Desktop.

  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.

note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~
