State of the matchmaker

So I finally convinced my friend to buy the game and it’s his first pc game other than rocket league and he is being matched vs. gold and up only players and he hasn’t even hit lvl 10 yet. I watched in disgust as one game even put him against a diamond tracer who farmed him like it was harvest time at an apple orchard. Is the playerbase really so stale that this is all they can offer new players?

You learn from tough experiences the most, and who knows maybe the game will put him in a high elo when he finishes the placement comp matches…

You start the game in the matchmaker at an equivalent of 2250 MMR, so Gold is what he would be at to test against, the median of the playerbase (in theory). If he’s put up against a Diamond that is actually a good sign that the player is above average to start, but the matchmaker has to test you to see and it will push up the challenge of opponents till you fall back to a roughly 50/50 win-loss ratio. According to Papa Jeff it takes at least 15 matches, but people here have concluded its more like almost 30 total to get a true rating.

Along the lines of what you described - I took Bastion for kicks on a new account, and I have a few years of experience in OW. I literally made it into a QP game with Masters level players once after I think about the 6th match. I rapidly fell backwards, but by a modicum of skill and dumb luck getting paired with good players who carried me a bit, I made it into that game. I even told them I didn’t belong there, and to be prepared. The matchmaker works, but its dodgy right now because there seems to be no end to the people transiting from console to PC, along with endless PC alts is resulting in very wildly inconsistent games these days in QP, but its affected Comp too.

FWIW, the MMR system was “relaxed” to allow for a spread of about 2000 MMR(SR) it seems relatively speaking; this means it’s entirely possible for a high silver player to go up against someone who just fell out of Masters. It’s not common, but I have been in a few games against someone showing Masters SR because their MMR was essentially Diamond level, while I had people on my team who were Silver MMR. Yes, it’s whack no question but since people refuse to wait for games, this is what you get.

This is partially true; research has shown that if someone so outclasses you there is just not enough information and time to learn anything. You learn the most when your challenger is just a bit better than you in reality.

we can offer new players to get better at the game as they come into well known pvp-competitive game, not witcher-3 to ride a horsy around the world of wonders. In competitive game plays you untill you learn how to play this game by yoursel. Not strong enough - get owned. Got owned - endure. Endured - get better.

Matchmaker has been trash for several years now. This is nothing new. When it takes 4+ minutes to get a DPS game when you have priority requeue, that’s how you know the game is not in a great state

If they made the game free to play, it would be new players for other new players to play against.

the truth is that the matchmaker is complete garbage though. regularly see Top 500 tanks play versus Masters tanks. so it’s affecting new players and the highest end too. That’s a trash experience.

Level 10 can’t play comp, Gold+ levels are comp and not in QP.

You realize there is a viewable profile that shows the players comp rating if it’s not private, right?

So ? what does that have to do with QP ?
QP is designed for quick matches and nothing to do with ranks like Gold etc.
QP MMR and SR/Rank have no relation to each other.

did you even read the post or are you just daft?

if the game wasn’t so dead you could have a quick AND fair game. right now it’s pick one or the other because there’s not that many people playing

BTW since when is a 5+ minute queue “quick”? it’s slow and trash matchmaking. yikes

Post said a Level 10 player was playing against gold ranked players, that’s impossible at there are no ranks (like gold) in QP.
He was playing against players with similar (but wide range) MMR in QP where comp rank means nothing.
If say I was playing (in comp) against gold ranked players (never seen higher than silver) as a bronze player that would be a matchmaking issue. This is just QP working properly.

a brand new player who doesnt even know what abilites do should not be placed against opponents outside of bronze skill level. i get that you wan’t to stomp ppl on your smurf you have there but that is not how a new player experience should be. this is not escape from tarkov it’s not a hardcore shooter.

Ok so smurf gets a new definition, casual (release day) player with 1 account that is not a FPS player that has been max 1000SR since comp started and usually ranks mid-700s bronze and is fine with that (oh and I’m a D’Va one trick)

Every day a new definition of smurf, and I don’t play QP as it’s boring and horrible due to the fact that everything that works in QP is a bad idea in Comp.

except it does matter. when there’s a big difference in skill in the lobby it’s a trash experience. why do you defend the matchmaker when it’s clearly garbage?

I don’t consider it garbage, QP is designed for players to learn and they will learn more playing with and against better players although in my experience in both QP and Comp it balances out pretty good where 50/50 split good/bad players.

If it weren’t for me encouraging him he’d already have uninstalled it and that’s something im sure alot of new players do after getting murdered 20 games in a row. It’s just not a good way of gaining new players.

You think Top 500’s in the same game as plats is fine?

Overwatch is not gaining many new players so your observation is probably correct
