Stadium was worked on before marvel rivals was announced

So can we stop this drone narrative of the miracle of competition making overwatch desperate or whatever nonsense the doomers keep spouting

While it may have started development prior to that, I think it’s reasonable to suspect that the Rivals existence accelerated their timeline and put pressure on them to announce it. They have a relatively limited hero pool and they were playtesting on unfinished maps that were only blocked out in some cases. They almost certainly moved up the release date to remain competitive. Otherwise I suspect it could’ve been a few more months if not next year by the time they showed it off.

I think anyone that genuinely believes they cooked this up in the last few months probably isn’t going to believe the words of the devs anyway, but yeah it’s pretty obvious. Gavin said there that they’ve worked on Stadium for a lot of the time that he’s been there, and he joined the team in 2021. The hero missions (And subsequently the talent system) were scrapped in 2023. That first QP Hacked (Quicker play) was probably testing for the Stadium round times. Junkenstein’s Lab back in October. I dunno, do the math.

Edit: Actually the hero missions were internally scrapped at the end of 2022, but the announcement was made in 2023.

Probably a mash up of a PvE activity that had previously been scrapped.

That doesn’t surprise me, you don’t make 4 talents per hero and a mode like stadium in a short amount of time.

my favorite is how people are dragging the devs for… making improvements to the game. like what

Exactly. When has Blizz, the company that prides itself on “Blizzard polish,” shown maps that were only blocked out before? Maybe it’s happened at some other point in the past, but it’s certainly uncommon and was motivated by something.

MR was announced almost a year ago, and surely Blizzard had people tracking and quantifying its hype and predicting its success (an easy prediction for anyone). I do believe they were already working on this, since Goodman mentioned the possibility of bringing perks to a special PVP mode before OW2 released, but they also had a reasonable amount of time to accelerate this project and produce the demo in response to MR.

And why shouldn’t they? Not sure why people are acting like it’s a bad thing to innovate in the face of competition. :joy:

No, because it’s still true about things like Hero Bans and many other things. Competition is good. This isn’t even a doomer thing. Like Rivals causing them to innovative is a positive thing.

stadium is a reaction to deadlock, not rivals

the shop is almost a 1 for 1 copy

Saying competition is a good thing means you’re an OW doomer, now?

Hero bans and map voting is a response to MR for sure. But if you think the devs made stadium in 2.5 months you’re crazy.

Come on now. We both know that was never an official Blizzard map. It was designed by the community in a special stream and released only in block form. I was there for it, you silly goose.

It probably wasn’t third person either until rivals. Hero bans and loot boxes are likely cause of rivals as well.

Idk why so many people here seem to get offended at the reality of competition in video games. The logical people keep saying competition is healthy for a reason.

It’s also very possible, even quite likely, that deadlock inspired this stadium mode. All it takes is one person in the office to be in the deadlock alpha which has been going on a long time.

So… in 3 months we are gonna get booty skins to compete with MR?

Stadium was in development longer than deadlock has been known, so I doubt that. Agree with the other points, though.

According to Gavin it was. I don’t doubt that Rivals helped cement that decision though.

What you don’t understand is Dev’s know about rivals way before public announcements.

Do you think Bobby didn’t have his plants :cactus: :cactus::shamrock: in netease.

Sadly netease :shamrock::cactus::cactus: in blizzard are way more effective in sabatoging overwatch.

Blizzcon 2019, when they showed Paraiso.

Easy.

ow is better bc mr doesn’t have fps.
only tps which ow has too.
