I’m at the border of plat/diamond and every little bit of sr matters, but I find myself losing more SR than I gain. I don’t know why, is there an explanation for this or do I just kinda have to deal with it lol
Pretty sure it has to do with your individual performance. If you’re losing more in your losses than you’re gaining in your wins, it usually means that your individual performance fell below the threshold for that particular rank. In other words, you did worse than the average player in that rank does. But that’s just my very limited understanding of it. Someone else can probably explain it properly/correctly.
The primary factor in gaining or losing skill rating is whether you are winning or losing games in general. Skill rating chases your “hidden matchmaking rating.” The Hidden MMR is a complex variable which defines the statistical calculated value of your skill. Your hidden MMR can change differently from what appears on your skill rating because skill rating is designed as progressive metric that is easy to understand. Now how much you gain or lose on your skill rating/hidden MMR will be dependent on the following factors:
- Strength of Schedule - This is comparing your personal skill rating with the overall average of the opposing team. If you have a better skill rating than the average of the opponents, you will earn less SR when you win, and drop more SR when you lose. If you have a worse skill rating than the average of the opponents, you will earn more SR when you win, and drop less SR when you lose. Pay attention to the team average skill ratings listed at the start of the match to see what is at stake.
- New accounts - New accounts will be subjected to wildly changing skill rating variables until they can play enough matches to establish an MMR. This can take anywhere from 15 to 50 matches for the most part.
- Frequency of Play - If you play Competitive very sparingly you can see increased changes in your skill rating, because game will not be entirely certain of your hidden MMR. For example if you go on hiatus for over a month, there is a good chance for a few matches you will see increased gains and losses where appropriate.
- Ladder squish - If you are an extremely high skill player (in Grandmasters) you will need to win more games versus losing games to maintain your current skill rating. The opposite is true of <500 SR players where you start to lose less skill rating for every loss. Please note those under 500 SR are no longer eligible to view their own skill rating until they can climb above 500 SR.
- Performance-based metrics - This ONLY affects Platinum and lower tiers, and it is a VERY MINOR influence. Your skill rating can receive negative or positive adjustments based on the performance of the heroes you played in a match based on the average performance of those heroes around the community. (NOT comparing to the performance of your teammates in that match.) What statistics that are used in determining performance is not exactly known, but more or less maintaining a good kill/death ratio or a good healing/death ratio is often key to improving your own hero skill performance. Again, this factor is very minor.
