The limits are necessary as people would stack tanks to win otherwise. It wasn’t inevitable in 5v5 OQ QP since people don’t always care about winning to the point that they would always go 3+ tanks, but in 5v5 OQ Comp? Matches devolved into a tankfest sooner or later.
In an ideal world, yes, I would simply go to an RQ mode. In this world, where 2-2-2 RQ is pretty much unsustainable due to a lack of people willing to queue up as a tank, not so much. It comes down to choosing between high queue times for popular roles or throwing matchmaking out of the window.
While I was concerned about 6v6 S-OQ’s matchmaking at first, in the last few days I’ve been seeing signs of improvement. At the same time, games take a minute max to get going. If it stays this way then it’s the only mode for me. I really hope it stays next season.
In actual fact swapping to any hero is very much part of what makes Overwatch - Overwatch!
In my view at least!
The decision to go with any given composition should always lie with the players rather than the ruleset of the game!
Many of the people who support limits in open queue are already not satisfied and demanding that now support heroes be given a limit of total of x as well!
If there are no role limits then the meta will evolve into some form of GOATS or something.
It took a long time for the original GOATS to see use on the ladder. How long did it take for players to realize that triple support was best in this iteration of 6v6? Like 2 hours? Imagine 3 tanks with all their gameplay changes. A good Hazard alone is hard enough to kill even in 6v6.
Of course, it could be that supports are simply overtuned in current 6v6 (which I’ll agree with), while DPS are undertuned.
I just thought the main reason people didn’t want to tank was the 5v5 solo tank format. With 6v6 there might be more people inclined to be dedicated tanks
The OW game was originally designed and balanced for 6v6 open queue. Once 2-2-2 role enforcement was added to address GOATS, queue wait times escalated since the number of non-tank players far exceeded available tank players. This led to one tank being dropped to reduce demand, so now we have 5v5 as direct consequence of role select.
Had Blizz just capped tanks at 2 per team, and minimum 1 of any role, then that would have been sufficient to prevent GOATS. While 2-2-2 provides a more predictable team comp, it does limit creativity while fostering over-specialization which leads to glaring deficiencies elsewhere, like the inability to function in other roles outside of one’s primary character.
That’s because role queue is the main 5v5 mode that it is balanced for. And because of that, open queue 5v5 is stack tanks to win. Now if they do add 6v6 as permanent, and want it to be open queue, then yea, makes sense to try and balance it for open queue.
I’ve played roughly ten 6v6 matches and there hasn’t been 3 tanks on either team in a single match. In fact, for at least half of those matches, I was the only tank (and often the enemy team would only run one tank). We would sometimes even have only one healer
Despite all that, I still had fun. I don’t dislike the perks in 5v5, but I don’t miss them in 6v6.
Open Queue meta was basically just quad tank Moira and another support. Moira might as well have been her own role. But yeah, if you did not have her, you basically have to run 3-3. Heck, Ball sort of made it so you had to run 3-3 anyways.
But that was fine. That’s the charm of open queue. We have role queue for role limits.
Well, the whole reason for this weird OQ format is they want to restrict ONE particular meta while shortening queue times. Being able to have a bit more flexibility for DPS and Support is kind of a bonus in my eyes. Time will tell, but I believe it’s balanceable.
