I can confirm a few things. Almost everyone on my friend list has suddenly shot up in ranks, this proves the matchmaker just simply shuttles you to the rank it believes you should be at, which we all already know.
There is definitely something that causes you to have far more difficult games once you get to four wins, not debatable. They call in the 5th win brigade to make it difficult to win so you will keep playing.
I reached a tier threshold and immediately had awful awful teammates. Like blow your mind how bad they are. Like 3 and 8 2k dmg while every other dps on the other team has 9k dmg.
TLDR: The baby boi matchmaker devs are still struggling

ORIGINAL POST:
I’m a long time hater of the matchmaker. Some of you bois have started hating the matchmaker in OW2, I’ve been in the matchmaking hating business since almost season 4 of OW1, I’m telling you that because I’m like most of you, I really despite it.
Well I eventually stopped playing and when I did play for a little bit I definitely didn’t take it serious. But lately I have had multiple friends and my roomates tell me that something has changed (for the better) with matchmaking and I should give it a try again, so I did, a lot in the past three days across multiple accounts.
I don’t know if this is temporary or if these are permanent changes but the matchmaker is dramatically better since around a week ago. Are there still lopsided matches where I have no chance to win? Of course, but like 75% of the matches I’m losing I definitely could have won which is extremely different than what I’ve experienced in this matchmaker for over five years. As for the bogus loss streaks, I haven’t seen anything too far fetched, there’s been some questionable but nothing too bad, and possibly some forced win streaks, hard to say. I know this may not be what other people are experiencing and it sucks to hear other people having a fair matchmaking experience if you feel you aren’t, and I’m sorry if that’s the case, but I have to call it like it is, the matchmaking is WAY better IMO (for now).
It’s too early to say for sure, because if I know anything about blizz, they’re just doing something temporary so they can go back to their old garbage of broken/rigged matchmaking, but right now the matchmaking as I’m experiencing it is the best I have ever seen it in my life, but time will tell if this is permanent or not.
If these changes are permanent, it will take months if not a year to turn this matchmaking hate train around, but maybe it’s starting to head in the right direction.
I’d really like some of what you’re having. Went on a thicc win streak a couple of days ago so now my matches yesterday and today (at primetime!) have been dreadfully one-sided. Very cool people in the match like tanks getting stuck on map clutter and dying, DPS not getting a single kill in 3 minutes, Mercys gluing their heal beam to the tank and enjoying a relaxing walk behind them. What’s a Guardian Angel btw? I’m a gold rank pleb so mistakes are obviously expected, but damn…
No it’s the worst it’s ever been.
I keep getting these “improved” plat players that are now suddenly in m1/low gm and almost every game is complete garbage. OW1 MM was miles better.
I believe you. My accounts must be in some type of transition phase, almost every single game is winnable and the game is fun again. If they could keep it like this for everyone Overwatch would get so much playing time and be very popular after about a year of people figuring out that it’s good again.
I’m very skeptical, I’m sure it’s a matter of time before it takes me out of this special queue I’m in that is giving me fantastic games and I’m back to the broken/rigged stuff.
I’m curious if because you think the matchmaking is better now, that it’s no longer rigged. If the quality of the matchmaker now dispells your belief of it being rigged, was it ever rigged or was it just bad?
I noticed one thing. when I turn on ow after a week of not playing, I have amazing balanced matches for a few hours. if I play x hours a day every day, I almost always have one trash in my team and the games are not that close. it may be a coincidence but it has happened to me multiple times
I will never think the matchmaker was not bad / rigged, it definitely was and that’s not even debatable, the things I’ve seen prove it factually. As for whether it was rigged or just plain bad I really don’t know.
Is it rigged / bad right now? Possibly, it’s too soon to say. I would say that it feels like it’s forcibly pushing my SR to where my hidden MMR is, but that’s a guess, maybe it’s just finally not handicapping my skill and so I’m just rolling people. I’ll have to wait and see what happens in the coming weeks, I’m pretty sure it’s going to change on me and go back to its old tricks though, but for now this is the first time in over five years I’ve genuinely enjoyed the game.
So zest good luck with ya, this is what I called the certainty variation variable. After awhile it narrows down and you will be given a “range” you can play in.
Once you get to the height of that range and make new peaks, that’s when the Garbo squad form up and drags you down to the bottom of your sr range.
I’ve experienced it many times, these “good matches” are extending far past that variance time. I’ve had two accounts hard stuck in plat/diamond for years, meanwhile able to easily win matches in Masters (OW1), I tested these accounts in OW2 and they were still obviously hard stuck, “anchored” to these tiers, yet despite being in plat these games were more like Masters/GM.
But since last week I tested again on the broken account and it easily rocketed up to Masters, another account up to high diamond and still climbing (been playing a lot lately).
I think what they’re doing is taking all the accounts that have low SR but high MMR and forcing them to where the MMR is. The adverse is probably true, people can get hard stuck at high SR’s they don’t belong I would imagine, so those people may be dropping in rank right now. The developers recently discussed how in Season 4 peoples SR and MMR will no longer have huge deltas, well mine had a HUGE delta and I think it’s resolving.
Believe me, I’m extremely skeptical of what I’m experiencing too, I am so used to going on a run like this and having a sudden loss streak back to a tier I clearly don’t belong. I know when these streaks happen and they’re not happening (right now) and I’m ranking up properly.
Curious to see what happens when I reach a true peak in SR/MMR, that’s going to be very telling.
So i was thinking. The acknowledgment of “oh we fixed a bug”…. Like was that it? The years of people feeling frustrated and mocked for it, was just “oh we fixed a bug”?
I find it hilarious.
I haven’t been playing either I’m actually afraid to lose my newly peak of diamond and … well… Diablo.
