Some transparency for comp system

Would it be possible to get some transparency as to how this new rank system works ?

In OW1 we knew some criteria:

  • How you’re performing
  • How you’re performing compared to other people playing your role/hero at the same MMR
  • Time on fire
  • maybe more that I forgot

Don’t get me wrong the system wasn’t perfect at all, but at least with those informations you could guess some of the reasons why you were not climbing and question yourself.

Now, SR is gone and you’re stuck with your 7 wins to hope it goes according to plan, and sometimes I wonder if Blizzard’s plan isn’t in total opposition with ours.

For exemple I did placements and ended up G3 or something, then climbed up to D5 with a decent WR. I did play a lot S3 to S6 then stopped to come back around S28 where I ended up plat something.
Here i’m not questionning the rank I got placed, it’s just a comparison to what follows.

I made another account to train only dps and other heroes I wanted to get good at to a level around mine during S4.
I did placement on it, silver something and ended up plat.
Now here’s the thing, I know my MMR on OW was bad on it, like plat something but nowhere near diamond so I knew climbing would be a bit harder. For some reason I’m doing surprisingly better than on my main yet it doesn’t move really much, I even just got demoted to G1 after 7-4.

I understand that full transparency about MMR and how ranking system works would be counterproductive since it would allow people to play with it in their favor.

But the matchmaking is clearly worse than OW1, I even saw a silver (real silver not a smurf or new account or ex 3400 who placed badly) to a mid-diamond game. (It happened only once but it shouldn’t)

Now I’m getting the feeling that Blizzard took the SR to hide how messy that new ranking system is and therefore doesn’t feel the need for transparency.

I’m not complaining about my rank, but something feels off and I’m pondering the quesiton:
What changed ?

What are your thoughtd about it ?

Overwatch should have a system like on Valorant which clearly rewards personal performances.

For instance, if you win a match but didn’t do much, you don’t earn much Competitive points. Same goes for losses, if you lose a match but contributed a lot (overall good performance, even better than some of the enemies’), you then lose less Competitive points.

It’s simple and completely transparent but I feel like Overwatch’s Competitive system isn’t thorough enough to be able to gather such data anyways… Also, since 5v5 on Overwatch makes it too team reliant (especially because of the counter-picking system), I understand that it’s somehow hard to tell whose at fault (except for the solo tank issue) for a loss.

Sometimes supports die because no one peels for them while enemies hard focus them and sometimes DPS players can’t get any kills because no one supports their initiative.

They should have kept the OW1 system as current system seems to hide the fact that they mix people up from very different ranks (in the same match) which is pretty bad.

I haven’t run into a more convoluted system in about 20~ years of playing on various competitive ladders.

Just about every other game tells players how much rating they lost and their new position on the ladder post match. In many cases it’ll even tell players what their exact rank is in within the tier compared to their peers.

Aint nobody want to play between 7-26 matches (worst case of winning 6, losing 20) to find out if they gained or lost a tier. On top of that, players often have no idea why they received the result.

It’s bonkers.

New serie, skipped P5 to end up P4, this doesn’t make any sense.

Watching streamers and even them are not sure they’re gonna promote or demote after a positive “successful” 7wins serie.

In the end the MMR seems to really adapt, but the path it takes you to is very very misleading
